7 Studying the effects of hypotonic, hypertonic and isotonic solutions on animal cells Problem statement: What are the effects of hypotonic, hypertonic and isotonic solutions on animal cells? Hypothesis: Hypotonic solution causes the cell to become swells and bursts, hypertonic solution causes the cell become shrink and crenate while isotonic solution causes the cell has no change. Variables: Manipulative variable – Types of solution Responding variable – Shape of the cell Constant variable – Type of cell Materials and apparatus: Fresh chicken blood, 0.15 M and 0.50 M sodium chloride solutions, distilled water, filter paper, microscope slides, cover slips, and a light microscope. Procedures: 1. Prepare four slides and label them A, B, C and D. (P1) 2. Place a drop of chicken blood onto slide A and cover it with cover slip. (P1, P2) 3. Observe the shape of the blood cells under a light microscope. (P1) 4. Place on slide B a drop of distilled water then covered with a cover slip. (P1, P2) 5. Place a drop of blood at one side of the cover slip. Allow the blood to spread out beneath the cover slip by placing a filter paper on the opposite side. (P1, P2, P5) 6. Examine the prepared slide under the microscope. (P3) 7. Draw the shape of the red blood cells. (P3) 8. Repeat step 4 to 7 by substituting distilled water with 0.15 M sodium chloride solution (slide C) and 0.50 M sodium chloride solution (slide D). (P4)
