MOTHER MARY SPEAKS TO HER BELOVED PRIESTS
Vigilant Sentinels
“Let yourself be carried in my motherly arms, my little child, and you will see everywhere the marvels of grace and mercy of my Immaculate Heart. Oh, in your days, how beautiful are the feet of those who announce peace, of those who spread the good news of salvation and of the triumph of divine mercy! You must be these announcers of peace. You must be today vigilant sentinels upon the mountains of confidence and hope. Be vigilant sentinels in the dark time of infidelity and apostasy. Thus you will spread about you the fiercely burning light of the Gospel. The whole world awaits your announcement with ardent hope. You are the apostles of this second evangelization. Preach to all peoples that Jesus Christ is the one and only Lord, your Savior and Redeemer, and that He is now about to return to you in the splendor of his glory. Be vigilant sentinels in the hour of the greatest triumph of Satan and of all the evil spirits. Despair is spreading; violence and hatred are reigning supreme in the relationships between individuals and countries; and you are becoming more and more crushed in the bloody winepress of revolutions and wars, of dissensions and fratricidal struggles. Be vigilant sentinels who mark out the way of return to the God of peace and life, of love and joy. And so, you must free yourselves from the yoke of sin in order to live always in grace and in communion with God. By means of you, the light of goodness and love, of brotherhood and peace, of trust and joy will be able to return upon the world. Be vigilant sentinels who announce that the great day of the Lord is now imminent. Make this announcement to all that they may open their hearts to hope, in order for the second Advent to come about in your time and so that all may prepare to receive the heavenly dew of divine mercy, which is now on the point of being poured out upon the entire world. Thus, even in the indescribable sufferings of the time in which you live, your hearts and your souls can be opened to the joy of this announcement and to the expectation of this prodigious event which you invoke with inexpressible groanings: ‘Rerurn, Lord Jesus!’’

PRAYER
O Most Holy Mother, in this hour of the greatest triumph of Satan and his spirits, we pray that as Mary’s children and apostles of the year of faith, we may be vigilant sentinels who mark out the way of return to God and announce the imminence of the return of Jesus, Amen.

IN THIS AGE AND IN THE AGE TO COME
In these days the number of those who minister to the Kingdom of God is aplenty. As the number of such ministers have increased, so have their ministries. Throughout the world many ministries/services are being conducted through T.V. channels in many languages. It may be that the aim of all such ministers is the growth of the kingdom of God. But there are some who do lose the aim that is Jesus Christ. When money and fame become the aims services go astray. Jesus teaches that ministries and ministers are to be discerned from their fruits. It is not the miracles performed nor the show of wealth that makes one pleasing before God (Mt 7:17-20). The one and only way to discern the ministries of someone is to look at the fruits. Whether it is good or bad can be discerned only by discerning the fruits of the Spirit produced by each Gospel minister as an individual. Just as there are those who minister to the word for fame and wealth, there are others as well who perform their services with utHoly Queen

most sincerity, looking solely at the Lord. The corruption and evil of a few have caused disrepute in society even for those who lead a virtuous life. The Lord said, “Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned’’ (Lk 6:37). The word of the Lord sternly warns, you should not judge anybody. If you judge anybody you too will be judged by that same judgement. You should not condemn anybody; if you condemn someone, you too will be condemned. It is a law. Today the spiritual life of many are in a bound state. Through their acts against the word of God, paying least heed to the word, they are in bondage. They lose all relationships. with God. When opportunities arise they grab at them like serpents. They spit the venom in their hearts at others. They are already self-condemned before God. The black hands of Satan have made tight holds on their souls. When I have condemned somebody, God has condemned me already. If God has condemned me, nobody else is capable of removing it. By judging and condemning others, I have become one adjudged and condemned by God. In other words I myself have closed my right to enter the kindgom of heaven; I myself have condemned my soul into hell. I myself have executed the judgement against me. Some time back, while talking with my brothers at home, I happened to talk about a gospel-preacher; one who had parted from the Catholic Church. I had no direct contacts with that person. I said, it was heard that he receives money to his liking. A matter unknown to me, some hearsay. No sooner I made that comment than I felt a heart-breaking pain within me. Unable to bear the pain I went into my room. I understood that the words I spoke had become an indictment before God. I knew that it was the grieving of my Holy Spirit. I fell on my knees and weeping, started praying. I have judged and condemned another person. At that instant itself I have been judged before God. It was after much time that I became free. Let one be anybody before the world - nobody has the authority to judge him; judgement is solely God’s alone. Once when Jesus cast out an evil spirit from a man, the Pharisees said that it was by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, that Jesus cast out the evil spirit. But Jesus said, “But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you’’ (Mt 12:28). What the Lord said thereafter was thus, “Therefore I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come’’ (Mt 12:31-32) . Blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Jesus repeats that it is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. The one sin that will remain unforgiven, in other words, the sin

