” asked me, the reputed Siddha doctor while I was meeting him for a consultation. I just nodded my head and said that I have no answer. He said, “I don’t mean in the literal sense, but how will you eat your food?” he quizzed and continued “most of us donot know how to eat. If you eat slow and munch the food every bit, 21 times, no food will be harmful enough”. Unfortunately human beings aren’t bovine in nature, to chew the cud. In this fast paced life, we forget to teach ourselves and our children the good habit of eating food and thus are victims to either malnutrition or obesity to contend with. Reflecting with the changing lifestyles, we have forgot the food habits of our elders and have adapted to the fast paced food culture, where everything to eat is either available off the shelf-pre-cooked or cooked. Even though the awareness of carcinogenic materials in the form of preservatives or taste add-ons is there, we seldom look into that, finally paving away to what we have earned is to be parted with the medicine men. Everything is into the fast forward mode. My elder brother was asking how the village Pongal would be- he lives in a big city. I had to tell him that the idea behind the food habits of our ancestors were that living and eating together, whereas a nuclear family rarely sits and eats out together in a home. So eating food is a social exercise aiming at a healthy living, even though the material and tangible benefits can be seen in a longer run. Does this ring a bell? Hopefully we are measuring a day by the money earned and the possibility of acquiring a new gadget or property because we think that it is the insurance to our future. Everything is available in capsule form-vitamins, minerals and toxins. We are of the opinion that a few vitamins will do us all good and the exercise that we undertake in the form of walks will insure us for a longer run. When vitality sags there is no use of this self made formula. Proper intake of food when regulated is the key to duress and this will withstand any amount of stress. This may sound exaggeration per se, on the contrary if one starts to eat healthy and on moderation, no stress will be there anywhere on the systems- physical, mental and society. Are we eating healthy, ask yourself when you take the next meal. When you probe, the answer starts as a message that answers all your queries. To sum it up- stay focused on what you eat. Regulate the timings of your food. It is necessary that your body burns up adequate calories and runs on smooth oiled fashion. It may be unnecessary that you will be in the clinic of your doctor more than often. Eat healthy and stay fit. Ramesh.R.Gopal
