The Queen with the Wobbly Bottom
Phillip Gwynne
Illustrations by Bruce Whatley
It’s not so easy to keep a stiff upper lip when one has a wobbly bottom. A sweetly
hilarious tale about learning to love oneself.
There was once a queen, a beautiful and clever queen, who was loved throughout
her land. But when she looked in the mirror, when she wriggled her hips, the queen
was not happy, not happy at all, because her bottom wobbled just like raspberry
jelly. When she offers a reward for a solution to the royal wobble, hopeful candi-
dates turn up in droves with cures of every kind. But none of them work, and the
queen eventually discovers that real beauty comes from within. This sweet fable
with an important message features a fantastic cast of characters. From a kanga-
roo personal trainer to a lumbering bear of a poet, there is a cavalry of animals on
hand that attempt to de-wobbalize that bottom.
Phillip Gwynne is the author of several picture books and young adult novels, in-
cluding Born to Bake in the Aussie Bites series and Ruby Learns to Swim. Bruce
Whatley is the illustrator of such picture books as Diary of a Wombat, The Teddy

Are You Sad, Little Bear?
A Book About Learning to Say Goodbye
Rachel Rivett
Illustrations by Tina Macnaughton
Little Bear’s friends help him understand what it means to say goodbye
“Gently philosophical and full of autumn color . . . lyrical in both text and
illustration.” —Books for Keeps
“Utterly disarming, and handsomely produced.”
—Kevin Crossley-Holland, author, The Seeing Stone
Grandmother Bear has gone for ever, and Little Bear is feeling sad. His mother
wisely suggests that perhaps asking his woodland companions what saying good-
bye means to them will help him understand his loss. Little Bear’s day of exploring
and asking questions brings him comfort and hope. For the swallows, saying good-
bye means flying to warmer lands; for the leaves of the trees it is a chance to be
free, leaving the tree at her most beautiful; for the moon it is to return to be with
the sun; and for the sun it is to rise in another sky; and just because Little Bear
can’t see him doesn’t mean he isn’t there. This charmingly illustrated book will
help young children in times of bereavement, loss, or change, gently exploring the reasons for saying goodbye and giving reas-
surance that goodbye doesn’t mean the end of things.

may solve the problem.

escaping tiger. After this there is no more rumbling, until one day a noise breaks
the silence in class. But this time it isn’t Isobel’s tummy.

Hot Air
Sandrine Dumas Roy
Illustrations by Emmanuelle Houssais
Translated by Sarah Ardizzone
A humorous, quirky look at global warming
from the angle of environmental politics, with ex-
quisite pastiche illustrations and accompanying
teaching and discussion resources on climate
change and global warming
The earth is warming up. The polar bear has turned
green, the dingo’s gone doolally, and the wolf is float-
ing on an island mid-ocean. The animals know some-
thing is very wrong, but what exactly? After much
bleating, the dolphins are dispatched as envoys to find
and investigate the root cause of the problem. Fart-
ing cows, of course. They are responsible for the en-
vironmental meltdown. But with a lot of gas being
spouted in all directions, can the animals find and
agree on a solution to the cow problem in time to
save the earth? By drawing on a long-established tra-
dition of animal satire, this book holds the looking
glass up to human society and asks readers to be bold,
imaginative, and thoroughly out-of-the-box in the
quest for answers to the big questions.
Sandrine Dumas Roy is a journalist reporting on en-
vironmental issues and sustainable development. Em-
manuelle Houssais illustrates books for children and
adults. Sarah Ardizzone has twice won the Marsh
Award for Children’s Literature in Translation. Her
other translations include Little Red Hood and Mr
Leon’s Paris.

Just So Stories
Rudyard Kipling
Illustrations by Robert Ingpen
An unforgettable cast of extraordinary animal char-
acters is brought to life in stunning new illustrations
by award-winning illustrator Robert Ingpen
Once upon a time, O my Best Beloved . . .
So begins this classic collection of gloriously fanciful tales
of how things in the world came to be as they are. This
collection includes the story of how the lazy camel found
himself with a hump and how the insatiable curiosity
of the elephant earned him his long trunk. It reveals how
the whale was given a throat, and why every rhinoceros
has great folds in his skin and a very bad temper. We
also find out about the cunning cat that walked by it-
self, and how clever little Taffy and her Daddy Tegumai
made the first alphabet. Rudyard Kipling first entertained
his own children with these delightful, warm, and hu-
morous stories, which he later wrote down for publi-
cation in 1902. Conjuring up distant lands and exotic
jungles, they are bewitching for both children and adults.
This sumptuous volume offers the complete and
unabridged text, including the often-missing 13th story,
“The Tabu Tal,” which Kipling added for the American
edition in 1903.
Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) is the Nobel Prize–win-
ning author of such classics as Kim, The Jungle
Book, and the Just So Stories. Robert Ingpen has designed,
illustrated, and written more than 100 published works
of fiction and nonfiction, among them The Jungle Book
and the centenary edition of Peter Pan and Wendy. In
1986 he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen
Medal for his contribution to children’s literature.

