June 19, 2013 To: Alberta Physicians with Methadone Exemption for Dependence Dear Colleagues: I am writing to inform you of a serious and urgent situation in the Opiate Dependency Program in Edmonton. A change in physician workforce at the clinic will result in a high number of current methadone prescriptions expiring on June 30, 2013. Arrangements are made for medical coverage in the clinic going forward, but the acute situation is that there is no possibility of this being adequate to cover transfer of this many Patients over a short period of time. Many of these Patients are reasonably stable, so would be appropriate to be managed by a physician with Methadone Exemption for Opiate Dependence with support of the ODP and an Initiating Physician who will be available in the clinic from July 1, going forward. If you are able to be of any assistance to some of these patients to help during the next few months of transition, it would be greatly appreciated. This is a time to focus on the needs of these vulnerable individuals, rather than dwell on how we arrived at such a serious situation. If you are able to be of any assistance, please contact the office of Mark Snaterse, Executive Director Addiction and Mental Health, Edmonton Zone at 780-342-7710, fax 780-342-7720. Thank you for considering anything you are able to offer. Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Trew MD, FRCPC Medical Director Addiction and Mental Health Primary and Community Care Alberta Health Services
