It appears therefore that the moisture must be reverted that the hidden treasure may be revealed. But this they could not do while they remained in their metallic forms or bodies. (6) Work therefore with it. Therefore the transmutation of imperfect metals is impossible to be done by perfect bodies. Thus it mollifies the body. nor is there any other water which can dissolve the bodies. than when it is in a dry one. which is their wonderful secret or arcanum. which ought to receive the tinctures of sol and luna. without which nothing has to be done in this art. that is into sulphur. In it also is a power of liquefying or melting all things that can be melted or dissolved. it immediately melts them. (8) Thus you see that nature has to be amended by its own like nature. For this reason it is. our sulphur. subtile. as I said before. or medium in the form through which nature passes in the perfecting or completing thereof. that of them we may afterwards in a little time. or tinging water. (12) These bodies thus dissolved by our water are called argent vive. It also converts other bodies into the nature of a fusible salt which the philosophers call "sal alebrot philosophorum". it is our mercury. nor can it be tinged except it be tinged. if we had no other benefit by this our antimonial water. than that it rendered bodies soft. being animated and pregnant. it can make no alteration in the matter to be altered. nor tinge anything except its own body. to make bodies volatile. fusible as wax. in the mines of the earth. (11) And therefore our ultimate. yea. This water also called the tinging or blood−color−making stone. to tinge the said imperfect metals. that it melts or dissolves gold and silver. From whence. a white vapor. and reduced to a stone of great price. but more immediately to the gold than to the silver. and fluid. because sol and luna are the particular means. which agrees perfectly and unites closely with sol and luna from which it can never be separated. and a wonderful soul. our white water. and prepares them for fusion. It is an oil indeed by nature hot. sulphur of sulphur. spiritual. or silver and gold. And this our water immediately dissolves bodies (as sol and luna) and makes them into an incombustible oil. and the permanent fixed white water. for it turns the bodies into the true tincture. for it makes bodies to be merely spirit. it is called the perfect or great elixir. yet not fire. And so it makes of bodies a most precious and desirable oil. and a tincture. better and more noble than any other salt. and the ferment. until its internal or hidden spirit is drawn forth out of its bowels by this. and not sulphur only. hot and full of fire. because that which is dry doth not enter into. but also quicksilver drawn from sol and luna by our water. it converts them into a permanent or fixed water. subtile. by nature hot and moist. alter and soften the perfect bodies. because it reduces hard and dry bodies. a thick dry earthy matter does not penetrate nor tinge. which you are to take special notice of. which then may be mixed with other imperfect bodies. For it changes their bodies from being corporeal. according to its own nature. because. sinking through and entering into other bodies. a white spirit. it would be sufficient. and therefore. and that it may be made altogether a spiritual substance. that is.The Secret Book of Artephius And this is called the reincrudation of bodies. Now you must note that this white sulphur is the father and mother of the metals. That is to say it is a matter or substance of sol and luna. and of liquefaction itself. He therefore that knows this salt of sol and luna. tinge. that gold coloreth not. he in truth knows one of the greatest secrets of nature. which is the true tincture. the mineral virtue. which is not without its sulphur. and the only way that leads to perfection. For it joined [joins?] in affinity to the gold and silver. and its generation and perfection. that so they may be mixed other perfect bodies. penetrating. It is also called the medium of conjoining the tinctures of sol and luna with the inferior or imperfect metals. till they lose their hard and dry substance or form. But more than that. which does penetrate. in less than an hour's time do that above ground which nature was a thousand years doing underground. or rather temperate. and the mineral of gold. and increases their native tincture or color. because it cannot enter or penetrate. to wit sol and luna. and our quicksilver. and is the subject of all things that can be melted. and our fire. being in its own nature fixed and not subject to vanish in fire. and mercury of mercury. and the hidden secret of the wise searchers of nature. and afterwards how go commix it. and make perfect the work. (10) It behoves us therefore by this our water to attenuate. which is a work almost miraculous. it brings back bodies to their original of sulphur and mercury. more subtile. also it is the water that whiteneth.

