I S 0 (the International Organizationfor Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). Introduction

The performance of protective coatings of paint related and products appliedto steel is significantly affected by the state of the steel surface immediately prior to painting. The principal factors that are known to influence this performance are a) the b) the presence of rust and mill scale;

presence of surface contaminants, including salts, dust, oils and greases;

c)thesurfaceprofile. International Standards I S 0 8501, I S 0 8502 and IS0 8503 have been prepared to provide methods of assessing these factors, while I S 0 8504 provides guidance on the preparation methods that are available for cleaning steel substrates, indicating the capabilities of each in attaining specified levels of cleanliness. These InternationalStandardsdonotcontainrecommendationsfortheprotective coating systemsto be applied to thesteel surface. Neither do they contain recommendations for the surface quality requirements for specific situations even though surface quality canhave a direct influence on the choice of protective coating to be applied and on its performance. Such recommendations are found in other documents such as national standards and codes of practice. It will be necessary for the users of these International Standards t o ensure that the qualities specifiedare
- compatible and appropriate both for the environmental conditions to which the steel will be exposed and for the protective coating system to be used; -

within the capability of the cleaning procedure specified.

The four International Standards referred to above deal with the following aspects of preparation of steel substrates :

- Surface preparation methods,

Each of these International Standards is in turn divided into separate parts. This part of I S 0 8501 identifies four levels (designated as "rust grades") of mill scale and rust that are commonly found onsurfaces of uncoated erected steeland steel held in stock. It also identifies certain degrees of visual cleanliness(designated as "preparation grades") after surface preparation of uncoated steel surfaces and of steel surfaces after overall removal of any previous coating. These levels of visual cleanliness are related to the common methods of surface cleaning that are used prior to painting. This part of IS0 8501 is intended to be a tool for visual assessment of rust grades and of preparation grades. It includes 28 representative photographic examples. NOTES 1 Twenty-four of the photographs originate from theSwedishstandard SIS 055900-1967, Pictorial surface preparation standards for painting steel surfaces,which is superseded by this part of I S 0 8501 (see annex A). The other four photographs originate from the German standard DIN 55 928, Part 4, Supplement 1 (August 19781, Protection of steelstructures from corrosion by organic and metallic coatings; preparation and testing of surfaces; photographic standards. Originally SIS 05 59 O0 was developed by the Swedish Corrosion Institute in co-operation with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the Steel Structures Painting Council (SSPC),USA.Thereareanumberofnationalstandardsbasedon SIS 0559 00, such as DIN 55928, Part 4 (19771, TGL 18730/02 (19771, DS 2019 (19671, AS 1627, Part 9-1974, In addition, thereare other standardsthat have a ASTM D 2200-67 (1980) and SSPC-Vis 1-82 T. similar layout, for example JSRA SPSS-1975, but which are less widely used and therefore were not taken into account. The reasons for adopting the essential elements of SIS 0559 00, including its format, are as follows : a) SIS 05 59 O0 is already used on a world-wide scale; not b) the creation of a completely new set of photographs would be costly and would necessarily introduce any corresponding improvements;

c) previous and current documents relating to this established system of rust grades and preparation grades could continue to be used in the future without amendment andwithout confusion; d)- the A5 (pocket) size is convenient to handle and to refer to on site. This part of I S 0 8501 represents a slight extension of earlier editions of SIS 05 59 00 in that itis of adhering paint and other foreign matter in addiapplicable also to surfaces that show residues tion to mill scale and rust.

1 Scopeandfield

This part of IS0 8501 specifies a series of rust grades and preparation grdes of steel surfaces (see clauses 3 and 4, respectively). The variousgrades are defined by written descriptions together with photographs that are representative examples within the tolerance for each grade as described in words. It is applicable to hot-rolled steel surfaces prepared for painting by methods such as blast-cleaning,hand andpowertoolcleaningandflame cleaning, although these methods rarely lead to comparable results. Essentially, these methods are intended for hot-rolled steel, but blast-cleaning methods, in particular, could also be used on coldrolled steel of sufficient thickness to withstand any deformation caused by the impact of the abrasive or the effects of power tool cleaning. This part ofIS0 8501 is applicable also to steel substrates that show residues of firmly adhering paint and other foreign matter (see note 2 t o 4.1) in addition t o residual mill scale.. NOTE - The preparation grades of previously painted steel surfaces after only localized removal of paint coatingsform the subject of IS0 8501-2.

It relates the cleanliness of the surface to its visual appearance. In manyinstances, this is sufficient for the purpose but for coatings likely to be exposed to severe environmects, such as water immersion and continuous condensation conditions, consideration should be given to testing for soluble salts and other invisible contaminants on the visually clean surface by the physical and chemical methods which form the subjects of the various parts of IS0 8502. The roughness characteristics of the surface should also be considered by reference to I S 0 8503. -~

Four rust grades, designated A, B, C and D respectively, are specified. The rustgrades are defined by written descriptions together with representative photographic examples (see clause 6).

Preparation grades
General

A number of preparation grades, indicating the method of surface preparation and the degree of cleaning, are specified. The preparation grades are defined (see 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4) by written descriptions of the surface appearance after the cleaning operation, together with representative photographic examples (see clause 6).

Each Preparation grade is designated by the appropriate letters "Sa", "St" or "FI" to indicate the type ofcleaning method used. The number following, if any, indicates the degree of cleaning from mill scale, rust and previous coatings. The photographs are designated by the original rust grade before cleaning and the designation of the preparation grade, for example B Sa 2112.
NOTES

1 Theterm"foreignmatter"used in 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4may includewater-solublesaltsand welding residues. These contaminants cannot be completely removed from the surface by dry blast-cleaning, hand and power tool cleaning or flame cleaning; wet blast-cleaning should be used.

2 Mill scale, rust or a paint coating is consideredto be poorly adhering if it can be removed by lifting with a blunt putty knife.

Blast-cleaning, Sa

Surface preparation by blast-cleaning is designated by the letters "Sa". Prior t o blast-cleaning, any heavy layers of rust shall be removed by chipping. Visible oil, grease and dirt shall also be removed. After blast-cleaning, the surface shall be cleaned from loose dust and debris.
NOTE - For descriptions of surface preparation methods by blast-cleaning, including treatment prior to, and after, the blast-cleaning procedure, see I S 0 8504-2.

