3D ROUGHNESS

Anburaj

What is Surface Roughness ? It is a measure of the texture of surface 3D Roughness: In 1990 a set of 14 parameters for 3D surface texture was proposed and there were referred to as Birmingham 14. Later ASME B46.1 has included some 3D parameters in its Standards.

Amplitude Parameters:
1. 2. 3. 4. Average Roughness (Sa) Maximum area peak height (Sp) Minimum area valley depth (Sv) Root mean square roughness (Sq)

1. Average Roughness (Sa)

1 nx Sa = nx, ny i 1

z ( j, i)
j 1

ny

Where z(j,i) is the ordinate of the point at the jth column , and nx ,ny are the number of points along the two directions. 2. Root mean square roughness (Sq)

Sq =

1 nx nx, ny i 1

2 z ( j , i ) j 1

ny

Shape Parameters : 1.Skew

1 1 nx Sku = Sq 4 nx, ny i 1

4 z ( j , i ) j 1

ny

2. Kurtois

1 1 nx Ssk = Sq 4 nx, ny i 1

4 z ( j , i ) j 1
