Abstract 5

Air Cooling/Heating in Automobiles using Vortex Tube refrigeration system

ABSTRACT
In automobiles the Air-Conditioning system is run by Convectional refrigeration system. The conventional A.C system having Freon group refrigerants are toxic, flammable, costly and having ozone depletion and global warming potential. The fuel cost is also one of the major factor to operate the system. Vortex Tube refrigeration system is a non-conventional refrigeration system. It is a Freon free refrigeration system where air is the medium using for refrigeration and having lots of advantages over Freon group refrigerants. Vortex Tube is a device that works on a standard compressed air supply. Air enters the vortex tube and literally splits the air flow into two parts - cold air at one end, and hot air at the other - all without any moving parts. An adjustable valve at the "hot" end controls the volume of the air flow, and the temperature exiting at the cold end. A stream of heat is produced in the vortex tube; it can be used for heating in cold weather.

The vortex tube is covered and placed in a car cabin which is to be air-conditioned (cooled/heated). A compressor unit is coupled to car engine shaft the developed blower air supplied into the vortex tube through the system (is to be designed and fabricated). The air flow splits into cold air at one end and hot air at one end. The comfort conditions inside the car cabin by supplying cold air, and the required cold air is controlled by valve at the hot end. A stream of heat is produced in the vortex tube; it can be used for heating in cold weather.

In view of the above it is proposed to fabricate the vortex tube and to carry out the experimental investigation on it to evaluate its performance and to compare it with the conventional refrigeration system.
