Many of our students advanced their education by enrolling into non-resident programs that allowed them to attend from

a distance. One such student was Rev. Theophilus S. Devitt who was awarded a Ph.B. Degree as part of the NonResidents program at Illinois Wesleyan University in 1890. At that time, he was a resident of Smithville Flatts, NY where he also served as school Principal. Meg Minor, Library Archivist with the Ames Library at Wesleyan, has provided materials containing information about their non-resident programs for anyone that may desire more background. The materials provided include a copy of a masters thesis abstract as well as part of a historical sketch that comes from the work: An Historical Sketch of the Illinois Wesleyan University, together with a Record of the Alumni, 1857-1895, William H. Wilder, ed. Bloomington, IL: The University Press, 1895. Thank you Meg for your thoughtful donation.
