Mr. David Sweet Chair, Standing Committee on Industry, Science, and Technology Chris Charlton, MP
Hamilton Mountain

Dear David, 1 am writing today regarding the important issue of telecommunications policy and regulation. Recent weeks and months have seen major industry and consumer players debating the future of this vital sector through the media. The Minister has gone so far as to launch a partisan website and improvise a behindclosed-doors "national" tour.

I' m calling on you to help Canadians have their say, out in the open. Telecommunications policy is part of a fast-evolving context, with far-ranging and long term consequences that require thoughtful public attention. Important deadlines for the auction of the 700 MHz aspect of Canada's radio spectrum are also close at hand. This context merits an examination to ensure there is long-term competition and access to mobile services across Canada. It is the role and responsibility of Parliament to do everything in its power to clear the air and bring optimal benefits to Canadians.

I am writing to urge you to convene extraordinary hearings of the industry committee before the prorogation of Parliament. It is not too late to examine recent developments to ensure that all Canadians will have access to the highest speeds at the best prices.
