FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Why Not Hire a 20 Year Old to Run Your Campaign?
August 20, 2013
Earlier today, Keystone Politics blogger, Jon Geeting, released an article denouncing a high level campaign staffer due to age. Twenty-year old Ann Mathews is the Campaign Coordinator for State Rep. Boyle’s Congressional race for PA-13. Instead of applauding Mathews for her hard work that earned her this title, Geeting dismissed her abilities with nothing more than the citation of her age. It is discouraging when serious political minds are negatively labeled purely due to their age. Young people are the future of this commonwealth and should be given the opportunity to prove themselves. Young people provide new perspective and new ideas to ultimately better their communities. If we continue to ignore their perspective, then we cease to move Pennsylvania in a progressive direct “No wonder young people find disillusion with politics; they are laughed off as young, inexperienced, and unqualified, even by their progressive allies,” said Dylan Morpurgo, Pennsylvania College Democrats’ (PACD) Eastern VP, in reaction to the article. PACD works tirelessly to encourage youth activism and ultimately youth leadership in politics. We take these negative stereotypes of youth leaders as a dismissal of the critical role college students and youth play in politics. We would also like to applaud Rep. Boyle’s campaign for acknowledging dedication and hard work when it is demonstrated by members of the community, regardless of age. We wish to see more young staffers with the same level of dedication recognized in the future, and we will work to ensure that Pennsylvania ’s youth are not ignored.
