Thread cutting

. when head stock spindle rotates. the ratio between the rotation of head stock spindle and the longitudinal feed is found out. the lead screw rotates at the same speed. the tool is moved by lead screw in the longitudinal direction. The longitudinal feed should be equal to the pitch to be cut per revolution of work . The lead screw is connected by carriage by engaging half nut lever. when the job rotates. • The lead screw has fixed pitch. for obtaining different pitches on the work. the pitch of the work is equal to the pitch of the lead screw. So. • So. the lead screw and spindle are connected by change gears.Thread cutting • Thread cutting principle is shown in fig. the speed of the lead screw can be changed by fixing proper change gears between head stock spindle to lead screw. So.

the lead screw rotates in antic lock wise direction that is lead screw rotates in a direction opposite to that of head stock spindle.Thread cutting • The change gear calculation is made as follows: driver teeth/ driven teeth= teeth on spindle gear/teeth on lead screw gear = pitch to be cut on work/ pitch of lead screw The spindle gear is the driver gear. The simple gear train and a compound gear train are shown in the fig While cutting the right hand thread . . For cutting left hand thread . The lathe is supplied with 20 to 120 teeth in steps of 5 and 127 teeth gear. That is lead screw rotates in the same direction of the lathe spindle The tool moves towards the head stock end. The speed of the lead screw gear can be changed by suitable change gears. Two types of gear train are used for getting the required ratio between the driver and driven. the lead screw rotates in clockwise direction . The tool moves towards the tailstock end. lead screw gear is the driven gear.