Thoroughblast-cleaning

When viewed without magnification, the surface shall be free from visible oil, grease and dirt, and from most of the mill scale, rust, paint coatings and foreign matter. Any residual contamination shall be firmly adhering (see note 2 to 4.1). See photographs B Sa 2, C Sa 2 and D Sa 2.

Verythoroughblast-cleaning

When viewed without magnification, the surface shall be free from visible oil, grease and dirt, and frommill scale, rust, paint coatings and foreignmatter. Blast-cleaning to visuallycleansteel

When viewed without magnification, the surface shall be free from visible oil, grease and dirt, and shall be free from mill scale, rust, paint coatings and foreign matter. It shall have auniformmetalliccolour. See photographsA Sa 3, B Sa 3, C Sa 3 and D Sa 3.

Hand and power tool cleaning, St

Surface preparation by hand and power tool cleaning, such as scraping, wirebrushing, machine-brushing and grinding, is designated by the letters St. Prior to hand and power tool cleaning, any heavy layers of rust shall be removed by chipping. Visible oil, grease and dirt shall also be removed. After hand and power tool cleaning, the surface shall be cleaned from loose dust and debris. NOTES

Thorough hand and power tool cleaning

When viewed without magnification, the surface shall be free from visible oil, grease and dirt, and from poorly adhering mill scale, rust, paint coatings and foreign matter (see note 2 to 4.11, See photographs B St 2, C St 2 and D St 2.

Very thorough hand and power

tool cleaning

As for St 2, but the surface shall be treated much more thoroughly to give a metallic sheen arising from the metallic substrate. See photographs B St 3 ; C St 3 and D St 3.

Flame cleaning, FI

Surface preparation by flame cleaningis designated by the letters FI. NOTE - Flame cleaning includes final power tool wire-brushing to remove the products of the cleaning process; hand.wire-brushing does not achieve a satisfactory surfacefor painting.

Prior to flame cleaning, any heavy layers of rust shall be removed by chipping. After flame cleaning, the surface shall be cleaned by power tool wire-brushing.

Flame cleaning

When viewed without magnification, the surface shall be free from mill scale, rust, paint coatings and foreign matter. Any remaining residues shall show only as a discoloration of the surface (shades of different colours). See photographs A FI, B FI, C FI and D FI.

Procedure for visual assessment of steel substrates

Either in good diffuse daylightor in equivalent artificial illumination, examine the steel surface and compare it with each of the photographs (see clause 61, using normal vision. Place the appropriate photograph close to, and in the plane of, the steel surface to be assessed. For rust grades, record theassessment as the worstgrade that is evident. For preparation grades, record the assessment as that grade nearest in appearance to that of the steel surface.
NOTES 1 In addition to the type of cleaning method used, for example dry blast-cleaning using a particular type of abrasive, the following factors can influence the result of the visual assessment :

These photographs, which are not magnified, are copies that havebeen reproduced by a special technique whereby the colour printis applied to the back of plastics sheets. To prevent the specimens from being scratched, paper leaves have been inserted between the plastics sheets. For ease of manufacture, the plastics sheets do not carry page numbers. For convenience in use, the photographs are displayed in the order shown in the figure. Four photographs relate specifically to the rust grades A, B, C and D (see clause 3). Twenty-four photographs, A Sa 2V2 to D FI, relate specifically to the preparation grades obtained by dry blast-cleaning, by hand and power tool cleaning, and by flame cleaning (see clause 4). Other methods, such as wet blast-cleaning, produce surfaces that may differ in appearance, colour, etc., but the photographs can still be used to give an indication of the preparation grade. Fourteen photographs, A Sa 2112 to D Sa 3, show steel surfaces that have been subjected t o dry blast-cleaning with abrasives containing quartz sand. The use of such abrasives in enclosed areas is prohibited in many countries except under strictly controlled conditions. Therefore abrasives of other types (and hence colour) are often used for dry blast-cleaning. These abrasives may produce a different surface appearance, even after meticulous cleaning of the blast-cleaned surface. There are no photographs representing A Sa 1, A Sa 2, A St 2 or A St 3 because these preparation grades are not achievable and the existing photographs are sufficiently indicative.

Degrs de prparation

Gnralits

Un certain nombre de degrs de prparation sont dcrits, indiquant la mthode de prparation de surface et le degr de nettoyage. Les degrs de prparation sont definis (voir 4.2,4.3 et 4.41 dans un texte, dcrivant l'aspect de la surface aprs l'opration de nettoyage, accompagn d'exemples reprsentatjfs sous forme de photographies (voir chapitre 6). Chaque degr de prparation est dsign par les lettres ((Sa)), ({St)) ou(( FI)) qui indiquent le type de mthode de nettoyageutilis. Le nombre qui suitventuellement indique le degr de nettoyage de la calamine, de la rouille et des revtements prcdents. Les photographies sont dsignes par le degr de rouille antrieur au nettoyage et la dsignation du degr de prparation, par exemple: B Sa 2V2.
NOTES
Le terme particule trangre )) employ en4.2, 4.3 et 4.4 peut inclure des sels solubles dans l'eau et des rsidus de soudage. NOTE - Le nettoyage B la flamme comporte un brossage mcanique final B la brosse mtallique pour enlever les produits rsultant de l'opration de nettoyage; le brossage B la main ne donne pas une surface propre B l'application de la peinture. Avant le nettoyage la flamme, les couches paisses de rouille doivent tre enleves par martelage. Examiner le subjectile d'acierl'il nu, la lumire du jour par rflexion ou sous clairage artificiel quivalent et le comparer avec chacune des photographies (voir du subjecti1e. valuer et dans son chapitre 6). Placer la photographie approprie pres plan. Pour lesdegrs de rouille, retenir l'aspect le plus dfavorable. Pour lesdegrs de prparation, retenir l'aspect le plus proche de celui du subjectile d'acier.