6

that makes one eligible for eternal punishment, is the sin against the Holy Spirit - Jesus clarifies. That will not be forgiven in this age or in the age to come. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. What is this blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? Each word spoken against a person anointed by God with His Holy Spirit, is a blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. For, when man speaks against those ministers (servants) elected and anointed by God to speak to this world and to perform His acts, such words are viewed by God as blasphemies against the Holy Spirit. It is because of this evil that many lose God’s blessings, become bound up and are lost. Their sins lead not only themselves but their families and future generations too into great destruction. St James says, it (the tongue) “sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell’’ (James 3:6). “And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body”. (James 3:6). The Holy Spirit does not dwell in those who have an evil tongue. They turn out to be such who are quarrelsome, calumnious, gossipy, who destroy many from their relationship with God. The word tells that the tongue is fire of hell. All the evils of hell are on the tongue of man. Those who claim before the world that they are of the Lord and also believe so, but speak evil, must realise that they are slaves of the devil, working for his kingdom. To be redeemed from this evil the heart should be purified. The evil that comes forth from man’s heart comes out through the tongue. Every minister and every ministry is for the kingdom of God. If it is a divine plan, speaking against it is equivalent to speaking against God. They turn out to be destroyers of God’s plans. If you are ignorant, keep mum. Do not judge anybody. That will bring about blessing. May the Lord be merciful! Tom Zacharia, Chief Editor.

For Thou is my Heart
Catherine Mariam Months back, an occassion came for participating in the Holy Mass in the Church at Velankanni. I was standing near the choir. Just before the Holy Mass started, a woman came pulling a wheel-chair that carried a girl. Paralysed below her waist, she was a member of the choir. In that paralysed body, unable to walk without help from others, I could see a heart that was unparalysed. What surprised me most was that she was very happy. From the beginning till the end of the Holy Mass she had a big smile that radiated joy, prompting others with her to sing, and filling those around with joy by her presence. Usually I participate in the Holy Mass with my eyes closed, without watching those around. But on that occassion my eyes observed that girl many times. Her pleasant face that radiated joy, love and contentment led me into some ponderings. Many of us are unable to be happy over the good things God has bestowed upon us. They mourn over the things that they do not have, always complaining and in great

sorrow and pain, disappointed over prayers that go in vain. Holy Scripture teaches us, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phili 4:4,6,7). Almost all of us do pray in our lives, claiming a tradition of many years in life of faith. But how many of us are enabled to actually experience the love of the Lord, to be happy always, to radiate to others the love of Jesus by our presence? Joy, love and peace we experience in our heart. Jesus has said; “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid”(Jn 14:27). Even when the promise of the Lord is there the truth happens to be that many are unable to experience it. I know couples who always appear to be very happy, but when they are left alone they are in great fury and discord. This is the state of affairs among many. They have no peace in themselves and are unable to love others. In the month of June, the Church observes it as the month of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Let us tell Jesus, Lord, make me a new creation, change me as the holder of a new heart! We should be capable of loving others, for which there should be love of God in our hearts. The word of God tells us in Romans 5:5 “God’s love has beeen poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” Haven’t we said several times, ‘I have great love for

