Dear Senator: On behalf of over 500,000 members and supporters of Citizens United , I urge you to oppose the “Agriculture Reform, Food, and Jobs Act of 2013” (S. 954). As the national debt quickly approaches $17 trillion, the last thing America needs is a $1 trillion dollar bill which will grow the size of government and destroy jobs. The farm program has grown by more than 60% since the last authorization in 2008. The bill is also misnamed, as 80% of the $1 trillion in spending would be directed to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. As a result to Barack Obama’s policies, nearly 48 million Americans now receive food stamps, an increase of 182% since 2000. This program, infamous for waste and abuse, should be turned over to the states. In addition, the different issue of wasteful farm subsidies and crop insurance should be voted upon separately. To get our fiscal house in order, Senators must reject this anti-growth bill. The vote for S. 954 will be among those considered for Citizens United’s 2013 Congressional Ratings. Citizens United was founded in 1988, and is one of the leading conservative advocacy groups in the country with over 500,000 members and supporters. Through its films, op-eds, policy papers, newsletters, and grassroots organizing, Citizens United seeks to reassert the traditional American values of limited government, freedom of enterprise, strong families, and national sovereignty and security.