Photographies

Vingt-huit photographies pour la comparaison avec des subjectiles d'acier sont reproduites en annexe. Ces photographies, qui n'ontpas t agrandies, sont des copies reproduitesselon une technique spciale. L'impression en couleur est ralise au verso de feuillets plastiques. Afin d'viter que les spcimens soient rays, des feuilles de papier sont insres entre les feuillets plastiques. Pour faciliter la fabrication, les feuillets plastiques ne sontpas pagins. Pour faciliter l'utilisation, les photographies sont disposes dans l'ordre indiqu la figure. Quatre photographies illustrent spcialement les degrs de rouille A, B, C et D (voir chapitre 3). Vingt-quatre photographies, de A Sa 2112 D FI, illustrent les degrs de prparation obtenus par dcapage sec, nettoyage la main et la machine et nettoyage la flamme (voir chapitre 4). D'autres mthodes, telles que le dcapage sous eau, donnent des surfaces qui peuvent diffrer quant l'aspect, la couleur, etc., mais les photographies restent valables pour indiquer le degr de prparation. Quatorze photographies, de A Sa 2112 D Sa 3, reprsentent des subjectiles d'acier soumis au dcapage sec l'aide d'abrasifs contenant du sable de quartz. L'usage de tels abrasifs dans des locaux fermes est interdit dans de nombreuxpays, sauf sous des conditions svrement contrles. On utilise donc souvent d'autres abrasifs (donc d'une autre couleur) pour le dcapage sec. Ces abrasifs peuvent donner un aspect de surface diffbrent, mme aprs un nettoyage soign du subjectile dcap.

ThepresentSwedishStandard SS 05 59 00, 3 r d edition,consistsofthe Swedish version of the International Standard I S 0 8501 -1 :I 988.

SS 05 59 00, 3rd edition, supersedes SIS 05 59 00, 2nd edition from 1967. The change of the prefix to "SS" from earlier "SIS" is in agreement with the rules applicable to Swedish Standards published 1979 and onwards.
Textually the 3rd edition differs considerably from its predecessors. The technical result, however, remains on the whole unchanged. I n previous editions of the Swedish Standard, the rust grades and the preparation grades were defined by 24 photographs. The amount of corrosion and preparation leading up to the grades in question were thereafter described in words, that referred back to the photographs. Thus, the words were subordinated to the picture. I n I S 0 8501 -1 :I 988,on the contrary, and by that also in SS 05 59 00, 3rd edition, the rust grades and the preparation grades are defined by descriptions inwordstogetherwithphotographsbeingrepresentativeexamples.Words and picture have become equivalent. The descriptions of the rust grades have not been significantly changed. The descriptions of the preparation grades are no longer founded on the cleaning process but solely on the appearance of the steel surface. The designations of rust grades and of preparation grades are the same as previously.

As representative examples I S 0 has chosen the 2 4 photographs of the Swedish Standard and moreover out of DIN 55928 the 4 photographs showing surfaces prepared by so-called flame cleaning. The latter means an extension of the Swedish Standard. Another extension results from the fact that I S 0 8501-1 shall be applicable also to steel surfaces, that show residues (traces) of firmly adhering paint and other foreign matter.

IS0 8501 r avsedd att vara ett verktyg fr visuellutvrdeDennadelav 28 reprering av rostgrader och av frbehandlingsgrader. Den innehller sentativa fotografiska exempel,

Einleitung

Das Verhalten von Schutzbeschichtungen auf Stahl wird wesentlich vomZustand der Stahloberflche unmittelbar vor dem Beschichten beeinflut. Von grundlegendem Einflu fr dieses Verhalten sind :
a)

Rost undWalzhaut;

b) c)

Oberflchenverunreinigungen, einschlielich Salze, Staub, le und Fette;


Rauheit.

Dementsprechend wurden in IS0 8501, I S 0 8502 und IS0 8503 Verfahren ausgearbeitet, mit denendiese Einflugren beurteilt werden knnen. IS0 8504 stellt einen Leitfaden fr Vorbereitungsverfahrep zum Reinigen von Stahloberflchen dar, wobei fr jedes Verfahren angegeben wird, welche Reinheitsgrade erreicht werden knnen.

Jede dieser Internationalen Normen ist wiederum in Teile aufgeteilt. Dieser Teil von IS0 8501 legt - unter der Benennung ,,Rostgrade - vier Grade fr Rost und Zunder fest, wie sie im allgemeinen auf Oberflchen von unbeschichteten Stahlbauten und Stahl, der gelagert wird, anzutreffen sind. Festgelegt sind auch unter der Benennung ,,OberfIchenvorbereitungsgrade - bestimmte Grade der visuell erkennbaren Reinheit nach der Vorbereitung unbeschichteter Stahloberflchen bzw. nachganzflchigemEntfernenvorhandenerBeschichtungen. Diese Grade der visuell erkennbaren Reinheit sind in Beziehunggesetzt zu denblichen, vordem Beschichten angewendeten Verfahren der Oberflchenreinigung. Dieser Teil von I S 0 8501 soll als Hilfsmittel zur visuellen Beurteilung der Rostgrade und Oberflchenvorbereitungsgrade dienen. Er enthlt 28 reprsentative photographische Beispiele. ANMERKUNGEN 1 24 dieser Vergleichsmuster stammen aus der Schwedischen Norm SIS 05 59 00-1967, ostGteklassen fr die Vorbereitung von Stahlobeiflchenfr ostgrade von Stahlobeiflchen und schutzanstriche, welche durch die vorliegende Norm ersetzt wird (siehe Anhang A). Es wird eine Reihe von Oberflchenvorbereitungsgradenfestgelegt, welche das Verfahren zur Oberflchenvorbereitung und den Grad der Reinigung angeben, Die Oberflchenvorbereitungsgrade sind definiert (siehe 4.2, 4.3 und 4.4) durch Beschreibungen des Aussehens der Oberflche nach dem Reinigen und durch reprsentative photographische Beispiele (siehe Abschnitt 6).
Jeder Oberflchenvorbereitungsgradwird durch die Buchstaben Sa, St oder FI bezeichnet, welche das angewendete Reinigungsverfahren angeben. Die den Buchstaben folgende Zahl kennzeichnet den Grad der Reinigung von Zunder, Rost und alten Beschichtungen. 5 Verfahren fr die visuelle Beurteilung von Stahloberflchen


Die Stahloberflche ist entweder bei hellem diffusen Tageslicht oder bei entsprechender knstlicherBeleuchtung zu untersuchen und mit jedem der Vergleichsmuster (siehe Abschnitt 6) ohne Vergrerung zu vergleichen. Das entsprechendeVergleichsmuster ist in der gleichen Ebene dicht an die zu beurteilende Stahloberflche zu halten. Bei der Beurteilung vonRostgraden gilt der schlechteste Rostgrad, der vorkommt. Bei der Beurteilung von Oberflchenvorbereitungsgraden gilt derjenige Grad als erreicht, der dem Erscheinungsbild der Stahloberflche am nchsten kommt. ANMERKUNGEN

U m zu vermeiden, da die Vergleichsmuster zerkratzt werden, sind zwischen den Kunststoffolien Papierbltter eingelegt. Wegen der einfacheren Herstellung tragen die Kunststoffolien keine Seitenzahlen. Zur leichteren Handhabung werden die Vergleichsmuster in der aus dem Bild ersichtlichen Reihenfolge wiedergegeben.

