. Chennai Central to IIT campus Option 1: Institute Bus As the train rolls into the station look for the students of IITM carrying a banner of mitr near the Enquiry Desk. IIT buses are specially arranged to ply at regular intervals to the campus. Main Exit and Side Exit. which links the Adyar and Guindy local areas in South Chennai. Madhya Kailash temple and the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) campus lying opposite to our campus. Gandhi Mandapam (Anna University Stop). Airport and Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) are mentioned below: Railway Stations Chennai has 2 major railway stations – Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore. Page2 . look out for the IIT buses (beige and yellow in colour. The IIT Madras campus is located on the Sardar Patel Road. The notable landmarks around our campus are the Guindy Snake Park adjacent to the IIT main gate. They will directly lead you to the Institute bus. The ways to reach our Institute from the Chennai Central or Egmore Railway Stations. with IIT written on the body) in the private vehicles parking lot of Central Railway Station. If you miss them. After Reaching Chennai..
Option 2: City Bus The direct buses to campus are 5C and 21L. The bus Stop for getting on these buses is opposite to Central Station. The stop to ask for is CLRI / Cancer Institute / Madhya Kailash / IIT. Alternatively, one can first take Bus No.18 to Saidapet (high frequency) and then take (5B, 47, 47A, 47D, 147, 23C) from Saidapet to IIT. Another way is to first take bus (1LSS, 4LSS, 1A, 1C, 1D, 6A) to Adyar Aavin, take a short walk from there to the Adyar Bus Depot, and then take (5B, 47, 47A, 47D, 147, 23C) from Adyar to IIT. We suggest the above mode of transport if you are travelling light. Option 3: Taxi / Auto This is the most convenient mode of transport if you are carrying a lot of luggage. There is a Fast Track pre-paid taxi kiosk next to the exit of 10th platform (Chennai Central Station), from where you can hire a taxi. Further down near the main exit of the Station there is a pre-paid Auto Stand, from where you can hire an Auto. The fares (including the „lot of luggage‟) for the pre-paid Taxi and auto are likely to be about Rs.350/= and Rs.250/= respectively from Chennai Central Station to the IIT Madras hostel(s), which are located 3 kms., inside the campus from the IIT main „IN‟ gate on Sardar Patel Road.
An auto or taxi can be hired on your own too, but the fares demanded may differ and will be negotiable. Option 4: Local Train You can walk up to Park Town (MRTS) Railway Station opposite the Chennai Central Railway Station (a distance of about 300 meters) and board a local EMU train to Kasturba Nagar Station, from where the IIT main „IN‟ gate is about half a kilometer along Sardar Patel Road towards Guindy/Raj Bhavan. Choose this mode if you do not have heavy luggage, and would love to walk a bit (half a kilometer). This is perhaps the cheapest mode with the Park Town to Kasturba Nagar local train fare being under Rs.10/=. Chennai Egmore Option 1: City Bus From the bus stop immediately outside the Egmore station you can take the bus 23C to the IIT. Otherwise, you can take 23E, 23A, 23G to the Adyar Aavin and then … (please see the Option 1 suggestion given earlier) Option 2: Auto / Taxi Pre-paid taxi and auto are available for hire immediately outside the station.
The fares from the Egmore station to IIT are likely to be about Rs.200/= for an auto and Rs.300/= for a taxi respectively. CMBT This is the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT), one of Asia‟s largest bus terminals. Take the bus 23M from there and alight at CLRI / Madhya Kailash bus stop. You will be very close to IIT main „IN‟ gate. You may also take the bus M70 and alight at the Gandhi Road bus stop, which is immediately outside the rear Entrance of IIT. Call Taxi and Auto are the other possible options. You may have to drive a hard bargain if you choose the latter. The fare is likely to be about Rs.250/= by Auto. Airport You can reach IIT from the Chennai airport by hiring a Govt.-approved pre-paid taxi – the billing counter is available within the Arrivals lounge near the baggage conveyor. The charges are likely to be about Rs.400/= to IIT Hostel(s). You may also use a call taxi service to reach IIT. Alternatively, if you want to come by city bus, you can take PP21 to reach IIT, or 21G to reach Gandhi Mandapam, which is on Sardar Patel Road, about half a kilometer from the IIT main „IN‟ gate. There are many buses to Saidapet from the Airport. From Saidapet … (please see the Option 2
Autos have meters that are made not to work . Chennai also has Call-taxis. from 06:00 am to 10:00 pm. Buses are usually crowded. From the IIT Main ‘IN’ Gate to Hostel(s) A shuttle bus service is available about every 15 mins. The rule of thumb is that it takes around 12-13 Rs. especially if you are travelling in a group of 6 to 7 people. especially during the peak hours. Do watch out for your personal belongings when taking public transport and beware of pick-pockets. These turn out to be quite economical. hence strike a bargain on the total fare before hiring one. Travelling in Chennai city Common modes of transport are buses and autos. you can hire one by calling up the taxi operator and a taxi will be sent to pick you up and take you to your destination.“Chennai Central to IIT campus” suggestion given earlier)..
