It conveys meanings beyond the literal. SYMBOLIC The object of action represents something beyond itself. FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE SYMBOL RHYTHM

*It is a good idea to look at the title of the poem that we will explore, for the title gives a clue to the “controlling idea” in the poem.
