Mechanism of Action blocks the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid. By blocking the enzyme, the production of acid is decreased, and this allows the stomach and esophagus to heal.

Contraindication are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to substituted benzimidazoles or to any component of the formulation. Hypersensitivity reactions may include anaphylaxis, anaphylactic shock, angioedema, bronchospasm, interstitial nephritis, and urticaria

Side Effects The most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headaches, rash and dizziness. Nervousness, abnormal heartbeat, muscle pain, weakness, leg cramps, and water retention occur infrequently.

Nursing Responsibilities 1. Monitor patient for severe rash, worsening of symptoms and chills 2. Take the drug before meals 3. Assess for skin lesions, reflexes, urinary output abdominal exam and respiratory auscultation before administering meds 4. Monitor therapeutic effectiveness and adverse reactions at beginning of therapy and periodically throughout therapy.

Indication: Omeprazole potentially can increase the concentrations in blood Of diazepam (Valium), warfarin (Coumadin), and phenytoin (Dilantin) by decreasing the elimination of these drugs by the liver.