For the moisture is contained under. the white gold made by art. the concord. to wit. which contains the nature of the two. the body compounded of sol and luna by our first water. and that is sol himself. and therefore it is called the corporeal and spiritual compositum. and the union of contraries. for the moist is coagulated with the dry. and let them there abide till they be dissolved. that is. terminated with. even most admirable unity between enemies. the dry with the moist. the good. and be changed into air and spirit. in that which is earthy. incombustible and most fixed. to wit. which close well. for all things springing from the earth. there is a mixture made of contrary natures. From these things which have been spoken. and then it is whitened. you inflame the bath. lest it destroy the work. And because sol and luna have their original from this water their mother. and its eyes beforehand black. that he can never know the necessary course of nature. is the only matter of our magistery. WE must know therefore. by which these natures. in a true marriage. a mother. because that within. that the spirits are not fixed but in the white color. fixed with sol and luna. whereby they are made young again and beautiful. This then is the compleating of the whole work of our second stone (observe it well) that you take the perfect body. which is nothing but water. and that the white quintessence after its rising out of the dead earth. as it were of a balneum. And so by a continual dry fire. upon which the "spiritus albus" or spirit of whiteness is born. ascends in the air to the top of the water in the substance of a white vapor. and then it will be the true and perfect elixir. Then will the argent vive fall down from our air and spirit. that whatsoever is clear. This The Secret Book of Artephius 10 . therefore. and true tincture. and made a true tincture of perfect redness. And know well. the whiteness is changed. Thus we can never find an end if we do always work by reiterating the same thing over and over again. as we have formerly said. which the philosophers call their virgin milk. how like natures rejoiceth with like natures. you will find in the bottom the black feces. by the help of our dissolving water. and that spirit. perfected. Until it comes to the ultimate or highest purity of sublimation. and put it into our water in a glass vesica or body well closed. until it be purified and re−solved into blackness. Thus also is the virtue thereof increased. viz. not with your hands. and then rubify it again. that is upon the waters. increase the fire. and assiduously continue the operation or work upon the fire. which is the subtile being of the body. and towards the end. so that if after the first course of the operation you obtain a hundred fold. according as you please. tinging truly and perfectly. Wherefore with a dry fire. your projection will come to infinity. For by a new corruption and generation. Afterwards. Thus by a thing of small and easy price. and multiplied both in quantity and quality. that the son of the virgin be exalted from the earth. by the degrees of fire. Continue yet still. by which we dissolve and congeal. which is called argent vive sublimed by the air or spirit. and a dry calcination. And by pursuing your work. Dissolve. in new and fresh dissolving water. And consequently by how much more it is heightened in color. and utmost volatility. (44) Now if afterwards you would multiply your tincture. and cast them away. and the natures themselves do embrace one another. and continue this course. the gross and thick remaining in the bottom. you must again resolve that red. lest the air get in or the enclosed humidity get out. (45) Our fire then and azoth are sufficient for you: decoct. removed. reiterate. in the beginning of the work. or the fire. till the decoction and digestion is perfect. and is thereby cleaned from all blackness and impurity. fire. till the whole spiritual substance ascend to the top. be raised up towards heaven. which quintessence is more white than the driven snow. and weight. dissolve. scorched and burnt. white−pure and spiritual. or become red as blood. that it may be white and subtile.