Jesus, but am incapable of forgiving certain individuals, I hate them,’ and the like? (1 Jn 4:20,21). The success in spiritual life is not in the number of signs and wonders performed. The more I am enabled to love others and to show mercy and forgiveness, the more I am close to God. The word tells us, “No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us” (I Jn 4:12). If we claim to be spiritual people we have to evaluate our words and deeds every day. As an individual, how much do I love the members of my family? Is my life an exemplary one before others? What is my position in the community in which I am? Through my words and deeds, am I exposing myself as a spiritual man or as a worldly

Continuous gastric upsets and a sort of burning sensation had troubled me for a long period. After eating a meal the problem would persist; also if I eat late, the same was the condition. During the ‘Miracles in Rosary’ service conducted at Thrissur, Brother Tom called those who were sick to the stage and prayed for each one. Through that prayer service I got great deliverence. I used to pray for the same with an intention to give a testimony in the magazine. Thousands of thanks to Jesus and Holy Mary who blessed me by healing me. Teena Mejo, Thrissur, Kerala.

man or as a man of the flesh ? Let us remove all such acts that are against love from our life. We should be capable of removing from our life such things as faithlessness, doubts, fear, despair, sorrow, worries, such sins like telling lies, cheating, treachery, accusation, defamation, slandering and things like these. I have seen people who had spent many years in prayers but afterwards fell into the grip of satan and spread lies and defamation. We shall not become prey to such falls into sin. Let our hearts be redeemed from all evils and be transformed as carriers of the love of God. Dear ones, spirituality is by all means priceless. It is an incessant training. Be watchful not to be such as who promise freedom but at the same time are slaves of corruption, for people are slaves to whatever masters them (2 Pet 2:19). What does it benefit you if your soul is lost to God (in spite of whatever other gains you make), although many costly years had been spent for

God? (Ps 101:7). Let us be changed into persons in whom God actually dwells, loving others heartly and deeply, without limiting spiritual life into some external rituals. “Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law” (Rom 13:10). “For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another” (Gala 5:13,15). Jesus’ heart was pierced because of His love for us sinners. Into that sacred Heart of Jesus, let us offer our own hearts that are filled with sins and lacking in love. Let us pray to the Lord, ‘O , most sweet and sacred Heart of Jesus, transform my heart into the likeness of Thy Heart’ May your heart be ruled by the Lord of peace. Hallelujha.

My name is Kunjumon Joseph. I was staying in Wayanad district and was working in a resort at Kalpetta. One day, without any prior information, I was told that from the next day onwards I did not need to attend the job there. As there was no other source of income for my family I became downhearted. It was in such a pathetic situation that I attended a Spirit in Jesus retreat at Erumali in last September. Only on the third day, I could realise the love of Jesus. I experienced the power of the Holy Spirit coming into me and could pray to Holy Mother more devoutly. Thus all my worries gave way. Later I attended one more Spirit in Jesus retreat at Bombay. After that I prayed for a regular source of income. By the grace of God, I could open a small shop. Crores of thanks to Jesus and Holy Mother. Kunjumon Joseph, Wayanad, Kerala.

MAKE HASTE, O LORD, TO COME
Tom Zacharia “You are indeed my rock and fortress; for your name’s sake lead and guide me. Take me out of the net that is hidden for me, for you are my judge. Into your hands I commit my spirit; you have redeemed, O Lord faithful God (Ps 31:3-5). The people who have the Lord as their rock and fortress are blessed. We come across this confession of David in many verses of the psalms. David saw the Lord as his rock and fortress. He trusted in the Lord and professed Him to be his rock and fortress. On His part the Lord stood like

