Diabetes has become a very common heath problem that is ravaging humanity at a fast pace. For this man is responsible. This is lifestyle disease. All of us live life as guided the advertisement propaganda. Our eating habits are guided by these advertisements. As a result of the use of so much processed food, Trans fats etc. there is lack of insulin or absolutely no insulin. Well, there is no cure for diabetes, but if you are suffering from diabetes you need to control the blood glucose level. Once your blood sugar level is under control you can totally live a normal life. There are various natural remedies for diabetes that will help you to control the blood sugar level. Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorders that affects the body’s ability to either produce insulin or to use insulin effectively. According to statistics, the entire world is fast becoming the diabetic capital. Really a large number of young people are being diagnosed with the condition. The essential reason is the mushrooming of fast foods that use processed ingredients and fatty acids that are Trans-fats and on heating are easily converted into free radicals.

Holy Basil Leaves
Also known as tulsi. This is Holy Indian herbal plant. Leaves of holy basil are packed with antioxidants and essential oils that produce eugenol, methyl eugenol and caryophyllene. Collectively these substances help the pancreatic beta cells (cells that store and release insulin) function properly. This in turn helps increase sensitivity to insulin. An added advantage is that the antioxidants present in the leaves help beat the ill effects of oxidative stress.

Tip: Have two to three tulsi leaves whole, or about one tablespoon full of its juice on an empty stomach to lower the blood sugar levels daily. As a child I grew up taking these leaves daily as mouth freshener. This has formed a natural habit.

Indian Gooseberry
Indian gooseberry also known as Amla can also be used in controlling the blood sugar level. Enriched with high vitamin C, Indian gooseberry juice can be really effective for the pancreas. Take two to three Indian gooseberries and take out their seeds and then grind it properly to make a fine paste. Now with the help of a cloth you can squeeze out the juice. Take two tablespoon of Indian gooseberry juice and mix it with one cup of water and drink it daily on empty stomach. Alternatively take one tablespoonful of Indian gooseberry juice and mix it with a cup of bitter gourd juice and drink it daily for a few months. During winter when this fruit is available my mother used to make fresh coriander or mint chutney. If the fresh fruit is not available you can use the powder from the dried fruit that is easily available in Indian Groceries. Take ½ tsp powder with water or milk.

Flax Seeds
Due to their high fiber content flaxseeds help digestion and aid in the proper absorption of fats and sugars. Consuming flax seed helps reduce a diabetic’s postprandial sugar level by almost 28 per cent. Flaxseed meal can be incorporated as part of daily diet in making flat bread, baked breads, flaxseed punches and you can innovate your own way of consuming it.

Leaves of bilberry plant
Also called the neelabadari plant, it has been used in Ayurveda for many centuries to control diabetes. Recently the Journal of Nutrition stated that the leaves of the Bilberry plant contain high amounts of anthocyanidin, which enhance the action of various proteins involved in the glucose transportation and subsequent fat metabolism. Due to this unique property, bilberry leaves are a great way to lower one’s blood sugar levels. It is hard to get. You can use other items if this is not available.

Also known as dalchini. It is an effective antidote for sugar. It improves insulin sensitivity and lower blood glucose levels. Having as little as ½ teaspoon of cinnamon per day can improve one’s insulin sensitivity and help

controlling weight, thereby one’s risk for heart disease.


Powdered cinnamon or whole has the ability to lower blood sugar levels. Add three to four table spoon of cinnamon powder to four glasses of boiling water. Simmer for half an hour in low flame, and then strain the mixture. Drink this mixture daily to cure diabetes. Else you can take a pinch of cinnamon and eat with warm water every day. Tip: Include about 1 gram of dalchini into your daily diet for about a month to help lower blood sugar levels.

Green Tea
Unlike other tea leaves, green tea is unfermented and as a result it is quite high in polyphenol content. Polyphenol is a strong antioxidant and hypo-glycemic compound that helps control the release of blood sugars and helps the body use insulin better.

Drumstick leaves
Also called moringa, the leaves of this plant are best known for their ability to boost one’s energy. In the case of diabetics, the moringa leaf increases satiety and slows the breakdown of food and lower blood pressure. Use these leaves as part of your daily diet. This can be done by cooking the leaves, adding to

your dals and gravies, making fritters, decocting along with lemon gest and using daily as tea.

Also known as psyllium husk is often used as a laxative. When isabgol comes in contact with water, it swells to form a gel-like substance. This slows the breakdown and absorption of blood glucose. Isabgol also protects the stomach lining from ulcers and acidity. Available at all Indian Stores.

Bittergourd or Karela
Rich in plant insulin-polypeptide-P, a biochemical that is useful in reducing blood sugar. Tip: Have karela at least once a week either as a subzi or in a curry. If you want quick results, try having a glass of karela juice on an empty stomach once in three days. Having bitter gourd juice on an empty stomach can be really good for those suffering from diabetes. First remove the seeds of two to three bitter gourd and then with the help of a juicer take out the juice of bitter gourd. Add some water and then drink the juice first thing in the morning. It is one of the best home remedies for diabetes. Also it is a good idea to include one dish made of bitter gourd daily in your diet. This will help a lot in keeping the blood glucose level in control.

A glycoside present in the seeds of Indian blackberry prevents the conversion of starch to sugar. It lowers blood sugar and helps prevent insulin spikes. Jambul also has properties that can protect you from heart diseases and other vascular disorders. Jambul also known as jamun can help a lot in controlling blood sugar level. Each part of the Jambul plant such as the leaves, berry and seeds can be used by those suffering from diabetes. Whenever this seasonal fruit is available in the market, try to include it in your diet as it can be very effective for the pancreas. Else you can make a powder of dried seeds of Jambul fruit and eat this powder with water twice a day.

Fenugreek is another herb that can also be used to control diabetes. Soak two tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Drink this water along with the seeds in the morning on an empty stomach. Follow this remedy without any fail for a few months to bring down your high glucose level. Even eating two tablespoon of powdered fenugreek seeds daily with milk can be of great help.

Due to its vitamin C and high fiber content, guava can be really helpful in maintaining the blood sugar level. But before eating a guava you must peel off the skin for better results. So, those suffering for diabetes can eat guava without any problem. However, too much consumption of guava in a day is not recommended at all.

Mango Leaves
The delicate and tender mango leaves can be used to treat diabetes at home. Soak ten to fifteen tender mango leaves in a glass of water and leave it overnight. Filter this water and drink it on an empty stomach in the morning. Else, you can dry the tender leaves in the shade and grind it. Take half a teaspoon of this powder mango leaves two times daily. This is also an effective home remedy for diabetes.

Aloe Vera
One kind of natural concoction for diabetes can be made with Aloe vera gel, bay leaf and turmeric. To make this herbal medicine, take one to two teaspoons of ground Bay Leaf, one teaspoon of turmeric and mix it properly with an equal amount of aloe vera gel. Drink this solution daily, before lunch and dinner. It will help in maintaining your blood sugar level.

The amount of water you drink on daily basis can also help in controlling high blood sugar level. Water will mobilize the high sugar content in blood and thus will help in controlling it.
