Foreword
The 24 Hours of Le Mans is regarded as one of the greatest challenges there is motorsport in 2011 under new circumstances: the Automobile Club de lOuest (ACO) follows the general trend to smaller but, at the same time, highly efficient and powerful engines. Lightweight technology and aerodynamic efficiency, two of Audis core skills, play an ever greater role than ever before. Audi has developed a new LMP1 sports car for the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the first complete season of the new Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC). The Audi R18 TDI is the brands first closed Le Mans sports car since the R8C in 1999. It is equipped with innumerable innovations and in future the powertrain of Audi Le Mans sports cars will be designed for electrification.

Le Mans follows production line trend

Audi tackles the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) in the 2011 season with a newly developed LMP1 sports car. After Audi achieved each of the previous nine Le Mans victories with an open sports car, the brand with the four rings relies on a closed car again for the first time since 1999. The main reasons for this are the new Automobile Club de lOuest (ACO) regulations which follow the general trend in automobile manufacture and stipulate smaller engines. As a result of the reduction in power, the aerodynamic efficiency gains importance. To this end a closed car offers clear advantages. Additionally the Audi R18 TDI is uncompromisingly trimmed for ultra lightweight. Audi prepares itself for the future electrification of its powertrain. This is also why Audi Sport selected a particularly compact V6 TDI engine the power

plant leaves Audi Sport engineers all avenues open for the next few years. The engine concept is just as revolutionary as the carbonfiber monocoques single-piece construction. Audi aims to continue its success story at Le Mans and further demonstrate Vorsprung durch Technik with many other details like full LED headlights for example. Audi Sport Team Joest fields three Audi R18 TDIs at the 24Hours of Le Mans with the same driver teams as in the one-two-three finish last year. Audi contests each ILMC race with two cars driven by Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish and Timo Bernhard/Marcel Fssler. The ACO has created a new worldwide racing series for sport prototypes in the form of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, which revives the tradition of the legendary Manufacturers World Championship. Combined with customer relevant forward-looking technologies, sport prototypes represent the perfect field of activity for Audi, says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.

Audi relies on ultra lightweight

Lightweight design expertise expressed visually: this is the principle under which Audi enters the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans this year. The three Audi R18 TDI cars, which join the grid for the French endurance classic on June 11/12 and which make their first public appearance over the Easter weekend at the Le Mans test day, perfectly embody also visually Audis core expertise in lightweight technology. The livery is dominated by puristic carbon fiber. The car of last years Le Mans winners carrying start number 1 even runs almost entirely in the characteristic black of the extremely light and, at the same time, high-strength material, which also plays an increasingly important role in the development of new production cars. Carbon fiber is ideally suited for lightweight design and construction, explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang

Ullrich. We have deliberately made this material and the ultralightweight technology visual for Le Mans. Lightweight design has occupied us for many years in motorsport. Everything that we have learnt over the years and especially about lightweight design and construction during development of the R18 TDI will also be available for our customers in the future either in the form of greater performance or in the shape of low fuel consumption and lower emissions. The R18 TDI is a particularly authentic ambassador for the companys lightweight technology which will be bundled

between the first and second versions an excellent example for Audis ultra lightweight technology expertise

by the term ultra in the future. Lightweight design is a very important factor at Le Mans because a light car is also always a more efficient car, says Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. For this reason every R18 TDI component was optimized logically with regard to weight the same applies for the chassis and bodywork the gearbox and the engine. The carbon monocoque produced in a single-piece, for which a highly complex manufacturing process was developed and which is an impressive example of the companys lightweight design expertise, is not only revolutionary for a Le Mans sports car. The same applies for the bodywork which was lightened by 40 kilograms between the first and second version. The engines weight was trimmed by about 25 percent. The Audi R18 TDI is equipped with

many innovative solutions, says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich proudly. It was built for regulations specifically targeting future technologies and with the background of being able to introduce these technologies into road going cars in the future. This is what makes sport prototypes so interesting for Audi. That we will now see the first impact of Audi ultra lightweight technology at Le Mans demonstrates just how motorsport and production line development go hand in hand at Audi. Im convinced that ultra will be mentioned in the same breath with terms like quattro or TDI in a few years.

