Almere Stad

“Its street layout, a grid of rectangular

plots, served as a springboard for the
design of the town hall: two five storey-
wings at right angles and one diagonal
wing. The front and rear facades are
contrasting. Those facing the town have
a distinghuised character deriving from
the classical tripartition of basement,
marble-clad middle section, and cornice
with round indentations. The rear facade
is less flat, and displays a great degree of
openness.”

“16 classrooms are not grouped around

a central hall, but situated alongside the
long shaped, street like space, overcovered
by the arch shaped roof. Additional
educational spaces are combined as a
strip in the middle of this ‘street’. This zone
of smaller, more or less enclosed rooms is
interrupted by place like open spaces that
connect the two corridors. On top of this
central zone there is a long balcony, open
for different use.”

Greta Garboplantsoen 1
1993

“Aldo van Eyck was commissioned to

design a health center for the Filmwijk
neighbourhood as part of the BOUW RAI II.
From outside the building looks hermetic,
a fortress even, judging by the phalanx of
‘periscopes’ poking up like battlements
along the North facade. Internally the
design proves to be another illustration of
Van Eyck’s ‘house as a small city’ theme.
The entrances are located at places where
the outer walls sweep inward.”

“Besides 14 formal classrooms, this school

for children with learning and educational
problems has a relatively large number
of additional spaces, including around 6
rooms for remedial teaching, spaces for
expressive movement and one for cookery

the absence of corridors, with all rooms
opening on to an uninterrupted hallway
stretching like an interior main street over
the entire length of the building.”

“Almere, now over 100.000 inhabitants,

has existed less than two decades. In that
short time the city has demonstrated
enormous potential and vitality. It has
shown a commitment to architectural
innovation and experimentation. Almere
will soon reach the critical mass that
will enable it to redefine its ambitions;
ten years from today, the population will
approach that of an average medium-

“De Fantasie is a collection of splendid

houses on the southwest shore of the
Weerwater. De Fantasie has developed into
a beautiful and tranquil neighborhood.
Because of the involvement of the people
in this area it has the feel of a holiday
resort. The intention was to build homes
which were to be demolished after five
years. However, due to the project’s
success, the houses are still standing.”

“De Realiteit lies in a fairly remote

area, which has resulted in a surprising
ambience. The seventeen houses differ in
the materials used and the construction,
but mainly in shape. ‘A bird is flying
underneath our house’ is suspended five
meters above the ground in a steel frame.
The house itself is a small, two-storied
wooden cube. The surface area of the
house is small in proportion to the steel
frame.”

“Muziekwijk is the first quarter in Almere

which has been fully developed by the
city itself. Muziekwijk is known for the
houses in the former exhibition area of
the BOUW RAI in 1998. As there were no
existing buildings, there were virtually no
conditions the new designs had to comply
with. The various architects, including
Herman Hertzberger, Teun Koolhaas,
Peter Loerakker and Mecanoo, created
a wide range of houses. A recent edition
is De Muzen. Atelier Pro designed this

to one of the company’s twelve research

Essentially, these people work on new and
better ways of making energy and coming
up with new things to do with it. The
building is on the north side of the IJ river,

relationship with the IJ-river and with
the historic center of Amsterdam on the
opposite riverbank. The urbanistic plan
proposes an open plan of parallel slabs of
different height and form, and a triangular

urban villas (towers with four dwellings on

It was designed as a commodity exchange
by architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage and
constructed between 1896 and 1903. It
influenced many modernist architects,
in particular functionalists and the
Amsterdam School. It is now used as
a conference venue. The building is
constructed of red brick, with an iron

story halls formerly used as trading floors,
with offices and communal facilities

functional office building. The structure

century to support ‘fallen women’. From
the 1970s the house has offered shelter
and protection to single parents and
children. The staircase is a central feature
of Hubertus House and clearly visible from
the street. The supporting construction is
a concrete construction of columns and

are made of glass. The staircases, terraces

intimate building. Intimacy is important in
this house because of the circumstances
of its occupants.”
