Life Lessons

Everyone learn many lessons, whether individuals, societies or countries. Some lessons are learned over a short time span, a very small section of life, like the lessons everyone who goes to a school does, taught by a teacher. But, one does not really understand long term lessons of life. I am over sixty years old now, learned many lessons whether at school or university, but the most important lessons, I am learning/understanding only now. I can understand them only while I recollect the small symptoms that I ignored while I was young and too busy to go ahead in life; earn money; accumulate information. I learned several languages, but my this learning was woefully inadequate in developing the understanding of the language of love. It is only now, while I am leading an idle life, and have all the time to reflect on the past, that I learned some new lessons that I never learned, no one could ever really teach me them. The lessons I want to talk about today are related to health, whether of my body, or the body of the society I have lived in. I start with lessons about my health. I always thought I have been healthy, all along my life span, hardly ever suffered from any critical common disease. It is only in the last decade that a disease slowly descended on my body. The disease that affected my movement in space. Anyone who sees me now, thinks it must be a disease of my legs only. But now I am understanding that is not the case. It is and has been a disease of my whole body. A disease that I slowly very slowly accumulated ever since I was born. I can remember how it progressed, and how and why I ignored the symptoms that were becoming apparent very slowly. For example small skin itchy eruptions in some parts of skin; some de-pigmented (white patches) or excessive pigmented spots in some part of body, indigestion and rather often flatulence (problem with regular bowel movements), cracks in the heels of sole of feet, leg sleeping; tooth decay, high diastolic blood pressure or lack of coordination of limbs. I used to run/jog almost a half marathon distance almost

everyday some thirty years ago, I never really cared for some skin diseases in some parts of body. I really ignored them, till a few years ago, till I started feeling more problem with normal walking. I tried several treatments, but nothing helped. Now, I believe they were the symptoms of a disease that is mainly due to the accumulation of toxins ( some kinds of microbes) in my body. I have started being more conscious of various parts of my body,I am now practicing exercising including yoga everyday very regularly and really learning some life – lessons, many of the above mentioned symptoms have indeed vanished. I have indeed learned that no ailment is unrelated in a body. They all affect the whole body, though they may be apparent in only one part of the body, as I am succeeding in curing my body, even if the rate of recovery is very slow. I have also learned not to be impatient, many ills in the body take their own sweet time to heal. I am learning that the recovery from a long disease, like mine, is seldom very comfortable, there are many pains that one has to suffer in the trajectory for recovery. Now I turn to lessons for societies that too have a body often rather large, like my country which is overpopulated (obese). The number of people that make up a country like India, will be as many as the number of cells in my body. The communities as much diverse ass the tissues of different part of a human body. The achievements in the past also as much or more then my educational achievements, take the example of spiritual and cultural achievements. But still it may be facing many problems in the present, because to govern a country is as delicate can of balancing as the act of standing straight and walking steadily as for a human body. The behavior of different sections, that are problematic points to a disease, whether it is small criminal (anti social) acts like raping minors or wanton violence, or corruption (whether at small scale or much larger (scams). Governments often ignore these symptoms and march ahead for economic development, often ignoring the social development in the belief that only economic growth matters. What is really the need now are leaders who are a kind of yogi, I think that only can cure the diseases societies/countries are now suffering of, just as myself. Rakesh Mohan Hallen