Full LED headlights also help to save weight in both the new production Audi A6 and also the Audi R18 TDI

More than 30 years experience

Audi Sport was established more than three decades ago and is today still affiliated with Audis Technical Development (TE) department. Be it rallying, touring cars of every type or sports car: Audi Sport has celebrated important victories and won numerous championship titles in every discipline in which it has competed. Audi has tackled 18 different motorsport projects between 1980 and today. Currently around 200 employees at the Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm sites are responsible for the development and testing of the race cars. The Doctor of Mechanical Engineering Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich is Head of Audi Sport is since 1993. Program with two priorities While quattro GmbH develops Audis customer sport cars since the beginning of 2011, Audi Sport concentrates on the race cars destined for factory programs, which are currently in touring car and prototype racing. In 2011 this is no less than four different cars. The Audi R15 TDI competed in its final evolution step at Sebring in March. Parallel to this Audi Sport develops the R18 TDI for all remaining Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) events including the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans. The A4 DTM enjoys its final season in the DTM. Furthermore, in 2011 the next touring car from Audi Sport, referred to internally as R17, is developed and tested and should fight for the DTM title in 2012.

Alongside sport prototypes Audi Sport is involved in the DTM. A successor to the latest Audi A4 DTM is being designed for 2012

Ready today for tomorrows technology

The Audi R18 TDI is ready today for tomorrows technology. In the future an electrified powertrain and other different concepts for energy recuperation are conceivable. We are deeply occupied with such systems, says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. If, in our opinion, this technology is the most efficient we will use it at Le Mans. Although diesel engines were repeatedly restricted by the regulations since their victorious introduction in 2006, Audi relies on TDI power once again for the new R18 TDI. Audi invented the TDI engine and is convinced that this technology remains one of the most efficient and modern forms to power a car also at Le Mans where engines

With and without roof: the Audi R18 TDI and its predecessor the R15 TDI

Windscreen and gull wing doors were nowhere to be seen on the preceding model

with high specific power, low fuel consumption and low emissions are order of the day. Since the regulations devised by the Automobile Club de lOuest (ACO) dictate significantly smaller engines than before from 2011, Audi choose a particularly compact 3.7liter V6 TDI engine, which is significantly lighter than the V10 TDI power plant previously fitted to the older R15 TDI, and which leaves all options open for the technicians with regard to electrification and energy recuperation. However, Audi did not only surprise with its extremely compact engine. The concept is unusual for an LMP1 sports car. To lower the center of gravity as much as possible and to improve airflow through the car, the exhaust manifolds migrated from the left and right side of the engine to sit between the two cylinder banks. Hot side inside, is the name given to this concept by specialists, which was implemented in similar form in Formula 1 in the 1980s. The

V6 TDI engine powering the Audi R18 has a cylinder angle of 120 degrees and thus a particularly low center of gravity, but is technically several generations further along the line and is also a technology-demonstrator for future production engines. In contrast to previous Audi Le Mans sports cars the R18 TDI is only fitted with a single turbocharger that also sits above the engine and draws its air directly through the air scoop mounted on the roof. This concept was only made

Unusual concept: turbo-charger and exhaust manifold are situated above the engine between the two cylinder banks

12 13
Audi R18 TDI

The ultra compact V6 TDI engine in the Audi R18 TDI produces over

540 PS this is more than 90 PS per cylinder

possible through the variable turbine geometry (VTG) already used successfully in the R15 TDI. Otherwise the response characteristics of such a large turbocharger would just be too bad, knows Ulrich Baretzky, Head of Engine Development at Audi Sport. The concept was continued logically through a single pipe exhaust that exits at the rear of the R18 TDI below the new fin which is stipulated by the regulations. This also stands for Audi ultra, says Baretzky, since we save components and weight for example for a second diesel particle filter.

Audi Sport has worked since July 2009 on the innovative engine concept for which numerous new routes had to be explored. To control the enormous ignition pressures and loads now only distributed between six cylinders, a unique method of cooling the cylinder heads was developed for the aluminum power unit, a concept that could also be interesting for production. Owing to the compact engine and uncluttered flanks the airflow from the coolers can now exit practically unobstructed through the rear end. We could also increase the aerodynamic efficiency of the car as a result, says Dr.Martin Mhlmeier, Head of Technology at Audi Sport. This even more important than ever before at Le Mans due to the reduction in engine power for the Audi R18 TDI more than 397 kW (540 PS). For the first time since 1999 and the R8C Audi Sport choose a closed LMP1, which has significant advantages