4 Vergleichsrnuster beziehen sich aufdie Rostgrade A, B, C und D (siehe Abschnitt 3). 24 Vergleichsmuster, A Sa 2 1 1 2 bis D FI, beziehen sich auf die Oberflchenvorbereitungsgrade fr trockenes Strahlen, Oberflchenvorbereitung von Hand und maschiAndere Vernelle Oberflchenvorbereitung sowie Flammstrahlen (siehe Abschnitt 4). fahren, wie Nastrahlen, ergeben Oberflchen, die in Aussehen, Farbe usw. abweichen knnen. Die Vergleichsmuster knnen jedoch noch benutzt werden, um einen Anhaltspunkt fr den Oberflchenvorbereitungsgrad zu geben.

14 Vergleichsmuster, A Sa 2V2 bis D Sa 3, zeigen Stahloberflchen, die mit quarzsandhaltigen Strahlmitteln trocken gestrahlt wurden. Die Verwendung solcher Strahlmittel in geschlossenen Rumen ist invielen Lndern verboten bzw. nur unter strengen Auflagen erlaubt. Deshalb werden zum trockenen Strahlen hufig andere Strahlmittel (mit anderer Farbe) verwendet. Diese Strahlmittel knnen, selbst nach sehr grndlicher Reinigung der gestrahlten Oberflche, ein anderes Erscheinungsbild bewirken.
Es gibt keine Vergleichsmuster fr A Sa 1, A Sa 2, A St 2 oder A St 3, weil diese Oberflchenvorbereitungsgrade nicht verwirklicht werden knnen. Auerdem reichen die vorhandenen Vergleichsmuster.

lnleiding

Het gedrag van beschermende deklagen van ved en aanverwante Produkten op staal hangt in belangrijke mate af van de toestand van het staaloppervlak kort voor het opbrengen van de verf. De voornaamste factoren waarvan bekend is dat ze dit gedrag beinvloeden, zijn : a) deaanwezigheidvanroesten walshuid;

b) deaanwezigheidvan olin en vetten;


c) het profiel

oppervlakteverontreinigingen, waaronder zouten, stof,

van het oppervlak.

De Internationale normen IS0 8501, IS0 8502 en I S 0 8503 zijn opgesteld met het doel rnethoden vast te leggen om deze factoren te bepalen. IS0 8504 vormt een leidraad voor de toepassing van de beschikbare voorbehandelingsmethodenvoor het reinigen van staaloppervlakken, waarbij voor elke rnethode de mogelijkheden worden aangegeven om voorgeschreven niveaus van reinheid te bereiken. Bovengenoemde Internationale Normen bevatten geen aanbevelingen voor systemen van bescherrnende deklagen voor toepassing op het staaloppervlak. Evenmin bevatten zij aanbevelingen ten aanzien van de eisen te stellen aan de oppervlaktekwaliteit voor specifieke situaties, ook al kan de oppervlaktekwaliteit direct van invloed zijn op de keuze van de toe te passen beschermende deklaag en op het gedrag ervan. Zulke aanbevelingen worden gevonden in andere documenten, zoals nationale normen en praktijk richtlijnen. De gebruikers van deze Internationale Normen zullen ervoor moeten zorgen dat de gespecificeerde eigenschappen.

Elk van deze Internationale normen is op zijn beurt weer opgedeeld in verschillende delen.
Dit deel van I S 0 8501 benoemt vier niveaus ("roestgraden" genaamd) van aanwezigheid van walshuiden roest, zoals gewoonlijk wordtgevonden op het oppervlak van onbedekt gernonteerd staal en opgeslagen staal. Het onderscheidt ook enkele graden van visuele reinheid ("reinheidsgraden" genaarnd) na voorbehandeling van onbedekte staaloppervlakken en na voorbehandeling van staaloppervlakken waarvan eventuele eerdere deklagen geheel verwijderd zijn. Deze niveaus van visueel beoordeelde reinheid hebben betrekking op de gebruikelijke methoden van oppervlaktereiniging zoals die vr het verven worden toegepast. Dit deel van IS0 8501 is bedoeld als hulpmiddel bj de visuele beoordeling van roest-en reinheidsgraden. Het bevat 28 foto's van representatieve voorbeelden. OPMERKINGEN

De wezenlijke elementen van SIS 05 90 00, met inbegrip van de presentatie ervan, zijn o m de volgende redenen overgenomen : a)

SIS 05 90 O0 wordt reeds over de gehele wereld toegepast;

b) het maken van een geheel nieuwe serie foto's zou kostbaar zijn en zou niet per definitie leiden t o t verbeteringen die dat rechtvaardigen;

1 Onderwerp en toepassingsgebied
Dit deel van IS0 8501 beschrijft een reeks van roest- en reinheids graden van staaloppervlakken (zie hoofdstuk 3 resp. 4). De verschillende graden worden omschreven en verduidelijkt met foto's die representatieve voorbeelden geven binnen de tolerantie voor elke graad, z&!s beschreven. Het is toepasbaar voor warmgewalste staaloppervlakken, die voor het schilderen worden gereinigd volgens rnethoden als stralen, met de hand reinigen/rnachinaal reinigen en vlarnreinigen, hoewel deze rnethoden zelden tot vergelijkbare resultaten leiden. OPMERKING - IS0 8501-2 behandelt de reinheidsgraden van reeds eerder geschilderde Staal. oppervlakken waarvan de verflaag slechts plaatselijk is verwijderd.