a gigantic rock and fortress in the life of David. Because he trusted the Lord to be his fortress the Lord stood as a fortress and protected him. Many of the Jewish cities of yore were protected by forts and fortresses. Jerusalem was such a fortified city. David made the Lord his fortress. Therefore the Lord protected him from the hands of his foes. The greatest victory in the spiritual life of a believer is when he recognizes the Lord as God and reposes complete trust in Him. It is when he submits trusting in the Lord blindly without any question that one’s spiritual life becomes a success. Spiritual life is a battlefield. “Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around looking for someone to devour” (1 Pet 5:8). One who is cognizant of the fact that the enemy is there bidding his time and keeping himself in your front or hind, keeps constant vigil and will be alert. Such persons who keep constant vigil make the Lord their rock and fortress. In the initial stages of my spiritual life I was timid and was easily frightened. I feared anything and everything. When I began my spiritual life, problems arose and vexations became heavier. The Holy Spirit was training me on how to depend on the Lord. There is a big rock near my plantation at Sooryanelli. It is almost a mountain. Whenever I am in great distress and pass through agony and tribulations, I, fixing my eyes on the rock will say “Lord you are my rock”. A certain man once made it very difficult for me. I told him “The Lord is my rock. You are striking not against me but

against Jesus the rock. If you can, keep on.” I do not know what he, who was a Hindu, made out from what I uttered. But at the instant I said this he ran away, wailing like a dog in agony and pain. However neither he nor any of his family members made any problem for me in later life. Even today I would say to those who create problems against me that ‘the Lord is my rock; if you can, strike; you are striking not against me, it is against Lord Jesus the rock’. David the psalmist was one who was tormented so much by his enemies and who suffered much. King Saul tried to kill him many a time. But the Lord rescued him always. David says “All nations surrounded me; in the name of the Lord I cut them off.

12

Holy Queen

2013 JULY

They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side; in the name of the Lord I cut them off. They surrounded me like bees; they blazed like a fire of thorns. In the name of the Lord I cut them off. I was pushed hard so that I was falling, but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation” (Ps 18:10-14). Like bees humiliations, torments and shame engulf me today. David had gone through such travails. Blazing like a fire of thorns they blazed against me. They pushed me hard. I could have fallen. But the Lord stood as my strength. He stood alongside me like a rock, fortress and shield. I therefore cut them off. “In the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, until the destroying storms pass by” (Ps 57:1). Oh Lord, I am in the shadow of your wings. Send the storm of anointment against these storms of destruction. Make me a rock, and them chaff. Let the chaff be burned to ashes in your fire, ashes never capable of rising up against us. Lord, I am your servant. I have forsaken all the good things of life as leftovers, always fixing my eyes solely on you, Lord. I seek and pray for justice. Lord, you know that my hands are clean and my heart unblemished. Mete out justice in your just ways. “Wake up! Bestir yourself for my defence, for my cause, my God and my Lord! Vindicate me, O Lord, my God, according to your righteousness, and do not let them rejoice over me. Do not let them say to themselves, Aha, we have our heart’s desire. Do not let them say, we have swallowed you up” (Ps 35:23-25).

PRAYER There are some people who, in order not to pray, use as an excuse the fact that life is so hectic that it prevents them from praying. This cannot be. Prayer does not demand that we interrupt our work, but that we continue working as if it were a prayer. It is not necessary to always be meditating, nor to consiciously experience the sensation that we are talking to God, no matter how nice this would be. What matters is being with him, living in him, in his will. To love with a pure heart, to love everybody, especially to love the poor, is a twenty four - hour prayer. Every day at communion time, I communicate two of my feelings to Jesus. One is gratefulness, because he has helped me to persevere until today. The other is a request: teach me to pray. Mother Theresa Years back my brother and myself were farming in two plots. I was planting lemon grass. My brother was planting potatoes. Farming works in both plots were progressing. Now I got four people for doing the works. They would have to work for ten days to complete the work. On the third day my brother came and took my workers to his plot. Those were days of great mental

people were now working on my land. Within two days the work was over. More surprising was another matter: my brother asked his men to find the hive from where the bees came. There was no bee hive anywhere in the vicinity. I understood that it was the work of the Lord. It was not because I was virtuous and my brother vile that things took such a turn. It was the Lord who called me coming to my help in the time of my distress. He was making it clear to me that he was on my side. David prays “Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me! Take hold of shield and buckler, and rise up to help me! Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers; say to my soul, ‘I am your salvation.’ Let them be put to shame and dishonour who seek after my life. Let them be turned back and confounded who devise evil against me. Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the Lord driving them on. Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the Lord pursuing them. For without cause they hid their net for me; without cause they dug a pit for my life. Let ruin come on them unawares. And let the net that they hid ensnare them; let them fall in it - to their ruin” (Psalms 35:1-8). This prayer of David is my prayer too, Lord! Come down and have your way. Let yourself be the answer to those who try to destroy us. From the depth of my heart, I cry out in agony. Come, come with haste, Lord Jesus, scatter the enemies. Set my foot on solid rock so that I can tread in your path forward. Amen.