The Audi R18 TDI door opening was designed so that the driver change runs as smoothly as possible

when the aerodynamics have to be conceived with less drag in mind. This is still the case at Le Mans due to the circuits characteristics with its long straights, says Mhlmeier. In addition to the refined aerodynamics which intelligently integrated the new fin between the engine and cockpit, as dictated by the new regulations, ultra lightweight was also high on the priority list for Audi Sport. With the R18 TDI every component was optimized logically with regard to weight, says Mhlmeier. The same applied to the chassis and the bodywork, the suspension or the gearbox where carbon-fiber components are used for the first time. We scoured the car for every superfluous gram. The carbon monocoque produced in a single-piece, for which a highly complex manufacturing process was developed, is not only revolutionary for Le Mans sports cars. The bodywork is the lightest with which has ever competed

Highly-efficient solution: the fin stipulated by the regulations is fully integrated into the R18 TDI overall vehicle concept

at Le Mans. Such a consequent lightweight design is a great technical challenge, says Christopher Reinke, Technical Project Leader at Audi Sport. However, up to now the decision has proven to be correct. Initially we had to rethink handling of the parts which are now considerably more sensitive. The new six-speed gearbox, incorporating a high amount of carbon-fiber composite material, and the complete LED headlights also help to save weight. The R15 TDI was still equipped with a combination of Xenon headlights and LEDs. In contrast, the R18 TDI has 16 high-power LEDs

14 15
Audi R18 TDI

which ensure that the circuit is evenly and extremely well illuminated at night. Furthermore, it was possible to omit the electric cooling which was still necessary on the R15 TDI and thus save even more weight. Because the gearshift is no longer activated pneumatically but rather electrically, the R18 TDI no longer requires a pneumatic system. Optimized ducting of the airflow through the cockpit should make the use of air-conditioning redundant which costs weight and engine power. Hardly single component originates from the R18 TDI cars predecessor. The R18 TDI has many innovative solutions, judges Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang

Ullrich. Be it downsizing, the LED headlight technology or the ultra-lightweight design and construction well learn a huge amount for the production line. It is exactly this that we aim to do at Le Mans.

Flat line: the Audi R18 TDI is just a little more than a meter high

Perfect ergonomics for the driver

In contrast to its predecessors, the R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI, the new Audi R18 TDI is right-hand drive. The reason: In an optimized overall concept a right-hand drive race car facilitates a more ergonomic, less distorted seating position for the driver. Additionally, the majority of corners around the Le Mans circuit are right-hand corners. Also, it is easier to make the driver change on the right-hand side. While it was necessary to protect the switches, buttons and electronics found in the previous models from the rain, the Audi Sport engineers could arrange everything ergonomically in the closed cockpit to best suit the drivers. The most important functions are located on the newly developed steering wheel.

The starter button is located on the Audi R18 TDI steering wheel for the first time. There are four paddles behind the steering wheel: the two upper ones are for the main beam and the pit lane speed limiter, the two below to shift gear The central display has several pages and shows the most important information The buttons for fine adjustment of the brake balance and the traction control (ASR) are used frequently

Never change a winning team

Audi celebrated a perfect result at Le Mans in 2010: after 24 hours all three driver teams mounted the podium. In the meantime the drivers count 16 Le Mans victories between themselves. For this reason Head of Audi Motorsport Dr.Wolfgang Ullrich once again relies on this strong and balanced team in the same formation. In addition Marco Bonanomi was signed as new test and reserve driver. The Italian carried out valuable work during the development stage of the R18 TDI already. Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Mike Rockenfeller claimed start number 1 after winning last year. At that time the German-French trio had an average age of 29 and, as a result, is the youngest combination to take an Audi win at Le Mans to date. Yet another record goes to the young aces: they covered 5,410.713 kilometers and in doing so broke the previous distance record of 5,335.313 kilometers set in 1971. Each of the three Audi drivers celebrated their first personal Le Mans victory in the process. With start number 2 Marcel Fssler, Andr Lotterer and Benot Trluyer aim to fight for victory. They competed in this formation for the first time last year for Audi at LeMans and even sporadically led the race. At the flag the trio was only beaten by a lap. The Audi R18 TDI of Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish carries start number 3. The three racing legends hold records: they share no less than 13 Le Mans victories. In 2008 they took overall victory together for Audi. Most successful driver is Tom Kristensen. The Dane sits atop the Le Mans all-time winners list with eight victories. The Audi team

The most successful Le Mans team ever

Audi relies on the most successful team at Le Mans for its sport prototype program. Joest Racing was the team in from the start when Audi entered the sports car scene in 1999. Reinhold Joest contested the 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier himself as driver. He has won the classic race eleven times with his team since 1984. As a result, the team from Wald-Michelbach in the Odenwald region is a lonely record holder. The team celebrated seven victories together with Audi alone. However, the team is not only first class at the Sarthe. Joest won the American Le Mans Series four times with the R8. On top of this comes the champions trophy from the 2008 Le Mans Series. Joest is also the benchmark for the 12 hours Sebring: the team is credited with seven wins, each of them with Audi. Ralf Jttner acts as Technical Director of the organization. Alongside Reinhold Joest he is also one of the two Managing Directors of Joest Racing GmbH.

