Watkins Manor Family Picnic

July 2007

Godly Play A Way to Wonder Together
Two of Winona Health’s Chaplains, Kathy Redig and Bill Flesch, come to Adith Miller Manor and Roger Metz Manor every Monday and lead a program with the residents called Godly Play. It is a wonderful way for the Chaplains, a.k.a. storytellers, to tell the stories of our faith. “Godly Play” is a term coined by Jerome Berryman to describe an approach to an individual’s spiritual information that is based on creating a sacred space in which to present the stories of our faith, wonder about them together, and then allow the residents open-ended opportunities, usually with visual aides, to engage the story on their own terms. The stories are told very simply, with simple props, and without interpretation or moral instruction. After a story is presented, the residents and the storyteller wonder together about aspects of the story that draw their interest. This is play. It is Godly. Our faith stories are very powerful and off plenty to think about even without our elaboration on what they “mean”. Godly Play is a popular program with the residents and very well attended. Residents sit around the table and engage in sharing stories, thoughts and laughter. Godly Play has been an important addition to the activity programming at AMM and RMM.

The Watkins Manor Family Picnic was held on Friday, June 22nd. Families and friends of the residents were invited to a good old-fashioned summertime picnic. Each year residents and their families look forward to this event to come together for food, fun and entertainment.
