The 2009 edition of the West Oakland Directory marks the 27th year of publication of this essential community guide for the lakes area.

This year also holds a special significance for our publishing group in that 2009 also marks the 50th year of publication for our newspaper, the Spinal Column Newsweekly, long considered the local news leader in this part of Oakland County. Our newspaper has a strong tradition of covering the key issues of concern for residents of the lakes area and it served as the launching pad for not only the West Oakland Directory but a number of other publications and on-line ventures in recent years.

The West Oakland Directory and the Spinal Column Newsweekly are part of the SCN Communications Group where we also produce Oakland Lakefront magazine, reaching 19,000 lakefront homes county-wide; Oakland Homes real estate magazine; Preferred Oakland Homes, a monthly full-color real estate magazine; and the MonthlyAdvertiser, a direct-mail monthly shopping guide reaching nearly 74,000 homes in the west Oakland area. Our group, still independently owned, also has created a number of websites, some tied to our existing publications and others as stand alone on-line entities.

For this year’s edition of the West Oakland Directory, we are once again distributing 50,000 copies of the West Oakland Directory by inserting the annual publication into the home-delivered copies of the Spinal Column Newsweekly. The West Oakland Directory is the largest guide to life in the western portion of Oakland County, and it reaches more local residents than any other similar publication.

We have followed our past approach of providing the most complete guide to the local communities, including the many service groups which help make up the fabric of life in the lakes area. We also provide for local residents and newcomers a guide to local government, local schools and the county and state government.

The community group information is also placed on-line at the newspaper’s website: www.spinalcolumonline.co, and the entire contents of the publication can be viewed in a flip-page format on the newspaper’s site. Lastly, we thank the businesses you see represented in this edition for their support in helping bring this annual community guide into your home.