Just So Stories
Rudyard Kipling
Kipling’s classic collection of origin stories
“They sing in my head even now. . . . What a wonderful storyteller-poet Kipling was.”
—Michael Morpurgo, author, War Horse
Have you ever inquired why the elephant has such an enormously elongated nose? Are you con-
fused by a cat’s contrariness? Have you ruminated on the wrinkles of a rhinoceros, or specu-
lated how the leopard got its spots? Rudyard Kipling wondered about all these things too, and
in this marvelous collection of stories he imagines how the animals became “just so.”
Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) is best known for The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and Kim. He
was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907.

“By turning adversity to advantage with lots of spunk, Anne of Green Gables has en-
chanted four generations of children and their elders since the world’s most widely read
Canadian novel was first published in Boston in 1908.” —New York Times
My dislikes: Being an orphan, having red hair, people twitting about my red hair, being called
“carrots” by Gilbert Blythe. My likes: Living at the Green Gables with Marilla and Matthew
Cuthbert, my bosom-friend Diana, dresses with puff sleeves, renaming Barry’s pond the Lake
of Shining Waters, coming top of the class. My regrets: Dyeing my hair green. Smashing a slate
over Gilbert Blythe’s head. My dream: To tame my temper. To be good (this is an uphill strug-
gle). To grow up to have auburn hair!
L. M. Montgomery (1874–1942) was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels be-
ginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908.

Anne of Avonlea
L. M. Montgomery
The charming sequel to Anne of Green Gables, with extra information on the characters of
Avonlea and the author
You might think I’d have grown out of getting myself into scrapes now that I’m half past six-
teen. But between being vexed by my freckles, taunted by a brazen Jersey cow, and kept on my
toes by the new twins, Dora and Davy, life at Green Gables is just as eventful as ever. I do try
to be a little more grown-up now that I’m a school teacher. The other day I asked the class, “If
you had three candies in one hand and two in the other, how many would you have altogether?”
One of my pupils piped up, “A mouthful.” Could you have kept a straight face?!

Bugville
Home to the Bravest Bugs in the Universe!
Paul Howard
Every city needs superheroes—even a city of bugs. A highly visual tale of home-
grown heroes.
Home to millions of bugs, Bugville was a rotten, crime-ridden city that stank of stale un-
derpants—that was until Superfly and Midge came to clean up the streets. But our heroes
have their work cut out, facing the likes of Nasty Nat (the nastiest gnat in Bugville) and
a giant robotic goo-shooting caterpillar. And all this before heading home for a tasty “lice-
cream.” Can the heroes defeat Electro Slug and his evil plot to wreak revenge on all flies?
You’ll have a good slime finding out.
Paul Howard is the illustrator of The Hen Who Wouldn’t Give Up, The Otter Who Wanted
to Know, and The Penguin Who Wouldn’t Give Up. Bugville is the first book he

CAESAR THE WAR DOG
Stephen Dando-Collins
“Stephen Dando-Collins has certainly done his research. This is a heart-warming adventure story—full
of interesting facts about dogs in war. It is about bravery, courage, friendship, loss and hope; it is about resilience
in the face of overwhelming odds. But most of all it is a story about a remarkable dog—based on the stories
of real EDD dogs that have served or are currently in service within the Australian and U.S. military.” —Magpies