Intercontinental Le Mans Cup

Audi R18 TDI in worldwide hunt for titles

A global series for sport prototypes the fans waited long and patiently for this. Audi now continues a first class tradition with the R18 TDI in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC): the four rings were repeatedly involved in motorsport worldwide for more than 30 years. With the greatest success: four titles in the Rally World Championship during the 1980s and victory in the Touring Car World Cup in the 1990s demonstrated Vorsprung durch Technik worldwide. Audi now aims to continue this streak with the sport prototype. Last year the Le Mans organizer ACO established a high-caliber international cup with the ILMC. A complete season comprising of seven races grows this year from the previous three races on three continents. The series gains its unique value through the quality of the races: the 24Hours of Le Mans (F), 12 hours of Sebring (USA) and the Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta (USA) are three real gems on the calendar. On top of this come the classics at Silverstone(GB), Spa-Francorchamps (B) and the finale at Zhuhai (CN). A traditional race in Italian also enjoys a renaissance: for the first time since 1984 Imola (I) will be the venue of an international sports car race. As a result the rising series is present in America, Europe and Asia.

The Audi R18 TDI goes hunting points worldwide in the ILMC

Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen contests the complete ILMC season for Audi

We enter a new technological period in motorsport with the Audi R18 TDI, says Head of Audi Sport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. Efficiency, energy regeneration, electrification of the drivetrain and many other pioneering concepts conquer motorsport. It goes with saying that we want to demonstrate Vorsprung durch Technik once again in motorsport. For this purpose we need a worldwide platform. The ACO has created this in 2010. This is an ideal approach. The legendary Manufacturers World Championship from the 1970s enjoys a revival in the form of the new series. There is no drivers classification in the ILMC. Points are awarded to manufacturers and teams and in every class: the Audi R18 TDI competes in the LMP1 category. The LMP2, LM GTE Pro and LM GTE Am classes also exist. Points for the first twelve finishing positions are awarded as follows: 15-13-11-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. An extra point is given for pole position. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is specially weighted. The best twelve teams are awarded points as follows: 30-26-2218-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2 as well as an additional point for the fastest practice lap. In the manufacturers classification the results of a brands two best placed cars count. After finishing second last year Audi aims to win the title this year.

Dindo Capello Even though Sebring is a permanent race track it does however have many different elements. It used to be an airfield, as can be seen from the unusual concrete surface. Turn 17 is also unique. It is incredibly long. Perhaps only the Parabolica at Monza is similar, but which feels totally different. Turn 1 is also challenging: we turn-in from the wide front concrete apron onto a bumpy surface which in turn leads onto a narrow tarmac section so, several challenges at the same time. Approaching turn 7 the hairpin is a good place to overtake. In Turn 17 you should only really try to overtake if both cars turn-in alongside each other. Sebring is a great, traditional track. However it is very difficult in a sports car when you have to share it with 50other cars. All winners since 2000

Andr Lotterer Spa is like a home track for me since I grew up just an hour away. It is one of the worlds most wonderful tracks. Its possible to overtake into the first corner La Source. This if followed by the famous Eau Rouge. Well have to wait and see if we can take it flat out. We had to lift slightly in the R15 TDI. Going into Le Combes is also a good place to overtake. The Bruxelles corner is difficult because its off camber and you are always a little too quick. The double left Pouhon is long and open. You have to carry a lot of speed through it. You then quite literally fly towards the highspeed chicane Fagnes. The Blanchimont section must be flat if you position the car well. The slowest corner of all comes at the end of the lap the new chicane before the startfinish. All winners since 2003

Romain Dumas Le Mans is quite a unique track with its combination of public roads and permanent race track. The long straights characterize the track. They require a car capable of extremely high speeds. In addition there are very fast corners like Indianapolis where downforce is needed. So, the set-up is always a compromise. In my opinion to be good around this track you need a car that is easy to drive and very well balanced. With a length of more than 13kilometers there are many overtaking possibilities, for example before the two chicanes along the Hunaudires straights. You can pull away from the competition heading towards the Porsche Curves. For me they are the key as it is the most difficult part of the whole track.

