Mental Health Services for Adults in Bucharest

Dr. Camelia Petcu, Dr. Maria Ciofu, Dr. Florentina Iordache Wide-spread knowledge of mental health services that can be used by psychiatric patients would meet the increased needs of patients and their families, helping them to achieve a higher level of independence, social integration and quality of life. Study objective: The presentation of institutions offering psychiatric and psychosocial treatment and care for adults with mental health problems in Bucharest in order to increase accessibility to existing resources and identify current gaps. Material and methods: The study used data related to functional and structural organization of available resources in the mental health system in Bucharest for the period 2011-2012 – data provided by the Department for Protection of Persons with Disabilities, General Directorates of Social Assistance and Child Protection and specific institutions. This data was compared with existing descriptions of mental health services in specialized articles. Results: The presentation of institutions which offer psychiatric and psychosocial treatment and care for adults with mental health problems in Bucharest, highlighting currently missing resources. Conclusions: This paper presents the current institutions where adults with mental health problems can seek immediate help. Knowing these institutions is important both for guiding psychiatric patients and for identifying the missing structures. The latter could be the first step towards their creation and development
