LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFERENDUM TO BE HELD ON 14 SEPTEMBER
TODAY, 9 MAY 2013, THE PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCED THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT'S INTENTION TO PROCEED WITH A REFERENDUM TO RECOGNISE LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN THE CONSTITUTION. THE REFERENDUM WILL BE HELD ON THE SAME DAY AS THE FEDERAL ELECTION, ON SEPTEMBER 14 THIS YEAR, AND WILL ASK VOTERS TO CAST A VOTE ON "FINANCIAL" RECOGNITION - TO ENABLE THE COMMONWEALTH TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE DIRECT FUNDING TO LOCAL SERVICES AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES. This is an important decision for communities across our nation, to ensure they continue to receive the services and infrastructure they need. ALGA President Felicity-ann Lewis welcomed the announcement saying "As we have argued for many years, the only way to protect direct federal funding for community services and infrastructure is to have local government recognised in the Australian Constitution." She called on all political parties to support this referendum, so that councils can have financial certainty to deliver the range of services expected and needed by their communities. "As I have said on numerous occasions, local government wants to win this referendum, which is in the interest of every local community", Mayor Lewis said. Mayor Lewis has written to all councils advising them of the announcement and providing them with some information to assist with media inquiries and messages about the benefits of the referendum in their community. The President's letter to councils is available here and speaking points for councils here The President's press release is available here and a message from the President about the referendum is available here. ALGA has also issued a press release calling for bipartisan support here and welcoming the bill to allow the referendum here.