The history of Audi at Le Mans

9 victories in 12 years
Audi has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans no less than nine times since 1999. An impressive winning ratio of 75percent is the result from twelve starts. The ratio is even more remarkable when 2003 is included: at that time the groups brand Bentley won. The powertrain technology in the green Coup from England was developed with the aid of Audi Sport. Thus the engineers from Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm have been involved in ten victories. The Le Mans project began when there was nothing more to prove for Audis most successful invention: permanent four-wheel drive quattro conquered all comers in rallying and on track. When it was banned by the FIA at the end of 1997, Audi looked for a new challenged. Le Mans was the choice. A crucial advantage of the endurance race: at more than 5,000 kilometers a distance is covered within 24hours for which Formula 1 requires an entire season. On its debut Audi returned with trophies. In 1999 one of the two Audi R8R prototypes entered finished third in the extremely competitive field. A year later Audi celebrated its first overall victory. The Audi R8 recorded a one-two-three podium lockout on its debut. Audi set the next milestone in 2001. A TFSI engine with gasoline direct injection powered the victorious R8. Its excellent drivability paid dividends in all conditions and especially in the wet. The power units economical use of fuel created a clear advantage in the fight with its rivals. The R8 covered more laps with a single tank fill than all the other cars. The eternally youthful sports prototype prevailed again at the Sarthe in 2002, 2004 and 2005. This was achieved despite the regulations limiting the cars performance increasingly. Its engine power sank year to year by a total of around 74 kW (100 PS) and its rear wing became

1999
correspondingly smaller. Tom Kristensen was on board of the R8 for all five wins. With now eight overall victories to his credit the Dane is a lonely record holder for the race that exists since 1923. Audi produced a unique performance in 2006. For the first time ever an automobile manufacturer won the endurance race using diesel technology. The Audi R10 TDI was not only in front on its debut: the prototype scored a diesel hat-trick with two further victories up to 2008. The history books were rewritten again as the R15 TDI triumphed in 2010. Audi exceeded the 39 year-old distance record by 75.4 kilometers.

Marcel Fssler Imola is not only very fast, but also very fluid to drive. You drive anticlockwise. The chicane after the Acque Minerali corner is remarkably tight. The high kerbs here can easily damage the aero parts. The track is very hard on the brakes, as there is not really a long straight to cool them down. Sportscar grids are often full and because the Imola track is relatively narrow you have to be careful when overtaking. In my experience the Acque Minerali section is the most difficult part. The car is loaded heavily on the left side and you have to drive very precisely when braking in order to take as much speed as possible without the rear stepping out of line. I really like driving at Imola. Its not only the track which is great it is also situated in lovely surroundings. This gives it a great atmosphere. All winners

Allan McNish When I drove for the first time at Silverstone in 1987 the track was comprised of just five corners. Now there are 15. At that time you were lapping very quickly. Today there is a balance of fast and very slow corners. This complicates the set-up and also the driving, because as a driver you find a rhythm. Like all GP tracks there are large run-off areas. After the first corner Copse comes Becketts. Its a crucial point and is comprised of a sequence of increasingly tighter but very quick corners. There is a good overtaking place on the Hangar Straight. The same can be said for Stowe and the new slow section opened in 2010. Its easy to make driving mistakes here. The track today is just as challenging as it was back then but for very different reasons.

Timo Bernhard You reach an incredible speed on this track. Apart from turn 7 all the corners are very fast. The many changes of direction within a lap also stand out. The Esses in particular are very demanding. Its difficult to find a good set-up for this. When you drive for a long time you really notice what youve accomplished because of the high g forces. On top of this come the many altitude changes. The circuit is often not visible beyond the crests. The red sand lining the track is a peculiarity. Its very dusty when its dry; when its wet the circuit is flooded. The best overtaking places are in turns10 and 11. But be careful, if you overtake a car entering the left corner it is normally perfectly placed to counter into the next right!

Tom Kristensen Zhuhai is a friendly city, and it is much larger than you think. You travel there by ship via Hong Kong. The temperatures in November are perfect with a little humidity. The track is very tight and the circuit layout not exactly fluid. This is due to the slow corners at the end of long straights. Its also very hard on the brakes. You can take the fast corners 2 and 6 flat out. I like corners 10 and 14 the most. The turn 5 chicane is very aggressive and gives good feedback to the cockpit. The pit lane entry is the quickest on the entire calendar. In Zhuhai its about having very high-quality and durable brakes combined with good traction and acceleration. To conclude, Im convinced that the R18 TDI is the best solution
