Solons want to establish fitness center in every barangay
Lawmakers who won in the recent political exercise have vowed to push the enactment of a measure establishing fitness centers in every barangay in the country. Reps. Emmanuel Pacquiao (Lone District, Sarangani) and Raymond Palatino (Party List, Kabataan), who authored the bill in the 15 th Congress, said the measure seeks to promote the physical education and encourage sports programs, league competitions and amateur sports for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry. “The state of health and mental fitness of every person are controlling factors in the ability to take advantage of education, technical capabilities and business entrepreneurship,” Pacquiao said. Palatino said the establishment of a community fitness center in every barangay would serve as venue for physical fitness, wellness program and sports activities of all the residents of the barangay. “Our Constitution mandates the State to promote physical education and encourage sports programs, league competitions and amateur sports, including training for international competitions to foster self-discipline, teamwork and excellence for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry,” Palatino said. Under the bill, upon the recommendation of the local health board of the municipality or city where the center is located, a full time fitness instructor shall be appointed to manage the center. The fitness instructor shall receive a monthly compensation of not less than P10,000 to be charged to the annual appropriations of the Municipal or City Health Office where the center is situated. The fitness instructor shall also conduct consultation with the residents of the barangay in identifying any physical fitness activity and sports program that shall be implemented by the Center.
