THE HOW AND WHY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Leadership comes from followers – if others are willing to follow you, you are a leader – but else – you are a follower. Leadership is the ability to influence others for achievement of some goals. It depends on the situation – in some cases, you may be able to succeed – but in other cases you may not be able to succeed. You have to adapt to the situation. You have to understand the situation and try to use appropriate tools for leadership skills. There are many factors which influence leadership: 1. maturity of follower 2. understanding between followers and the leaders 3. level of power and influence of leaders among followers 4. to what extent the task is complex vs./simple task 5. To what extent the performance requires individual guidance / training / motivation etc. Leadership can be developed by infusing the required qualities among a person. It can be developed by infusing the required skills in an individual. Leadership development programs focus on three skills: 1. conceptual skills – the ability to understand human behavior, environment and their implication 2. human skills: to what extent the leader is able to establish good interpersonal skills with others 3. technical skills: the leader should have some technical skills also to be able to motivate subordinates AFTERSCHO☻OL CENTRE FOR SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP – Let us Change the World – www.afterschoool.tk Join PGPSE along with CS after class 12

Email us: afterschoool@in.com These skills can be development by guidance, coaching, mentoring, seminars; conferences etc. the more a person participated, the more will be development of the person.

We have example of Chandragupta, who are make a leader by Chankya - who trained and developed this person. Let us create situations, role plays, games, circumstances, which can build leadership skills. Let us motivate people to develop their leadership skills and we will get rewards out of it. We organised a group discussion on this theme. The ideas are shared by youth. The ideas are as under: P: let us start with the definition of leader – they are able to influence others for achievement of some goals. They create hope in the minds of persons. They have high self confidence. They have vision and are able to articulate it. They have strong conviction about their vision. They have very high level of environmental sensitivity. Their behavior is extraordinary. Their behavior is good behavior. We can generate many things in leaders – there is something called DNA – we are born with that. It is not necessary that everyone has same qualities – but we can develop many things by practice and experience. For example, we can observe other successful leaders and adopt their abilities and qualities. P2: We cannot develop leaders exactly – to some extent it is in built quality – we can work for development of leadership qualities. In schools and colleges, we can give the management of events to the students and thus we can develop their leadership qualities. There are many games, which can develop their leadership qualities. Games which have team work – for example cricket, kabbaddi etc. are good for development of leadership qualities. We can develop leadership qualities in school and college level. It is an inner quality which can be polished H: if we start from childhood – we can develop leadership qualities – leadership skills can be encouraged through programmes, events, - students are able to conduct many programs and develop suitable skills. Leadership skills require hard work. It cannot be developed in a short period. It requires a long period in development of leadership quality. There are people who spend years in building leadership qualities. In my opinion, we should have a long term perspective.

Email us: afterschoool@in.com P: there are two aspects – genetic and environment factors – those related to genetics – are from birth – environment is composed of family atmosphere, environment etc. when a child is born – it is a raw person – we can mould them in any direction – leadership quality develops due to factors from environment and personal factors. H: a leader generally has good communication skills, he is generally hardworking, positive thinking oriented, good motivator etc. these qualities can be developed over a period of time. If a person gets such environment – there is quick results. If we are able to change our education system – we can easily improve leadership qualities. We have seen that in many cities, there are no programmes for leadership skills. If we conduct such programmes, we are able to develop such skills. P2: we cannot develop leadership by classes or by workshops – we need ambitious persons – we need persons who work with people, they must be willing to work with masses – we cannot develop leadership by theoretical process. P: it is not necessary that a leader has some diploma or some educational qualification Leadership can be found in remote areas / villages also. P2: leadership develops out of the situation – if there is no facility for sanitation in a village - a few may take up initiative to solve the problem – soon they are able to become leaders P; true leaders emerge from backward area s – they are able to understand the problems of people on their own – they are able to find innovative solutions to the problems of the people P2: true leader takes up issues which give social upliftment – they are not looking at parochial issues – they take up issues which are related to social welfare H: some people say that leadership qualities are present in childhood also – I believe that this is not correct - we are able to develop leadership qualities only after certain age – if we are hardworking, we are able to develop these skills P: this quality is like a spring – only a person who is from socially underdeveloped area will develop leadership quality H: if there is a problem for which we are trying to find a solution – if we are facing many problems – we are trying to solve this problem. Leaders from backward areas are able to solve problems of other areas. P: true leaders are those who remain attached with people. They are those who are able to keep the perspective of the people

Email us: afterschoool@in.com P: leader must be a good orator / debater – he should be able to express H: leader must be a good listener – if he does not listen to others – he would not be able to take right decision P: we can conclude – leadership qualities can be imparted – but ultimately the leader emerges from the situation – they can lead our society - we can develop leadership quality but not the leaders. A leader is always having a positive attitude and positive thinking. The whole society will be influenced by society – because the leader creates impact on the whole society. P2: the great leader must be able to take risk – he must be transformational leaders. There are many leaders who took great risk to develop common life. P: a leader is a person who is able to understand people. You have to ability to lead the masses P2: a leader must be intellectual and use all the resources and opportunity for better future.
