This week in 1992 finds Ernie Irvan winning the NASCAR DieHard 500 in Talladega, Ala.
The win would not come easy though as Irvan was stuck in last place 15 miles in after a plagued tire held him back.
It seemed Irvan was done for, but he swapped tires, stuck with it by drafting (a caution flag helped him too) and managed to edge Sterling Martin for the victory.
This would be Irvan’s sixth Winston Cup career victory as he averaged 176.308 mph around the track.
Along with Martin finishing second, Davey Allison and Ricky Rudd finished third and fourth respectively.