“An action-packed and heart-warming story rivaling Red Dog in its appeal.”
—Family Magazine
At the kennels, Caesar doesn’t look special. But Corporal Ben Fulton sees something differ-
ent—an intelligent dog whose curiosity will make him an excellent sniffer dog in the Australian
Army. On operations in Afghanistan with Ben, Caesar proves his worth, finding hidden ex-
plosives and saving the lives of the soldiers. Then, during a Taliban ambush, Caesar is sepa-
rated from his master. In the aftermath, Ben and his best friend Charlie are seriously wounded
and evacuated to the hospital before being shipped back to Australia. But where is Caesar?
From their home in Australia, Ben and his family search for clues that might reveal whether
their beloved dog is still alive and surviving Afghanistan’s bitter winter cold and capture by
the Taliban. It will be a long road home, and Caesar will face many hardships along the way,
but for this brave and loyal dog, anything is possible. This book is based on the true story of
Australian military dog Sarbi and its experiences in Afghanistan, combined with the factual
experiences of Endal, the devoted British dog who cared for his wheelchair-bound ex-serviceman
master and became the most decorated dog in history.

CHRONICLES OF THE TEMPUS

To Brave the Seas
David McRobbie
The story of a teenager who ends up as a deck boy on navy ships, learning
the ropes, fitting in with the crew, and facing action in World War II
Also available:
Archie walked by and I said to him, “So this is our secret destination?”
“No secret now, young Adam.” He’d been in New York before, so he was like a guide, and me a tourist. “You’ll soon
see the Statue of Liberty. On the port side—tall lady, holding a torch in her hand.”
I looked out to the left, but there was not a lot to see through the haze. Then I saw her, Liberty, and smiled. I’d seen
the statue in American travelogue films at the cinema, and there was a photograph of her in the encyclopaedia at school.
I never imagined setting eyes on the real thing myself, but there she was, better than any picture.
It was a good way to see New York Harbor. Since my work in the mess room was finished, at least until smoko, I could
relax and admire the view. It was a pity about the poor visibility—but still, I was seeing it.
Archie, Diggy and the others were soon busy getting the ship ready to dock, clumping about in their big sea boots and
cold-weather clothing. As Archie climbed the ladder to the fo’c’s’le top, he called back down to me, “That place we’re
coming to is Ellis Island, Adam, where immigrants first land in America.”
“That's as far as some of them get before being sent back,” Diggy added. “For having a disease, or maybe they’re
bad characters.”
“Gee,” I said, “they come all that way and don’t make it?”
“Yeah, it would be horrible,” Diggy said. “Especially if the voyage over had been as rough as ours.” He followed Archie
up top to stand by to moor the ship.
I thought how terrible it would be to escape from a country where life had been hell—where there was war, violence
and cruelty, and to sail past the Statue of Liberty with her welcoming torch held high. You’d think the horror was over,
then file off the rotten, uncomfortable ship only be told you couldn’t stay, you had to go back.

Louis Beside Himself
Anna Fienberg
From the author of the classic Tashi series, a hilarious story about losing your words, find-
ing your courage, and arm-wrestling your way out of big trouble
Louis’s best friends, Singo and Hassan, are into basketball and skateboarding, and his dad is
into arm-wrestling. Dad wants to build Louis up with wrestling moves like the Walls of Jeri-
cho or the Five Star Frog Splash, but Louis is better at flexing words than flexing his mus-
cles. This summer Louis is put to the test, starting with the phenomenon of the broken mirror,
leading to the paralyzing burglar incident (Louis knows he should get him in a wrestling-
hold, but his heart is hammering and his legs feel like wobbly air), and finally the night when
he comes face to face with peril.
Anna Fienberg is the versatile, well-loved author of picture books, first readers, junior fic-
tion, and YA novels. Her books include Borrowed Light, The Hottest Boy Who Ever Lived,
and the highly successful Tashi series.

The Second Forever
Colin Thompson
A return to the enchantment and wonder of the world Thompson first introduced in the
award-winning How to Live Forever
“Not since Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose have libraries been so celebrated.
Book-lovers and library-haunters will be enchanted. We who know the mysterious pow-
ers of the library will not be at all surprised by the goings on in Peter’s museum, behind
its hidden doors.” —Virginia Lowe, winner of the 2004 Aurealis Award for Children’s
Novels Short Fiction on How to Live Forever
“Peter is a young boy who reminds us all what a wonderful thing it is to be curious and
to find courage we don’t realize is within us. . . . Thompson’s writing is smooth and his
storytelling agile. He introduces us to a world rich with characters and landscapes both
grotesque and charming, and he fills this book with friendship and love.”
—Aurealis Awards Judges’ Report 2004 on How to Live Forever
When Peter and his friend Festival destroyed the book called How to Live Forever so it could
no longer work its spell, they didn’t know it would have disastrous consequences. Now, Peter’s
world is in the worst drought ever—and Festival’s world, inside the museum, is drowning. The
only solution is to re-create the book but can they reverse the water flow? And if they re-create the evil book, can they hide it
so it can never be read again?
Colin Thompson has had more than 60 books published. He has received several awards, including an Aurealis Award for the
novel How to Live Forever and the CBC Picture Book of the Year in 2006 for The Short and Incredibly Happy Life of Mr. Riley.