Het koppelt de reinheid van het oppervlak aan het visuele voorkornen. In veel gevaller is dat voor het beoogde doel voldoende, maar voor deklagen die waarschijnlijk aar agressieve omstandigheden zullen worden blootgesteld, zoals onderdompeling ir water en voortdurende condensatie, dient te worden overwogen het op het oog reine oppervlak te beproeven op de aanwezigheid van oplosbare zouten en andere onzicht. bare verontrenigingen, en we1 volgens de fysiche en chemische rnethoden die in de onderscheiden delen van IS0 8502 worden behandeld. Er worden in vier roestgraden onderscheiden, te weten A, B, C en D. De roestgraden worden omschreven, waarbij foto's van representatieve voorbeelden worden gegeven (zie hoofdstuk 6)

Reinheidsgraden

4.1 Algemeen
Er worden een aantal reinheidsgraden onderscheiden, die de methode van voorbehandeling en de mate van reinheid aangeven. De reinheids graden worden met woorden omschreven (zie 4.2, 4.3 en 4.4) aan de hand van het uiterlijk van het oppervlak na de reinigingsbewerking, waarbij foto's van representatieve voorbeelden worden gegeven (zie hoofdstuk 6). Elke reinheidsgraad wordt aangeduid met de van toepassing zijnde letters "Sa", "St" of "FI" om de reinigingsmethode aan te geven. Als er een cijfer op volgt, geeft dat de mate aan waarin het oppervlak is gereinigd van walshuid, roest en vroegere deklagen. De codes bij de foto's bevatten de aanduiding van de oorspronkelijkeroestgraad, vr de reiniging, en de aanduiding van de reinheids graad, bijv. B Sa 2112.
OPMERKINGEN 1 Onderhetbegrip"vreemdematerialen" in 4.2, 4.3 en 4.4 kunnen ook in water oplosbare zouten en lasresten vallen. Deze verontreinigingen kunnen niet geheel van het oppervlak worden met dehandreinigen/machinaalreinigen of vlamstralen; nat venvijderddoordroogstralen, stralen moet dan worden toegepast.

Stralen, Sa

Oppervlaktebehandeling dor stralen wordt met de code "Sa" aangeduid. Vr het stralen moeten eventueel aanwezige dikke roestlagen worden afgebikt. Olie, vet en vuil, voor zover waarneernbaar, moeten eveneens worden verwijderd. Na het stralen moeten los stof en gruis van het oppervlak worden verwijderd.

OPMERKING - Voor een beschrijving van methoden van voorbehandeling door middel van stra len, met inbegrip van voor- en nabehandeling bij het stralen, wordt verwezen naar IS0 8504-2.

Sa 1

Licht stralen

Waargenomen met het blote oog dient het oppervlak vrij te zijn van zichtbare olie, vet en vuil, alsmede van los zittende walshuid, roest, verflagen en vreemde materialen (zie opmerking 2 bij 4.1). Zie foto's B Sa 1, C Sa 1 en D Sa 1.

Zorgvuldigstralen

Waargenomen met het blote oog dient het appervlak vrij te zijn van zichtbare olie, vet en vuil, alsmede van het grootstedeel van walshuid, roest, verflagen en vreemde materialen. Waargenomen met het blote oog dient het oppervlak vrij te zijn van zichtbare olie, vet en vuil, alsmede van walshuid, roest, verflagen en vreemde materialen. Sa 3

Met dehandreinigen/machinaalreinigen,

Oppervlaktebehandeling door met de hand reinigedmachinaal reinigen, zoals schrapen, draadborstelen, machinaal borstelen en slijpen, wordt met de code "St" aangeduid. Vr het met de hand reinigedmachinaal reinigen rnoeten eventueel aanwezige dikke roestlagen worden afgebikt. Olie, vet en vuil, voor zover waarneembaar, moeten eveneens worden verwijderd. Na het met dehandreinigen/machinaalreinigen oppervlak worden verwijderd.

4.4 Vlamreinigen, FI
Oppervlaktebehandeling door vlarnreinigen wordt met de code "FI" aangeduid.
OPMERKING - Bij het vlamreinigen is inbegrepen dat het oppervlak met een machinale draadborstel nabehandeld w o r d t o m de restprodukten van de reiniging te verwijderen; door draadborstelen met de hand .wordt 'geen geschikt oppervlak voor hef schilderen verkregen.

Vr het vlamreinigen rnoeteneventueel aanwezige dikke roestlagen worden afgebikt.

5 Werkwijze voor visuele beoordeling van staalopprvlakken


Onderzoek het staaloppervlak en vergelijk dat met elk van de foto's(zie hoofdstuk 6); dit dient met het blote oog te worden gedaan, en we1 in goed diffuus daglicht of in gelijkwaardig kunstlicht. Houd de desbetreffendefoto dichtbij het te beoordelen staaloppervlak, in hetzelfde vlak. Noteer als waardering voor de roestgraad de slechtste graad die te zien is. Noteer als waardering voor de reinheidsgraad die graad die het dichtst het uiterlijk van het staaloppervlak benadert.

Ter vergelijking met de staaloppervlakken zijn 28 foto's van representatieve voorbeelden toegevoegd. Deze foto's, die geen vergrotingen zijn, zijn afgedrukt volgens een speciale techniek waarbij de kleurendruk wordt toegepast op de achter zijde van kunststofvellen. Om te woorkomen dat er krassen komen op de voorbeelden, zijn er papieren schutvellen tussen de kunststofpagina's aangebracht. Om de fabricage te vereenvoudigen, zijn de kunststof pagina's niet genummerd. Om hetgebruik te vergemakkelijken, zijn de foto's gerangschikt in de volgorde zoals hierna in de figuur is aangegeven. Vier foto's hebben betrekking op roestgraden

A, B,

C en D (zie hoofdstuk 3).

24 foto's, A Sa 2112 tot D FI, hebben betrekking op de reinheidsgraden na droogstralen, met de hand reinigenlmachinaal reinigen en vlamreinigen (zie hoofdstuk 4). Volgens andere methoden zoals natstralen ontstaan oppervlakkenmet een ander uiterlijk, kleur e.d., maar de foto's kunnen toch wordengebruikt als indicatie voor de reinheidsgraad. Veertien foto's, A Sa 2112 tot D Sa 3, tonen staaloppervlakken die onderworpen zijn geweest aan droogstralenmetmiddelendiekwartszandbevatten. Het gebruikvan zulke straalmiddelen in besloten ruimten is in veel landen verboden, tenzij aan streng gecontroleerde voorwaarden wordt voldaan. Daarom worden vaak andere typen straalmiddelen (met bijgevolg een andere kleur) voor droogstralen toegepast. Deze straalmiddelen kunnen soms een verschillend uiterlijk van het oppervlak tot gevolg hebben, ook na nauwgezette reiniging van het gestraalde oppervlk. Er zijn geen foto's aanwezig die A Sa 1, A Sa 2, A St 2 en A .St 3 weergeven, daar deze reinheidsgraden in de praktijk niet haalbaar zijn en de bestaande foto's een voldoende aanduiding zijn.

