Date: November

Please answer each of the following questions thoughtfully and thoroughly. As always, check your grammar and mechanics and answer all parts of the question. These review questions will help you prepare for your test on Act II. You should save this document as lastnamefirstinitial_crucible_quest2.doc in your Term 2 folder. 1. Now that youve learned more about John and Elizabeth, how do you think they feel about each other? I think that in the situation they are now that they would want to put their heads together to become a whole, to get through this hard time together as a married couple. 2. What does Elizabeth want John to do at the beginning of this act? Why does he hesitate? What does Proctors hesitation to travel to Salem indicate about his inner conflict? Elizabeth wants John to go to Salem in front of the court to tell them that Abby is a fraud. 3. In what ways has Mary Warrens attitude changed? What is the reason for this change? Marry Warrens attitude has changed because she thinks she has authority since the girls know who they are going to accuse of witchcraft, she tries not to show to much but at the same time she wants Elizabeth to know about whats going on in the court, Marry gives Elizabeth a doll as a gift but the gift is really a set up. She changes because she knows something they dont know. 4. Explain the ironic ultimatum the head of the court has given to those who have been arrested. The ones who come to court and confess if they are a witch or not will not be hanged or killed The ones who dont come to court and are accused of being witches will either be hanged or killed. 5. What does Mary Warren bring home to Elizabeth Proctor? How does this gift foreshadow future events? Mary Warren brings home a little doll, the gift is actually a voodoo doll and Abby takes advantage of Elizabeth telling Mary to give it to her as a gift but really a voodoo doll is a doll that witches use to hurt the person they are aiming for, so for the court to believe that Elizabeth is a witch they insert a needle into it and Abby pretends that she is really hurt. 6. Why does Reverend Hale arrive at the Proctors? Do you think he is impacted by what he sees and hears? Why or why not? Reverend Hale arrives at the Proctors house to investigate, see if their family is normal, if they go to pray, seeing if they know the commandments, if they go to church on the everyday basis especially on Sabbath Day. 7. For what specific reasons are Rebecca Nurse, Martha Corey, and Elizabeth Proctor arrested? Explain the reason behind the arrest of each of these women.

Rebecca Nurse gets arrested and accused of murdering Ann Putnams babies Martha Corey gets arrested and accused of putting a curse on Mongrel Walcotts pigs Elizabeth Proctor gets arrested for being the wife of John Proctor and torturing.

8. At one point John Proctor identifies revenge as the true evil that is afflicting Salem village. What evidence is there to support this assertion? Provide at least three examples from Act II to support your answer. He is right when he said that because most of the people that are arrested for witchcraft were because of some type drama that they had with the people in Salem. Ruth Putnam is mad that Rebecca Nurse raised so many children while she lost most of her babies, Walcott is mad because he keeps losing his pig after he buys them from Martha Corey and Abby is mad that she cant have John Proctor because goody Proctor is still with her so she is the reason that they are not together.

9. Explain the demand Proctor makes of Mary Warren at the end of this act and her significant response to his threat. Proctor demands Marry to Charge Abigail of Murder because of the witchcraft accusation 10.What is an allusion? Cite and explain three examples of biblical allusions from Act II. (Be sure to explain the meaning behind the allusion.) An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference. When Abigail goes to the court and everybody splits into two crowds referring to Moses and the red sea. When Hale makes John recite the 10 commandments from the bible 11.At the end of Act II, John Proctor screams, My wife will never die for me! that goodness will not die for me! How does this change the way that you think about John Proctor? What, if anything, can he do to save his wife at this point? This changes my mind about John Proctor because at the beginning of the story it seemed as if he wasnt really interested in his wife like Abigail is the only thing on his mind in my opinion, When they arrested Elizabeth his whole mood changed defending her in every way saying that he will get her out showing his love for her and showing that he cares. I think if he goes to the court and talks on how Abigail told him what they were doing in the forest not only could he help his wife but they others who were accused of witchcraft. 12.Why must you pay attention to stage directions when reading drama? To understand where they are in the room, who is in the room, and the time. 13.What must you keep in mind about the historical context of The Crucible in order to better understand the play? I think I would have to understand that this happened a while ago in Massachusetts and its history so everything would be different from then and now. I would have to keep in mind that the people of Salem thought that these events were real but it was really a bunch of teenage girls telling lies.

14.How are legal principles and evidence gathering procedures different in America today than they were in the time in which the play is set? Explain. Today you are either innocent until proven guilty, and have a right to a lawyer, then in the play if you were accused of something you were accused even if you were innocent or guilty. 15.Look up the definition for the word crucible and write about how you think it relates to this play. Crucible: A place or occasion of severe test or trial I think this relates to the play, because they accusers go through many test than go to a trial to determine what they are going to do with them, I think only in severe occasions they do this.
