Winners
There are 9 Muslim Nobel laureates and 5 out of the 9 have been given the Nobel
‘’Peace’’ Prize.

4 of the winners are Egyptians.1 from Pakistan,1 from Bangladesh,1 from Turkey and
1 from Palestine.
 Anwar al-Sadat (Egypt) - The Nobel Peace Prize 1978

For the “Camp David Peace Agreement”. He shared the prize with Menachem Begin.

Abdus Salam (Pakistan) - The Nobel Prize in Physics 1979

"For his contributions to the theory of the unified weak and electromagnetic interaction
between elementary particles, including, inter alia, the prediction of the weak neutral
current". He shared the prize with Sheldon Lee Glashow and Steven Weinberg.

Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt) - The Nobel Prize in Literature 1988

"Who, through works rich in nuance - now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively
ambiguous - has formed an Arabian narrative art that applies to all mankind"
 Yasser Arafat (Palestine) - The Nobel Peace Prize 1994

"For his efforts to create peace in the Middle East”. The prize was shared with Shimon
Peres and Yitzhak Rabin.

Ahmed Zewail (Egypt) - The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1999

"For his studies of the transition states of chemical reactions using femtosecond
spectroscopy"

Shirin Ebadi (Iran) - The Nobel Peace Prize 2003

"For her efforts for democracy and human rights. She has focused especially on the
struggle for the rights of women and children."
 Mohamed ElBaradei (Egypt) - The Nobel Peace Prize 2005

"For his efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to
ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way". He
shared the prize with IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency).

Muhammad Yunus (Bangladesh) - The Nobel Peace Prize 2006

"For his efforts to create economic and social development from below". He shared the
prize with the bank he established, the Grameen Bank.

Orhan Pamuk (Turkey) - The Nobel Prize in Literature 2006

"Who in the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city has discovered new symbols
for the clash and interlacing of cultures".
