What could be more perfect in the summer?

I love photography, and the possibilities for snapping unique shots are unlimited. You can grab a camera and take in the annual Tour of Gardens, where the flowers and plant life will take your breath away. There are also our many parks as well as the Central Lakes Trail, with all the beauty of nature at your disposal. You can enjoy many top-notch marching bands at the Vikingland Band Festival as schools and communities from around the state vye for titles. The event will also feature the Stabekk School Band from Oslo, Norway. Watch some high-flying fun at the Vikingland Speedway race track or even its smaller version of racing the Runestone Raceway go-karts. Lots of fun packed into a small space, just waiting for you! Marching into its 29th year

f you love a parade and who doesnt make sure you find your way to Alexandria June 30 for the 29th annual Vikingland Band Festivals Parade Marching Championship. This event features the elite among marching bands from the Midwest and will be highlighted by the Stabekk School Band from Oslo, Norway, as the honor band. Last year, 19 bands with 2,000 members performed along Broadway to the delight of more than 20,000 spectators. Since the Festivals beginning in 1985, 85 different bands from seven states, two Canadian provinces and Norway have been a part of this unique event. STABEKK SCHOOL BAND IS HONOR BAND The Stabekk School Band from Oslo, Norway, will perform as the Honor Band for this years parade and will also perform with the Jefferson High School Band of Alexandria at the Root Beer Float Concert Saturday. SECOND TIME AROUND This is a return trip for the Stabekk band, which first marched in the festival in 2008. ALL AGES PERFORM From age 9 to 19, some of the youngest students from the first trip are returning as senior members.

Here in the land of 10,000 lakes, we know how to celebrate the right way with plenty of fireworks displays and summer fun. The Alexandria area is full of traditional and non-traditional fire-

From Fireworks in America FOLLOWING THE ADOPTION OF the final draft of the Declaration of Independence, it was read to the public in various American cities and patriots erupted in cheers and celebrations. IN 1977, PHILADELPHIANS remembered the 4th of July and bells were rung, guns fired, candles lighted and firecrackers were set off. CONGRESS ESTABLISHED Independence Day as a holiday in 1879, and in 1938, Congress reaffirmed it as a holiday. Today, communities across the nation mark this major midsummer holiday with parades, fireworks, picnics and the playing of the Star Spangled Banner and marches by John Philip Sousa.

There are also boat parades on local lakes, and the Viking Speedway will hold its Minnesota Modified Nationals races, highlighted by a spectacular fireworks display. Its the event for the child in everyone
he Shrine Circus will once again be back in Alexandria on Friday, June 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds and is sure to bring out the child in you.
Last years circus highlighted Daniel Raffo, a fifth generation circus performer, and his group of tigers consisting of Siberian, Sumatra and Bengal tigers. There were also elephant rides for all ages. Be sure to make time for this special event.

or 47 years, the Viking Speedway track has been home to stock car racing at its finest, and now, in its 48th season, the local oval has added a new division with the Pure Stocks, giving race fans six classes to enjoy. Many will tell you that theres nothing like being at the track to witness a race in person, and that the best racing action can be found at a dirt track. Stock car racing got its start in Alexandria in 1953; the current Viking Speedway was founded in 1965.