agony for me. It was now accentuated. However I suffered in silence. It was noon and I was passing adjacent to the farm land. I found something that astonished me - many labourers were doing farm works in my land. I rushed to the spot. It was learnt from my supervisor that those who were working on my brother’s plot had to stop all work, as a swarm of bees had attacked them. Not once but thrice had they been attacked by bees. Many had got stung. One was hospitalized. My brother came to know about it and he had now directed them all to my farm. In the place of four people who left, fifteen

“My rock and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues the peoples under me” (Ps 144:2) My name is Rajesh. I was born and brought up in Mangalore, Karnataka. Now I work in Mysore. I was a brahmin by birth. Two years back, I experienced the love of Jesus for the first time. Jesus gave me a chance to participate in the Spirit in Jesus retreat conducted in Bangalore in May 2012. Before coming for the retreat, I had lost the sight of one of my eyes. I was a jewellery designer. During my work, accidentally, a steel brush caused a scratch in the eye. The doctor whom I consulted advised that only a costly surgeory can rectify the problem. At that time, I was not in good terms with my family and so couldn’t afford for the same (surgery). Having no source of income, I had to vacate the rented house. Thus, I came for the retreat broken-hearted. Yet, I could attend all the sessions sincerely. I realised the importance of praying rosary for ancestors through the Spirit in Jesus retreat. On all the days I cried before Mother Mary’s statue there asking her what I would do after the retreat. On Friday, while I was doing the same, some sort of a power came and infilled me. Halleluja! Ave Maria! Then I noticed some glass pearls stringed together at the foot of Mother Mary’s statue. I took them and kept. After the retreat, with the help of a person I made a rosary using those pearls in silver chain. Each bead was arranged reciting ‘Hail Mary...’ Later the person who used the same rosary experienced great deliverence. Hearing the news, some others gave me orders to make such rosaries for them. Within one month this work proved a regular source of income for me. I took a house on rent and bought the necessary utensils by the grace of God. I had been a member of the Baj-rang-Dal since my youth. Later I went to Bombay and was active in Bal Thakhrey’s Party. In between, I encountered Jesus through a christian family. After a short period, I lost my eyesight. But the Lord blessed me to be a member of the Spirit in Jesus community through the incident. Hallelujah! Now I share my encounters with Jesus and Mother Mary with others, as also the rosary prayer and the call of Spirit in Jesus. The Lord allowed me to teach the rosary prayer to many Hindus and Muslims using my own handwritten copies of the prayer. Many of them accepted true faith by the grace of God. Glory to the Lord, who touched many nonchristians through the rosary prayer! My mother’s right leg was blackened due to a fault occured during an operation for removing her uterus. The doctor told us that the leg had to be cut off. With the courage I got through the retreat, I approached my mother, with whom I was not in good terms before, smeared her leg with oil blessed by a priest. We did that for eight days, praying the rosary. On the 8th day, her leg got healed completely. Halleluiah ! Ave Maria! Now, after nine months, she is completely normal. Now everyone in my family prays to Jesus with faith. Thank you Lord! By the grace of God, I could also attend the retreat conducted in Bombay. Now I pray rosary and participate in the Holy Mass everyday. The Lord has purified me in many areas. Moreover, the Lord blessed my long cherished desire to be baptised. I got baptised on the last Easter Saturday. I extend my thankful heart to the Lord for each and every blessing. Thank you Mother Mary. Rajesh, Mysore.

