Crystal Palace Ground Floor Plan: West

Crystal Palace Gallery Plan: East

Crystal Palace Gallery Plan: West

These images show the location of exhibits in the Exhibition. The first two are ground plans – one showing the east side of the Crystal Palace, the other the west side. The other pair are of the east and west galleries. These plans are to assist readers of The Great Exhibition: A Documentary History identify the location of exhibits described in the sections ‘IV. Guides to the Exhibition’ and ‘V. Visitors’ Accounts’. The ground plan and the plan of the gallery form, respectively, fold-out plates 1 and 2 bound into ‘First Report of the Commissioners for the Exhibition of 1851 to the Right Hon. Spencer Horatio Walpole’, in Official Descriptive and Illustrated Catalogue, Supplementary Volume (London: Spicer Bros. and W. Clowes & Sons, [1852]). Reproduced from editor’s copy.

II. Diagrams Showing Number of Visitors, etc

The Commissioners’ First Report included this coloured bar chart ‘shewing the fluctuations in the number of visitors, as affected by different days of the week, different scale of payment, rain and heat of the building’ – see The Great Exhibition: A Documentary History, Volume 3, p. 266. The key to the colours is located in the lower middle of the illustration. There is also a graph (bottom left) showing how the number of visitors depended on the days of the week, and a further graph (bottom right) charts the number of visitors throughout three separate days – Tuesday, 7 October (a shilling day), Friday, 10 October (when entrance cost 2s. 6d.) and Saturday, 14 June (a 5s. day). These informative graphs were produced by Captain Henry Charles Cunliffe Owen (1821–1867) of the Royal Engineers, who served as a superintendent in the foreign department of the Exhibition and latterly as a general superintendent. Reproduced with kind permission of the Bishopsgate Library, Bishopsgate Institute from their copy of First Report of the Commissioners for the Exhibition of 1851 to the Right Hon. Spencer Horatio Walpole (London: HMSO, 1852), fold-out between pp. 88 and 89; shelfmark London Collection, FIR K1.7.
