IB Exploration- Week 6 Term 2 Attitude; Empathy

empathy |emp|
noun the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Area 1; Read the quote below and reflect on the attitude of Empathy.

I think we should talk more about our empathy- the ability to put ourselves in someone else's shoes; to see the world through the eyes of those who are different from us; the child who's hungry, the steelworker who's been laid-off, the family who lost the entire life they built together when the storm came to town. When you think like this, when you choose to broaden your ambit of concern and empathize with the plight of others, whether they are close friends or distant strangers, it becomes harder not to act; harder not to help. Barack Obama
Use the news or library to find a story (either real or fictional) in which someone has demonstrated the attitude of Empathy- this attitude connects wonderfully to your new unit of inquiry into migration. -Summarise the story -Explain how you think the attitude of empathy has been displayed -Consider the alternative outcome to the story- what would have happened if Empathy had NOT been shown. Area 2; Reflect on your own use of empathy as an attitude- in your everyday life and learning. Discuss with your parent and teacher about how the attitude of Empathy is connected to your current unit of inquiry, your time in school, and your time at home. Use bullet points help you to summarise your thoughts. How is the attitude of Empathy connected to your current unit of Where We Are In Place and Time? How do you demonstrate the attitude of empathy at BBI? How do you demonstrate empathy in your life out of school?