Bringing up in Wisdom and in Years
Sijo Mathew, Alakodu In the history of the Catholic Church only one mother was fortunate enough to participate in the function of declaring her own daughter as a saint. It was Azoontha, mother of St. Maria Goretti who was this greatly blessed mother. On the day of declaring Maria Goretti as saint, St.Peter’s Basilica in Rome was filled with thousands of believers from several countries. Azoontha, Maria’s mother, was seated in the front row itself. Pope Pius XII, on that august day, was slowly approaching the altar for making the declaration. Suddenly, to the surprise of all gathered there, the Pope turned and walked to the ground. Reaching Maria Goretti’s mother, the Pope knelt in front of her on that raw ground, held her wrinkled hands in his hands, and kissing them said, ‘Mama, it was you who became saint first; it was from Mama’s saintliness that the flower that was Maria blossomed’ If saintly children are to be born in our homes, parents are to be purified first. Since an individual is formed in the family, the family atomsphere plays the chief role in formulating his saintliness. It is by observing the mutual love, respect and understanding of the parents that Jesus has to be formed in the child’s mind. Parents should bring up their children in attachment to the parish church and the Rosary. Those parents who bring up their children like that might never need to mourn after them - church history teaches. When the boy Jesus was found missing, his parents Joeph and Mary knew that he would be in the temple. As for a missing child in these days and circumstances, how many parents would dare to say that their missing child would be found in the temple? Saintly children are Jesus’ gifts to saintly parents. Those of you, brothers and sisters, who are prosepctive of entering into married life, say the Rosary to get a suitable partner in life. Let your future partner be purified through your Rosary prayers. “A capable wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels” (Pro.31:10). Through saintly couples, let there be saintly children; and through saintly children let us create a sanctified world, holding firmly to the hands of the Lord. Halleujah!

Never able to attend school, she did, however, receive a thorough grounding in Christian virtue from her devout though illiterate mother, Assunta, who, among other things, taught her the catechism of the Catholic Church from memory. When Maria was 9, her family moved to Nettuno near Rome for reasons of employment; the year following, her father Luigi died. Maria thenceforth took even more complete charge of the household, including the smaller children, while her mother went out to labour in the employer’s farm. When 11, Maria made her long-desired First Communion after having attended special spiritual exercises in preparation, which left a profound impression on her. She had always been a model of obedience, of modesty and of purity, and had an innate horror of offending Jesus by any sin. But now she redoubled her efforts to please her Lord and to be helpful to everyone. Going to confession involved a 7-mile walk each way, but Maria counted that as nothing when it concerned fulfilling a spiritual obligation. An evil-minded young farm-hand, whose family was quartered in the same building, thrice attempted to seduce the young Maria, and when she resolutely rejected all his advances, stabbed her innumerable times in a desperate fury. Maria died a resigned and holy death the following day 6 July 1902 having, at her Confessor’s urging, pardoned her assailant and prayed for his conversion. The latter barely escaped being lynched by the townsfolk but had to spend 29 years in prison, during which time he experienced a complete metanoia through a vision he had of the little martyr. Maria’s aged and partly paralysed mother, as well as the assailant himself, had the unique privilege of being present at her canonization on 25 June 1950, an event which attracted such enormous Holy Year crowds, that even St Peter’s Basilica, huge as it is, could not contain them and the ceremony had, for the first time in history, to be held in the open square in front.

Remember the days when you were hard-pressed and crushed in your life? Those were the best -blessed days of your life, because in those days the tempter could not deceive you. In those days you were under the mighty hands of the Lord. Your dependence on those days was on the God for whom nothing was impossible, for you discerned in those days that nobody else could redeem you. Days were there in my life too - days of fire-walk. Well-armed Egyptians were following me behind, and large waters were roaring in front. Sitting on coals of fire I cried aloud. When my faith became frozen and my hope was feared to have stuck up, I called upon the Lord who remained invisible. The waters in front did not move away immediately; the Egyptians behind me were not swept away. But, so as to make me realize that He is still with me, He caused waters to break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert, and the burning sand to become a pool and the thirsty ground springs of water (Isa 35:6,7). Are you today passing through great pains? Are you in a locked up state, unable to run forward or backward or to the sides? Call upon your Lord. “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Even when it is felt that your faith and your hope are lost, still call upon the Lord in sleepless nights and hopeless dawns. He has not forsaken you. Moments might have come when you thought whether the streams of grace that flowed to you were dried up, whether the Lord has become unapproachable. But know this for sure that these hard-pressed days are the most blessed times of your life. Now is the time to take hold of the purification that God bestows freely. You will not get this puri-

