Senator James Sanders Jr. Comments on Zimmerman Trial Verdict
QUEENS, NY - When George Zimmerman was found not guilty for second degree murder, Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Queens), expressed disgust that the death of Trayvon Martin would go unpunished. On February 26, 2012, Martin was walking home from a convenience store when he was approached, and eventually killed, by Zimmerman. The jury acquitted Zimmerman, apparently agreeing with the defendant‟s claim that the shooting was in self defense. Senator Sanders stated, “Fifty eight years after the brutal murder of Emmett Till, I am disgusted that the murder of another young black man has gone unpunished. An unarmed Trayvon Martin was murdered returning home from buying candy at a local store. He was stalked and murdered by a „wannabe cop‟ with a gun. While we have made so many steps forward in our fight for civil rights, this case proves we still have a long way to go in our fight.” ###
