Sponsorship Case Study
Advancing to Executive Roles
Overview of Case Study – § § § § § Sally has been a strong team leader with the same team for over six years. Sally is a high achiever and gets results. Her only mentor for the last five years has been her boss. Sally is seeking out other advancement opportunities but feels she is getting passed by. A colleague of Sally came to her office and spoke about an internal advancement opportunity posting within the company and asked why Sally apply for it. Sally, disappointingly said, “I didn’t even know there was this opening.” Sally goes to her manager and says, “maybe it’s time for me to leave the organization and explore other advancement opportunities.” Sally’s boss didn’t know she was looking for advancement, nor did the rest of the organization know about Sally’s performance or interest. Sally is now aligned with a coach and has expanded her network gaining greater visibility and now has a sponsor.

Build Your Strategic Network
We all have a wealth of contacts – people who we respect, who are generally helpful to us or who with whom we’d like to have a deeper relationship…but there just isn’t time! If you are going to build a network of relationships with people who can help you advance in your career, you will need to be strategic about it and focused on it. Here is one way to build your strategic network. Sphere of Relationship Current Job Role Goals or Focus: Who Value Action By When

Sphere of Relationship: This divides your life into 3 areas: your job (current role), your career (longer term perspective) and your life outside of work (family, sports, fitness, church, volunteer work, etc.). § § Goal or Focus: In each sphere, write down the top priorities you are focusing on right now. What is really important to you? What will success look like to you? Who: In each sphere, identify 2-3 people who you already know or would like to know – who would be potentially helpful to you in moving closer to attaining that goal.

Value: This is where you get granular. Ask your self how specifically each person might add value to that part of your life. How specifically might they help you attain your goal or be successful? And don’t forget to think about cultivating and sustaining that relationship as a two-way street. Why might you be important to that person? How might you add value for him or her by establishing or furthering this relationship? Action: Take some thoughtful time on this. Identify a concrete strategy for engaging each person identified. Discuss this with your mentors and gain their perspectives. Ask them to help make a connection for you – but, be realistic. Building a relationship takes time and effort. Set your priorities and start slowly so you don’t get overwhelmed. By when: If you set a timeframe for yourself, you are more likely to take the action. It also helps to share your action plan with someone you trust and who is willing to support you – even if it means just holding you accountable for doing what you say you are going to do!

Sponsee Checklist
When engaging with your sponsor, here are few questions to ensure you are properly prepared to ask for it.

Are you clear on what “success” looks like for you? Do you know your strengths, passions, and purpose in life and do your career goals support your more holistic life goals? Do you have the courage to get out of your comfort zone to grow professionally, learn new things, and reach your fullest potential? Do you seek out feedback regarding your strengths / areas to develop? Have you identified your unique value equation? Are you a strong performer with visibility at the senior levels of leadership? Do you have the right people in your network to help you advance in your career? Are you leveraging your mentors so they will sponsor you? Do you have at least 2-3 strong potential sponsors? Are you willing to get out of your comfort zone in order to ask for sponsorship? Are you open to men being your sponsor and do you embrace the qualities and support they can provide?

Making the Ask – Asking for What You Want
When you are asking for help or sponsorship, clarity is important. If you have reached out to someone and they have said no to your request or indicated that they would help but then didn’t, it’s probably because you were not clear up front about what you were looking for and how they could help you. So, the more specific and direct you are, the easier you make it for the other person to say yes. Here are a few tips to consider when preparing to ask for sponsorship: § Be clear about what you are looking for in the sponsor relationship. Engage in fundamental conversations about your career aspirations and be specific about where you need help. When stating your request, connect it to how it would be good for the business. Communicate why you think this potential sponsor is the right person to help you. Be sure you gain agreement regarding exactly what this person will do for you and don’t assume anything. If the person doesn’t feel he or she is able (or willing) to help you, be okay with it. There are lots of potential sponsors out there!

Are you helping your sponsee connect to specific career opportunities? Do you provide advice/feedback on executive presence, value equation, and other topics that will be helpful to your sponsee? Are you helping your sponsee to make connections outside of your organization? Do you give constructive career advancement advice as a key part of your coaching and sponsorship?

Tips for Sponsors
Here are a few tips for how to be an effective sponsor:
§ Be an advocate for your sponsee. Be his or her champion and go “out on a limb” for him or her. Set your sponsees up for success and not for failure. Provide “stretch” opportunities but don’t put them in a situation where they won’t be effective just because you think it would be a good learning opportunity. Be sure you are providing opportunities for visibility with other senior managers and access to other executives. Help your sponsee make connections outside of your organization so he or she can bring valuable thought leadership back to the firm. Coach your sponsee on the best things to do and what not to do to gain the attention of senior leaders. Give your sponsee honest and constructive feedback. Address the difficult areas such as executive presence and asking for what you want so that she can address your concerns.

Here are a few questions to ensure your organization is properly prepared.

Does your organization create an inclusive culture that encourages and sustains balanced leadership – a diverse blend of leadership thinking and styles? Does your organizations engage men and help them realize their value of their roles as mentors, coaches, or sponsors for women? Does your organization tap on women in the pipeline early on? Does your organization create connections and visibility for potential sponsees? Does your company culture promote risk taking and flexibly? Does your organization raise awareness of gender differences, blind spots between men and women, and ways to manage? Does your company put the right rewards and incentives in place for successful sponsorship?