that the matter may be filled with spirit from the air. and be assured the art is true. you separate the earth from the water. and brings it to perfection by a circular operation. and by me she herself is begotten. it separates always the more pure. which is not ascended and exalted to the higher part. and attenuated. And this is the sublimation and coagulation. till it ascends with the white soul. For naturally all things take life from the inbreathing of the air. like as the rennet of a lamb or calf turns milk into cheese. or climbs like argent vive. From these things it is necessary. and a wonderful connection of their cold with hot. and by such a sublimation. or be left at the bottom. and then one contains the other. or dissolved. but a change of the natures. and that in the lower place. except the body therefore be by the fire and water broken. than in the separation of these parts. Then you shall see the water coagulate itself with the body. and the spirit is incorporated with the body. but of its own accord. and draw to itself the white mercurial soul. by the sublimation of the water. which is called the residing earth. and cherishing the son whom she has begotten till he come to a ripe or perfect age. For the soul is aided by her associate and fellow. And in such a sublimation the more subtile. it is born in the air or spirit. (52) This compositum then is not a mechanical thing. and made one with it. and suffers not to be separated from it. because nature dissolves and joins itself. and without violence. of a subtile nature. and becomes life with life. being only spiritual and incorruptible. In the same manner the spirit penetrates the body. that is from the fire. (50) The vulture flying through the air. and the body may assume. let the white property with the more subtile part of the body. And the more subtile part in the superior place will take upon it the nature of a spirit. nothing is or can be done. which is impossible to be done otherwise. but nature herself does it. the hot is mixed with The Secret Book of Artephius 11 . till no more remains of the purity of the soul. pure. And by such an operation it is that the body is made spirit. and the body draws to itself his moisture. and the toad creeping upon the ground. to make a separation by decoction. and essential parts are conjoined. and perfected by it. as to the earth. And for this reason it must be continually decocted. with which you sublime. and live. the nature of an earthy body. which it naturally holds. for that with the fiery nature or property lifts up the subtile parts. are the emblems of our magistery. being separated from the feces. now after I have taken from her. whereby they will both be reduced to an equality of properties. freely. to wit. like as the loadstone draws iron. and so also our magistery receives in the vapor or spirit. that this composition is not a work of hands. making it fixed for ever. because it is like to it in the nearness of the first pure and simple nature. but as I said. that it may be brought to a subtile property. that the pure may ascend. Wherefore your fire ought to be gentle and a continual vapor. and ascend to the upper part. and the moist with the dry. in the perplexity of a troubled sea. and raising up. a changing of natures. and by sublimation diluted or brought into a spirit. her flying she after an admirable manner becomes kind and nourishing. which is done in a short time. until it ascends as a spirit. Therefore it behoves you to sublime both. the whole. leaving the grosser at the bottom. But when it ascends on high. Wherefore. or fixes the body and spirit. and the thin from the thick. When therefore gently and with much care. The Secret Book of Artephius separation of the pure from the impure is not done with hands. both body and spirit are made white. separated from the body. or a work of the hands. as it were into heaven. and is perfectly comixed with it in its smallest atoms. saith the body. My mother. its white soul. because of the nearness and likeness of its nature. sublimes and lifts itself up. made to ascend leaving the feces behind. and the impure will descend beneath. then that which is pure will separate itself from the earth. and the earthy part descends to the bottom. conjunction. and the impure may descend. (48) Our brass or latten then. because the body coagulates the moisture into dryness. or rather as the white soul. (49) This philosophical and natural sublimation therefore is necessary which makes peace between. and grows white. is to be made to ascend by the degrees of fire. and is changed into spirit. and a simple pure whiteness. (47) It appears then. (51) Hear now this secret: keep the body in our mercurial water. be by this operation. which retaineth every volatile thing. has begotten me.
And this is the solution of the body. and then by continual decoction. Which when you see. till he is purged by the fire and tinged. latten or brass. by a continual digestion in our water. let our body remain in the water till it is dissolved into a subtile powder in the bottom of the vessel and the water. it may assume a citron color. or direct the work. So that the natures being mixed together. not much unlike to the smell of a vault where dead bodies are buried. so also does the spirit convert the body into a tinging and white spirit. to quicken the species. be glory for ages and ages. and revives the dead. He therefore that maketh the red earth black. and the bird of Hermes. to impregnate. and make one permanent or fixed substance. which ought to be cleansed from its blackness. And then the one will be mixed with the other. to cleanse the culture from its blackness and darkness. I say. in them is the royal diadem. which is called the gander. And in this putrefaction and resolution of the body. viz. that with heat and dryness. to make white. and the body so dissolved. viz. and a most beautiful redness. which is called the black ashes. or changes it into a body. a discontinuity of parts. to mortify. the spirit is converted into a body and body in a spirit. with a real agreement. and the dry with the moist: By this means is made the mixture and conjunction of body and spirit.