High flying half mile track offers thrills, spills and speed
Since that initial season, race fans have witnessed some of the top racers in the country compete on the big dirt oval. The Viking Speedway is a half-mile semi-banked clay oval that races five WISSOTA sanctioned classes weekly Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Street Stocks. The regular season runs from late April through Labor Day with regular races held on Saturday nights. Numerous specials are also held on other dates throughout the year, including the Central Minnesota Ice Breaker in April, the Minnesota Modified Nationals in early July and the Viking Fall Classic in October. THE RUNESTONE RACEWAY holds its go-kart action every Friday night at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, beginning at 7 p.m. Pit meeting is at 6:30 p.m. and the National Anthem at 6:45 p.m. WHERE ITS LOCATED The racing oval is found at the west end of the Douglas County Fairgrounds, adjacent to the Viking Speedway. Head north on Highway 29 (Broadway) through Alexandria, passing the Viking Plaza Mall and the Douglas County Hospital. Continue on Broadway to 3rd Avenue, then turn left on County Road 82, heading west. Take a left at the stoplight into the fairgrounds. Big fun on the small oval
f you enjoy your racing on a smaller scale, then the Runestone Raceway is for you. High flying go-kart action is located at the west end of the Douglas County Fairgrounds, when the Runestone Go Kart Association holds racing every Friday night at 7 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. Runestone Go-kart Racing, Inc. saw its racing roots begin at the Campbell Raceway oval in the back yard of Harlan Campbells home on McKay Av-
enue in Alexandria, and in 1978, was incorporated. The entire racing program was then moved to the site it occupies now. The original board members, according to DuWayne Nelson, one of the originators of the program, had to clear a corn field, picking each stalk by hand, to build the new track. The Runestone Raceway began as a dirt track with no lights, racing on Sunday afternoons. It has since evolved into a clay oval, complete with lighting, an announcer and spectator stands. Its not unusual to find the local Girl Scout troops or the racers themselves singing the National Anthem.
A non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Runestone Gokart Racing, Inc. also offers up-close action for spectators with pit passes for just $6. The racing program at the fairgrounds provides 12 different categories for young racers Rookie Flat, Rookie Animal, Sportsman Flat, Sportsman Animal, Junior I Caged Animal, Junior I Cageless Animal, Junior I Cageless Flat, Junior II Caged Animal, Junior II Cageless Animal, Junior II Cageless Flat, Stock Light/Medium/ Heavy and Animal Light/Medium/Heavy. Check out future Viking Speedway racers as they begin their careers at the Runestone Raceway every Friday night at 7 p.m.

WHEN Saturday-Sunday, June 15-16 Fishing starts at 7 a.m. with weigh-ins at 3 p.m. at the downtown Osakis boat access WHERE Lake Osakis DID YOU KNOW? The Osakis Lions Club uses this as one of its major money makers for the year, and also brings in revenue for the area hotels, restaurants and bait shops. Fish are caught and released back into Lake Osakis. Those that dont survive are donated to Galeon Senior Living Center for a fish fry for residents.

or 32 years, the Osakis Lions have been hosting their annual walleye fishing tournament on Lake Osakis. In its 33rd year, the tournament will be held on June 1516 over Fathers Day weekend Its a fun event, said Mike Thesing, Osakis Lions Club member. Last year, we brought in a lot of quality fish. This year, with the late spring, I expect it to even out by tournament time and I think the teams will catch some good fish again this year. The tournament features two-person teams and anyone is welcome to register by midnight June 14. Entry forms can be found at various bait shops in the Osakis and Alexandria areas.
Those who try their luck could even win up to $8,000, depending on how many teams enter this year. Last years tournament had 38 teams and 382 walleyes caught weighing in at 935 total pounds.

elebrating the Summer Solstice on Friday, June 21 just got a little more fun as Just A Jaunt members, a group of five Alexandria area businesses, will hold a special event during the extended weekend Thursday-Sunday, June 20-23. Just A Jaunt is a collaboration between Carlos Creek Winery, Tastefully Simple, Maritime Museum, Panther Distillery and Crooked Willow. You will be able to tour, taste and shop your way through their unique establishments, and each stop is just a jaunt from the other. Visitors of all ages can find something to peak their interest at these stops, whether it be painting, music, food or beverage tastings, or maybe even a special deal or two.
CARLOS CREEK WINERY gallery opening for artist-in-residence Joshua Pehrson, an artist accomplished in crystalline glazes. There will also be a live Raku pottery firing, a bonfire and live music with Jeff James on Saturday and Harpers Chord on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. each day. erhaps one of the most eye-catching landmarks in Alexandria is Big Ole a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway. Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area. The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star Worlds Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York Worlds Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled Minnesota, Birthplace of America. The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue. Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of 1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the Worlds Fair.

Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, almost 45 years later, he still stands strong. KENSINGTON RUNESTONE Its a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster? A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of 6th Avenue in Alexandria. The new license options include a 72-hour fishing license, a three-year license and a reduced price annual license for youth ages 16 and 17, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Based on feedback from our customers we created new options that reflect their interests, said Jenifer Wical, customer enhancement manager for the DNRs Fish and Wildlife Division. Customers now have more choices for convenience and value. Wical said the new $12, 72-hour license is likely to be popular among once-a-year weekend anglers, including those who have never fished and those who have lapsed. It does not require a trout stamp or spearing validation. The $63 three-year fishing license provides a $3 price break and is valid until 2016, a convenience. The $5 license for youth ages 16 and 17 is roughly a quarter of the cost of an annual resident fishing license, which is $22. Until this year, youth ages 16 and 17 paid full price for a fishing license. If you love fishing, then share the passion with friends and family, Wical said. The new license options make it easier to recruit those who havent fished, retain those who do and reactivate those who have dropped out. She said license revenue is used to manage 5,400 fishing lakes and support 150-plus field conservation officers. Moreover, the license itself is a ticket to some of the best fishing in America. Minnesota ranks third in the nation as an inland fishing destination, Wical said. Wherever you are in this state, youre close to great fishing. Also new are individual and combination (married couple) super sports licenses that combine a variety of hunting and fishing opportunities into one license. The DNR is working with the Legislature to readjust the cost of this license as its current price exceeds that sum of its individual components. Wilma (Willie) Kilker of Evansville had to wait quite a while for a bite while fishing on Devils Lake north of Brandon in 2009, but after moving to the other side of the lake, she got a surprise. I was just casting to be casting when I felt a strike, and then another, said Kilker. I thought it [the fish] just got away, but I could still feel the weight. When I reeled in, I told my granddaughter to get her camera ready. She looked over the side of the pontoon and asked if it was a two-headed fish! I am so glad she had a
camera. I doubt that anyone would have believed it. Now 73 years old, Kilker is still at it. Bass fishing is still what I love to do best, she said.

he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County. The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County. BE COURTEOUS All trail users should be respectful of each other, regardless of mode of travel, speed or skill level. RIGHT OF WAY Know the specific rules of your trail, which may be local, county, regional or state-controlled. In general, cyclists should yield to all other users. SIGNAL WHEN PASSING Bells are great to use when farther back, especially when followed by a greeting, Good morning, Ill be passing on your left side as you approach. Yelling On yer left while passing at full speed is not courteous or safe. PASS ON THE LEFT Just like a roadway, always pass trail users on the left side and only when it is safe and clear to do so. USE CAUTION AT CROSSINGS There are many types of trail crossings in Minnesota, and they can be very dangerous when not paying full attention. Watch for signage and yield to cross traffic. If there are multiple lanes or blind spots, use extra caution. BE PREDICTABLE Trails can be great for training, but trails are for everyone. Never sacrifice your own or someone elses safety for convenience. On busy weekends and evenings, fast training may be best left to the road. Signal your intentions and be sensitive to others. USE LIGHTS AT NIGHT Some trails may be closed after dark. If open, a white headlight is required along with a rear red reflector. Red taillights are strongly recommended. Dark trails can require brighter lights to see hazards. DO NOT BLOCK THE TRAIL Group rides are fun, but dont take up more than your half of the trail. This often means riding single file on the trails. CLEAN UP LITTER Dont leave trash on the trail and pick up items (especially glass or other potentially hazardous debris) to make the trail a better place for everyone.

is located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available in the cities of Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville. These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson. The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter; however, studs are not allowed.
