People use the trick “Please excuse my dear aunt
Sally” to help them in remembering the order of
operations.

“Please”= parenthesis
“Excuse”=exponents
“My”= multiplication
“Dear”= division
“Aunt”= addition
“Sally”= subtraction

Ex. Without Order of Operations

3x4+ (2x3)/24 =
12+ (6)/16=
18/16=1.125

Ex. With Order of Operations

3x4+ (2x3)/ 24 =
3x4+ 6/16=
12+ 0.375=12.375

As you can see, when I used the order of operations, I

got a different answer than not using the order of
operations.
