What drives unity?
20
In what ways has America become more united in the past 10 years?
(Open End)
Just seems that Americans are
more patriotic and willing to
shield the population against
terrorist, foreign or domestic
More accepting of marriage
other than traditional sense,
more minorities being
considered for high political
positions
I think all of the mass killings
and natural disasters have
brought people on different
sides closer together. They are
more willing to compromise on
issues.
The hardships we have faced
have brought us closer together
in some ways.
More people are speaking out
in favor of gay marriage. More
people are turning out to vote.
Through tragedy the people of
the country stand up to support
one another.
Peoples goals are pretty
much the same and everybody
wants a good life for
themselves and their children
By being more supportive of
our troops and families, trying
to make peace with other
countries and working to get
congressional parties to work
together than be at odds
The Atlantic/Aspen Institute
One Nation
Divisible
Survey
What drives division?
21
In what ways is America becoming more divided than it has been historically?
(Open End)
Everyone only cares for their
own issues and puts them
above the common good
Corporations have a lot to do
with it. Richer are growing
richer and poor are growing
poorer."
Educational system doesnt
teach any patriotism,
immigrants maintaining their
own cultures and not adopting
the American Culture.
Government is going down the
tubes, people don't believe in them
much anymore, they say one thing
and do other things, disappointing
the people, its hard to have
confidence anymore
47% of Americans get money
from the government every
month. That is a huge voting
block that cannot be overcome
by fiscal responsibility.
Because people think Obama
isn't doing very well as
President, so people are losing
their faith in America.
Because of social media, people are
voicing opinions publicly that used to
be kept to themselves or small groups
of people around them. Very heated
discussions can often erupt from these
online interchanges.
Every issue seems to have around 50%
for and around 50% against. There
doesn't seem to be majority support for
any issue. And fixing things has become
more problematic - you fix one thing and
another issue is adversely affected.

95% believe being united as a country is
something to strive for
41
Why do you say that? (Open End)
Being united makes us
strong.
A house divided falls.
It is the only way America can get
Because we are a world power
and I feel like we have a good
system, its not perfect but it
works.
Our country, united, is one of the
most powerful nations on earth.
But we are slowly giving that
power away to other countries and
are limiting our effectiveness
We are a nation under one
government, it would be best if we
could figure out a way to all live
together in peace, even if that
means we have to all agree to
disagree like in any working
relationship.
This is still one country and even
though there are many with
differing points of view, the
grandest thing about this country
is that
THAT IS OK.
