SS-1065D Social Divisions and Social Change Assessed Essay Titles 2011-2012

Write an essay of 3,500-4,000 words on ONE of the topics below. To be submitted electronically and in print by 3pm on Tuesday 10th January. The word limit includes the bibliography, charts, appendices and footnotes. Check Student Handbook for guidelines on submission process.
1. Compare and contrast the educational achievements of girls and boys in schools. How does gender interact with other social divisions to produce these outcomes? 2. Poverty should not be a birthright. Being poor should not be a life sentence (Tony Blair 1999). To what extent have social divisions made poverty a birthright for some people and is social mobility possible in contemporary Britain? 3. Examine ways in which class affects life chances in contemporary society. 4. How is gender socially constructed? Discuss how this relates to the production of social inequalities. 5. In your opinion to what degree is housing provision and support characterised by care or social control? Give reasons and evidence for your views.

6. What do we mean by the term communities? To what extent can communities be phenomena of social cohesion or social division?

7. Evaluate explanations for the causes of hate crime. Assess the impact of hate crime on victims and strategies for responding to hate crime.

8. Examine the ways in which ethnicity intersects with class and other social divisions in the creation of social and economic disadvantage for some ethnic groups.