Coping with Chloe
Rosalie Warren
A gripping novel for teens from a debut author who deftly handles difficult issues
“I loved this book. . . . Emotional and moving, but real as well. . . . The subject is
handled with such a light touch; it’s hard to do anything other than ride along with
the story till you get to its very satisfying end.” —Liz Kessler, author, The Tail
of Emily Windsnap
“A superb book. Once I got about 10 pages in, I couldn’t put it down. I hope it receives
the acclaim it deserves.” —Donna Jo Napoli, author, Bound
“I wrote Coping with Chloe because I am fascinated by the mystery of twins, the way the human
brain works and how we come to terms with losing someone very close to us. I was thinking
about these things when the character of Anna appeared and started talking. Anna’s experi-
ences are all very real to her. How you interpret her story is entirely up to you.”
—Rosalie Warren
Anna and Chloe are twins who share everything, from schoolwork and clothes to fending off
the school bully and dealing with their parents’ separation. Even Chloe’s terrible accident has-
n’t split them apart. After all, twins have a special bond, right? But Anna is beginning to re-
alize that being inseparable isn’t always easy, especially when no one else seems to understand that Chloe isn’t really gone. No
one, that is, apart from the dazzling Joe, who inconveniently seems to like both sisters. Told through the eyes and mind of 12-
year-old Anna, this is a powerful novel exploring the mystery of twins and the process of grieving.
Rosalie Warren is a former schoolteacher.

“Bruton proves herself a real rising star with this poignant, funny, and very readable

your skin.” —Bookseller
The first round of auditions was a bit crazy. All these wannabe popstars sitting around try-
ing to look wacky and soulful and tragic to catch the attention of the TV cameras. At least
we had an awesome back story. The story of me, Agnes, Jimmy, and baby Alfie too; the
tears, the tragedy, the broken homes and feuding families, the star-crossed lovers. And only
some of it was made up. If I say so myself, it was genius: a sure-fire golden ticket to stratos-
pheric stardom—or at least that was the plan.

“Uses Christian imagery and simple, elegant prose to flesh out the Gospel’s one-
line story of Simon of Cyrene.” —School Library Journal
“This quiet, gentle story fills a need for Easter-themed stories that go beyond
bunnies and Easter baskets.” —Kirkus Reviews
Both thought-provoking and engaging, this is the story of Simon of Cyrene —“a man
coming in from the country,” as the Gospels refer to him—who was ordered to carry
Jesus’ cross. Over the centuries, his story has been woven into Polish folklore; when
Simon the farmer brings his wares to market, little does he expect how he will be in-
volved in the events of that very special day, nor how his produce—of bread, eggs,
and wine—will become important symbols of Jesus’ passion and resurrection, re-
membered throughout the ages.

The Thriving Family
Six Core Values to Make Your Family Strong
David Coleman
How the use of six core principles can ensure happy, healthy children who grow up to be
happy, healthy adults
Drawing from his vast experience working with families, along with his own experiences as
a parent, clinical psychologist David Coleman has devised a program based upon six core
values—trust, kindness, responsibility, honesty, respect, and thoughtfulness—that form the
basis of a thriving family life. Identifying characteristics of the properly thriving family in-
clude: recognizing and embracing the fact that life is challenging; acknowledging individu-
ality and seeking to develop the unique potentials of each family member in a nurturing
environment; seeking to understand its own history and how this is brought to bear on fam-
ily life, and to find new solutions to old problems; and seeking to create an unshakeable
unit where children will become strong, considerate, and independent adults, regardless of
the challenges that the family faces on its journey. This book draws on the six core princi-
ples to guide parents through each stage of family life. In an age where the concept of fam-
ily is more all-embracing than ever before, this book offers a unifying way forward for all.
David Coleman is a clinical psychologist, a weekly columnist for the Irish Independent, and
the author of Parenting Is Child’s Play.
