Number & Operations- Fractions

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.2 Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram. CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.2a Represent a fraction 1/b on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into b equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/b and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/b on the number line. CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.2b Represent a fraction a/b on a number line diagram by marking off a lengths 1/b from 0. Recognize that the resulting interval has size a/b and that its endpoint locates the number a/b on the number line CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.3 Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size. CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.3a Understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or the same point on a number line

Lesson topic (What is the big Idea): Recognizing the relationship between fractions as being equal.
Main Objective: Student will be able to:

Draw from previous knowledge about fractions. Represent a fraction on a number line 0-1. Be able to understand two fractions as being equivalent.

Name: Daphnie Peterson Supporting Objective:

Grade: 3

Subject: Math

Lesson title: Fractions

At the end of the lesson we will construct a fraction number line from 0-1 representing how fractions breakdown and are equal.

Essential Vocabulary:

Fraction, equivalent, number line, represent

Specific Strategies to be taught/modeled:

Planning for individual differences(mediated scaffolding)

Multisensory teaching Make connections with fractions to

everyday activities.

Use of manipulatives
Use of model-lead-test teaching strategy

Use of I Do, We Do, and You Do

Anticipatory Set (KWL/ What I know)

What about fractions do you know about? Where do you often see fractions? What do you want to learn?

Lesson title: Fractions

Opening: Teacher will ask student(s) if they know what a fraction is. We will then begin to look around the classroom to see where we can find items with fractions. We will then talk about fraction examples. (e.g. Cake mix box, measuring cups, measuring spoons etc.) Say to student: Well today we are going to be talking about fractions and so we can better understand how fractions are equivalent to one another by making a number line from 0-1.

Classroom Management/Grouping Issues: Students will work independently or in small group with teacher. Positive praise Guide students in making the number line out of strips of paper.

Lesson Activities:

Lesson Checks for Understanding and Assessments:

Name: Daphnie Peterson I Do (teacher instruction)

Grade: 3

Subject: Math

Lesson title: Fractions

Pre-assessment: Teacher will have student(s) label blank number lines with appropriate fractions.

This will be informal presentation with structured discovery

We Do (class/group activity)

Activity 1. Experiment with measuring cups, measuring spoons and salt to collect data to see for example how many cups of salt it takes to make a cup etc

Activity 1. Teacher will allow for student to explore with materials. (5-10 minutes).

Name: Daphnie Peterson You Do (student practice)

Grade: 3

Subject: Math

Lesson title: Fractions

Activity 2. (10 minutes) Student(s) will follow instructions given to fold paper to make a fraction number line from 0-1.

Activity 2. Teacher will help make sure that student(s) are following directions in making the number line. Helping only when needed.

Extended Learning/Re-teaching/Closure:

I will review student(s) understanding by: Asking questions: How many eighths are in one half? Etc

How did this lesson go? Where the students appropriate with the materials? Did I keep their attention with the lesson?

Would I teach this again? What would I do different? Would I keep it the same?

Every other paper strip prefolded for some students. Example- 1/3, 1/5, 1/9