L'efficacia dei rivestimenti protettivi sull'acciaio influenzata in modosignificativo dalle condizioni della superficie d'acciaio prima della verniciatura. I fattori principal Che notoriamente influiscono su questa operazione sono a) b) c) la presenza di ruggine e scorie di laminazione; la presenza di impurit quali sali, polvere, olio e grasso;

il profilo della superficie.

Le Norme internazionali I S 0 8501,IS0 8502 e I S 0 8503 sono state elaborate per fornire rnetodi Che perrnettono di valutare questi fattori, rnentre I'ISO 8504 offre una guida ai rnetodi di preparazione Che sono disponibili per la pulitura di superfici d'acciaio, indicando !e possibilit Che ciascun rnetodo offre per raggiungere livellispecific di pulitura. Ciascuna di queste Norme internazionali a sua volta suddivisa in parti separate. Questa parte delllSO 8501 identifica quattro livelli (designati come ccgradi di arrugginimento))) di scorie di laminazione e ruggine Che si trovano normalmente sulle superfici di acciai non rivestiti impiegati in costruzioni o tenuti in magazzino. Essa identifica inoltre determinat gradi di pulitura visiva (designati come ccgradi di preparazionen) doPO la preparazione di superfici dacciaio non rivestite o dalle qual.( rivestimento precedente stato rimosso. Questi livelli di pulitura apprezzabili visivamente si riferiscono ai metodi comuni di pulitura Che vengono impiegati prima della verniciatura. Questa parte delllS0 8501 uno strumento per la valutazione visiva dei gradi di arrugginimento e dei gradi di preparazione. Essa comprende 28 esempi fotografici rappresentativi.

Quattro gradidi arrugginimento sono specificati, A, B, C e D. I gradi di arrugginimento sono definiti con descrizione e documentazione fotografica (vedi capitolo 6).

Superficie dacciaio- ricoperta abbondantemente da scorie di laminazione aderenti ma poca, o niente, ruggine. Superficie dacciaio Che ha incorninciato ad arrugginire e dalla quale le scorie di laminazione hanno incominciato a sfaldarsi. Generalit

Alcuni gradi di preparazione sono specificati, con indicazione delmetodo di preparazione della superficie e del grado di pulitura. La preparazione della superficie tramite sabbiatura designata dalle lettere ((Saa. Prima della sabbiatura, qualsiasi strato spesso di ruggine deve essere rimosso tramite scalpellatura. Bisogna anche rimuovere olio, grasso e impurit visibili. Dopa la sabbiatura, la superficie deve essere ripulita dai residui di polvere e detriti.

Pulitura con utensili manuali o meccanici, St

La preparazione della superficie tramite utensili manuali o meccanici, come raschiatura, spazzolatura con spazzola rnetallica, spazzolatura a macchina e smerigliatura, designata dalle lettere ((St)). Prima di iniziare la pulitura con utensili rnanuali o rneccanici, gli strati spessi di ruggine devono essere rimossi tramite scalpellatura. Bisogna anche rimuovere olio, grasso e impurit visibili. Ventotto fotografie di superfici d'acciaio di paragone sono riprodotte in appendice. Queste fotografie, Che non sono ingrandimenti, sono riproduzioni ottenute con una tecnica speciale Che consiste nell'applicare la foto a colori Sulla facciata posteriore di fogli di plastica. Fogli di carta sono statiinseriti fra i fogli di plastica per proteggerli contro eventual graffiature. Le pagine di plastica non sononumerate e sono disposte nella sequenza mostrata in figura.

Ventiquattro fotografie, da A Sa 2112 a D FI, rappresentano i gradi di preparazione ottenuti tramite sabbiatura secca, utensili manuali o meccanici o tramite fiamma (vedi capitolo 4). Altri metodi, ad esempio sabbiatura umida, producono superfici Che possono differire nell'aspetto, colore ecc., ma le fotografie possono essere usate per dare un'idea del grado di preparazione. Quattordici fotografie, da A Sa 2112 a D Sa 3, mostrano superfici d'acciaio Che sono state sottoposte a sabbiatura con abrasivi contenenti sabbia di quarzo. L'us0 di questi abrasivi in locali Chiusi vietato in molti paesi, a meno Che vengano applicate misure di sicurezza molto severe. Per questa ragione vengono spesso usati abrasivi di tipo (e colore) diverso per la sabbiatura secca. Questi abrasivi possono cambiare I'aspetto della superficie, anche dopo una pulitura accurata. Non vi sono fotografie Che rappresentano A Sa 1, A Sa 2, A St 2 o A St 3 dato Che questi gradi di preparazione non sonoottenibili. Le fotografie esistenti sono sufficientemente rappresentative.

Preparacin de superficies-de acero antes de aplicarles pinturas y productos anlogos - Evaluacin visual de la limpieza superficial Parte 1 : Grados de oxidacin y de preparacin de las superficies de acero sin recubrir y de las superficies de acero despus de eliminar totalmente los recubrimientos anteriores

Introduccin

La eficacia de los recubrimientos protectores depinturay productossimilares aplicados al acero se ve significativamente afectada por el estado de la superficie del acero en el momento previo a ser pintado. Los principales factores conocidos que influyen contra sta eficacia son : a) la presencia de xido y cascarilla de laminacin ;

b) la presencia de contaminantes de la superficie, tales como sales, polvo, aceites y grasas; c) el contorno de la superficie.

