During my mentorship in the CDC at Victor Valley State Preschool program, I worked hands on with children ages 3-5 developing their cognitive, social-emotional, and physical skill sets. I wrote and implemented many lesson plans where I got to see hands on how children respond to scaffolding. I also experienced the benefits and learned the difference in child-guided/initiated and teacher guided/initiated. I worked hard developing my language and interaction skills with children becoming fluent in asking them open-ended questions and in developing self-regulation skills. I worked in changing the environment centered around a theme; everything from changing the bulletin boards to creating successful invitations to play with the curriculum areas. I also worked on developing relationships with the parents, with the knowledge that those relationships are just as important as the ones with the children themselves. During my mentorship I also worked on learning the behind the scenes work that coincides with the Title 22 Health and Safety Regulations. I learned how to properly clean and sanitize, as well as where the products were stored. I learned how to head count the children and fill out the attendance sheet properly. Keeping a safe environment is very important for any quality early childhood care program.