Por tal motivo se han confeccionado las Normas Internacionales IS0 8501, IS0 8502 e IS0 8503 para establecer mtodos de evaluar dichos factores, mientras que la IS0 8504 proporciona una orientacin sobre los mtodos de preparacin disponibles para la limpieza de superficies de acero, con indicacin de la aptitud de cada uno de estos mtodos para conseguir determinados niveles de limpieza. Estas normas internacionales no contienen recomendaciones respecto a los sistemas de recubrimiento protector que haya de aplicarse a la superficie del acero, Tampoco contiene recomendaciones en cuanto a la calidad de superficie requerida en diversas situaciones especficas, aun cuandola calidad de la superficie puede repercutir directamente sobre la eleccindelrecubrimiento protector a aplicar y sobre su eficacia, Dichasrecomendaciones se encuentranen otros documentos, tales como normas nacionales y cdigos de prcticas. En esta parte de la IS0 8501 se identifican cuatro niveles (denominados grados.de oxidacin) de la cascarilla de laminaciny de la oxidacin que suele presentarse sobre la superficie de aceros sin recubrir en estructuras y en la de aceros almacenados: Esta parte caracteriza asimismo ciertos grados de limpieza visibles (denominados grados de preparacin) tras la preparacin de superficies de acero no recubiertas, y de superficies de acero de las que se ha eliminado la totalidad de anteriores recubrimientos. Estos niveles de limpieza visible se relacionan con los mtodos corrientes de limpieza de la superficie que suelen emplearse antes de pintar. Esta parte de la IS0 8501 est destinada a ser una-herramienta para la evaluacin visual de los grados de.oxidacin y grados depreparacin. Contiene 28 ejemplos fotogrficos tipicos. NOTAS

Las razones para adoptar son las siguientes : a)

los elementos esenciales de la SIS 05 59 00, incluyendo su formato,

la SIS 05 59 O0 se utiliza ya mundialmente;

b) la creacin de un juego totalmente nuevo de fotografas resultara costosa sin que introdujese forzosamente las correspondientes ventajas;

c) los documentos anteriores y actuales relativos a este sistema ya establecido en grados de el futuro sin necesidad de oxidacin y grados de preparacin podra seguir usndose en enmiendas y sin confusin posible;
d) el tamao A5 (de bolsillo) es de fcil manejo y susceptible de consulta "in situ". Esta parte de la IS0 8501 representa una ligera ampliacin de ediciones anteriores de la

SIS 05 59 O0 en cuanto que es tambin aplicable a superficies que represenfan resduos de pintura adherida y otras materias extraas aparte de la cascarilla de laminacin y el xido.

1 Objeto y campodeaplicacin
Esta parte de la IS0 8501 establece una serie de grados de oxidacin y grados de preparacin de las superficies de acero (vanse los capftulos 3 y 4, respectivamente). Los diversos grados vienen definidos por escrito junto con fotografas que constituyen ejemplos representativos dentro de la tolerancia de cada grado tal como se describe en , el texto. Es aplicable a superficies de acero laminado en caliente que se han preparado para pintar mediante mtodos de limpieza tales como decapado, raspado manual o mecnico y flameado, si bien estos mtodos conducen raramente a resultados comparables. Determina la limpieza de la superficie en funcin de su apariencia visual. En muchos casos sto es suficiente para la finalidad perseguida, pero tratndose de recubrimientos que puedan ser expuestos a ambientes agresivos, como son la inmersin en agua y condiciones de condensacin permanente, deber procederse a ensayos en cuanto a sales solubles y otros contaminantes invisibles sobre una superficie visualmente limpia, utilizando mtodos fsicos y qumicos que constituyen la materia de las diversas partes de la IS0 8502. Las caractersticas de rugosidad de la Superficie deben tambin considerarse con referencia a la IS0 8503.

Se especifican cuatro grados de xido, denominados A, B, C y D, respectivamente. Estos grados vienen definidos por descripciones escritas junto con ejemplos fotogrficos representativos (vase captulo 6).

Superficie de acero recubierta en gran medida por cascarilla de laminacin adherida, pero con poco o nada de xido. Superficie de acero con xido incipiente y de la que ha empezado a exfoliarse la cascarilla de laminacin. Superficie de acero cuya cascarilla de laminacin ha desaparecido por accin del xido, o que puede eliminarse raspando, pero con algunas picaduras visibles a simple vista. Superficie de acero cuya cascarilla de laminacin ha desaparecido por accin del xido y en la que se ven a simple vista numerosas picaduras.

4.3 Generalidades
Se especifican cierto nmero degrados de preparacin, con indicacin del mtodo de preparacin de la superficie y el grado de limpieza. Los grados de preparacinse definen (vanse 4.2, 4.3 y 4.4) mediante descripciones escritas de la apariencia de la superficie tras la operacin de limpieza, junto con ejemplos fotogrficos representativos (vase captulo 6). Cada grado de preparacin se designa por las letras correspondientes "Sa", "St" o "FI", que indican el tipo de mtodo de limpieza utilizado. La cifra subsiguiente, en caso de aparecer, seala en qu grado se halla limpia de cascarilla de laminacin, de xido y de anteriores recubrimientos. Las fotografas se identifican por el grado original de xido, antes de su limpieza y la designacin del grado de preparacin, por ejemplo B Sa 21/2.

La preparacin de la superficie por raspado manual o mecnico, tal como rasqueteado con cepillo de acero o cepillo mecnico, o amolado, se designa por las 1etrasSt. Antes del raspado manual o mecnico debern picarse las posibles capas de xido hasta ser retiradas. Asimismo debern eliminarse el aceite, grasa y suciedad visibles. Despus del raspado manual o mecnico, la superficie deber limpiarse para retirar polvo y partculas sueltas.

Colquese la fotografa correspondiente al lado y en el mismo plano de la superficie del acero que deba evaluarse. Si se trata de grados de xido, tmese como evaluacin el peor grado observado. 2 Tratndose de superficies pintadas anteriormente que hayan sido preparadas para el repintado, slo se usarn, para la evaluacin visual, fotografas con designacionesD o C del grado de xido (por ejemplo : entre la D S a 2 b y la C Sa 21/21 depender de la extensin de las picaduras de xido.

Se adjuntan 28 ejemplos fotogrficos representativos para comparacin con la superficie de acero. Estas fotografas, que no han sido ampliadas, son copias reproducidas por una tcnica especial imprimiendo el color al dorso depelculas de plstico. Para evitar que los ejemplares se rayen, se han intercalado hojas de papel entre la pelcula de plstico. Para facilitar su confeccin, las pelculas de plstico no llevan el nmero de pgina. Para mayor comodidad de utilizacin se han dispuesto las fotografas en el orden que se muestra en la figura.

Cuatro de la fotografas se refieren concretamente a los grados de oxidacin A, B, C y D (vase captulo 3). Veinticuatro de las fotografas, de la A Sa 21/2 y la D FI, se refieren concretamente a los grados de preparacinconseguidos por decapado en seco, raspado manual o mecnico, as como por elflameado (vase captulo 4). Otros mtodos, tales como el decapado con agua, producen superficies que pueden de todos modos utilizarse para dar una indicacin del grado de preparacin. Catorce de las fotografas, de la A Sa 21/2 a la D Sa 3, muestran superficies de acero sometidas a decapado en seco con abrasivos que contienen arena de cuarzo. EI empleo de tales abrasivos en espacios cerrados est prohibido en muchos pases, excepto bajo condiciones estrictamente controladas. Por este motivo, se utilizan a menudo abrasivos de otros tipos (y por tanto de otro color) para el decapado en seco. Dichos abrasivos pueden producir unaspecto distinto de la superficie, incluso despus de una minuciosa limpieza mediante-decapado de la superficie.

No hay fotografas representativas al A Sa 1, A Sa 2, A St 2 y A St 3 debido a que estos grados de preparacin no son alcanzables, y a que las fotografas existentes son suficientemente indicativas,

O comportamento dos revestimentos por pintura e similares aplicados sobre o aco significativamente afectado pelo estado das superfcies imediatamente antes da influenciam essa eficcia aplicaco da tinta. Os principais factores conhecidos que so :
a) a presenqa de ferrugem e de calamina; superficie, tais como, poeiras, leos e

b) a presenca de contaminantes de gorduras;

o perfil da superficie.

As Normas Internacionais IS0 8501, IS0 8502 e IS0 8503,foram elaboradas para fornecerem mtodos para avaliaco destes factores, enquanto que a I S 0 8504 fornece directivas sobre os mtodos de preparaco que podem ser utilizados para a limpeza de superfcies de aco, indicando a capacidade de cada um deles para atingir os niveis de limpeza especificados. Estas Normas Internacionais no contm recomendaes quanto aos sistemas de pintura a aplicar sobre as superfcies de aco. Nocontm tambm, recomendaces quanto a exigncias de qualidade das superficies para situaces especficas, embora a qualidade da superfcie possa ter uma influncia directana escolha do esquema de pintura a ser aplicado e no seu comportamento. Podemlencontrar-se tais recomendaces noutros documentos, como Normas nacionais e cQ&gos de boa prtica. Convir que os utilizadores destas Normas Internacionais se assegurem que as qualidades especificadas

Originalmente, a SIS 05 59 O0 foi elaborada pelo ((Swedish Corrosion Institute)), em cooperaco com a ((American Society for Testing and Materils)) (ASTM) e o ((Steel Structures Painting Council)) (SSPC), dos EUA. Esta mesma parte, estabelece uma relaco entre a limpeza da superfcie e a sua aparncia visual. Em muitos casos esta relaqo suficiente, mas para revestimentos susceptveis de exposiqo a condicesdeambienteparticularmente severas, tais como a imerso em gua e a condensaqo contnua, deve ser considerada a possibilidade de realizaqo de ensaios para determinar a presenca de sais solveis e outros contaminantes invisveis numa superfcie aparentemente limpa vista desarmada, utilizando mtodos fsicos e qumicos que sero objectivo das vrias partes da IS0 8502. As caracteristicas de rugosidade da superfcie devem ser igualmente consideradas por referncia

4:l Generalidades
So especificados vrios graus de preparaco, indicando o mtodo de preparaco da superfcie e o grau de limpeza. Os graus de preparaco so definidos (ver 4.2,4.3 e4.4) pormeiodetextosque descrevem o aspectos da supelfcie aps a operaco de limpeza, juntamente com exemplos fotogrficos representativos (ver artigo 6).
Cada um dos graus de preparaco designado pelas letras ((Sa N, ((Sta ou (( FI respectivamente, que indicamo tipo de mtodo de limpeza utilizado. O nmero seguinte, se o houver, indica o grau de limpeza referente a calamina, a ferrugem e a revestimentos pr-existentes.

As fotografias so designadas pelo grau de enferrujamento original, antes da limpeza, e a designaco do grau de preparaco, por exemplo, B Sa 2712.
NOTAS

1 O termo ((matria estranha)) usado em4.2,4.3 e 4.4, pode incluir sais solveis e m gua e resduos de solda. Colocar a fotografia apropriada junto, e no mesmo plano, da superfcie de aqo a avaliar. Para graus de enferrujamento, registar o padro fotogrfico mais desfavorvel. Para graus de preparaco, registar o padro fotogrfico mais prximo do da superfcie do aco.

Quatro fotografiasilustram especialmente os graus de enferrujamento A, B, C e D (ver artigo 3). Vinte e quatro fotografias, de A Sa 2112 a D FI, dizem respeito especificamente aos graus de preparaco obtidos porprojecco de abrasivo seco, limpeza com ferramentas manuais e mecnicas e limpeza chama (ver artigo 4). Outros mtodos, como a limpeza a jacto hmido(decapagem hmida), produzemsuperfcies que podem diferir em aparncia, cr, etc., mas as fotografias podem ainda ser usadas para indicar o grau de preparaco. Catorze fotografias, de A Sa 2112 a D Sa 3, apresentam superfcies de aco que foram submetidasa limpeza a jacto seco com abrasivos contendo areia de quartzo. A utilizaco deste tipo de material abrasivo em reas fechadas proibida em muitos pases, excepto emcondices estritamente controladas. Por conseguinte, abrasivos de outros tipos (e, portanto, de outras cores) so muitas vezes usados em limpeza por projecco de abrasivo. Estes abrasivos podem produzir u m aspecto diferente de superfcie, mesmo aps uma limpeza muito cuidadosa.

The Technical Committee has reviewed the provisions IS0 of 8 5 0 1 -2*, IS0 8502*, IS0 8504-2' and I S 0 8504-3' to which reference is made in the foreword and various notes to the text and has decided that the drafts are acceptable for use with this standard as they do not constitute provisions of this British Standard. There are currently no related British Standards IS0 to 8 5 0 1 -2, IS0 8502, I S 0 8504-2 and IS0 8504-3 but these IS0 standards are expectedt o be implementedas further Parts of BS 7079. Additional information.