Baby Jose tion. But take courage; I have conquered the world ! (Jn 16:33) While passing through great pains one thing was noticed by me. In those times, worldly longings did not subdue me; tendencies for evil left me; my heart was constantly begging before the Lord for his mercy. All my senses remained closed towards sin and the world. In other words, I was being protected from sin. This is the purification bestowed freely. In your persecutions, think about your calling. If you are a person called to the service of the Lord, let your attention, in such crushing days, be in the services of the Lord to be done by you. Through this furnace of suffering the Lord will help you to be faithful to your vocation, your calling. The living Lord will come into your life. And it is here that the blessings promised by him come in search of you. In your persecutions run fast and strong, empowered by faith, without wavering. For, “no one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God” (Lk 9:62). Know thou, therefore, that the times of persecution that you pass through today are fortunate moments. Those are the times of blessings, the days when the Lord visits you personally. Become more strong and courageous. Hallelujha!

Joshi Pandari Two wood-cutters went to the forest to chop down trees and bring back the hewn logs home. Each of them had an axe with him. Both were of equal prowess in this field. Both began their work in earnest the moment they entered the forest. The first one worked on without taking any rest. The other one took intervals .They collected the logs in the evening and the lot hewn by the one who took recesses was found to be the bigger one. The one who took recesses- he had the bigger lot of logs- explained that while he was supposedly taking rest he actually was sharpening his axe with the file.

As in material life this sharpening and chiselling is unavoidable in one’s spiritual life also. Success in spiritual life depends on this sharpening. When problems and temptations do arise how is it possible to face them with blunt weapons? How can a vehicle reach its destination if it is not refueled at intervals? If not trained properly an athlete cannot win a race. “Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable garland, but we an imperishable one” (1 Cor 9: 2425). “I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters ,that our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the wilderness’’ ( 1 Cor 10:15). The apostle is reminding us of being rejected and accursed in spiritual life. It is not just taking part in the race that is the important thing , but winning the race is the important thing. All those who participate do not win the race. The Lord was not pleased with a majority of the Israelites who –liberated from the slavery of Egypt – were being led to the land of Canan. Their deeds were their undoing. They therefore could not reach their destination. ‘All’ of them

were led through the same path. Pillar of cloud was over ‘all’ of them. ‘All’ of them were baptized. ‘All’ passed through the sea and all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink. ‘All’ of them, who were liberated from Egypt , were there in the journey to the promised land. But not all of them could enter the promised land. Most of them were struck down in the wilderness. They were found unfit in the eyes of the Lord. Out of the 2 million who started only two won. The apostle says “ Now these things occurred as examples for us , so that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not become idolaters as some of them did; as it is written, ‘The people sat down to eat and drink , and they rose to play. We must not

confronted with temptations. The apostle is reminding us of one great spiritual truth. The fall of these forefathers and patriarchs is a warning for us. Temptations are sure to be there. But we have to train ourselves to confront such situations. The aftereffects of succumbing to such temptations must clearly be understood. It will help one to strain hard to keep sturdy in spiritual life. “My child, when you come to serve the Lord ,prepare yourself for testing. Set your heart right and be steadfast”( 1 Sirach 2:1-2) We can view the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt as a precursor to the renewal experience of a Christian. the Israelites who crossed the red sea. Baptized in cloud and the sea they were enjoined to Moses. In the same manner we are enjoined to Jesus in baptism. If Israel had the same spiritual food, we also share the body of Jesus. If Moses struck the rock and water gushed out of it, Jesus also suffered in body and shed his blood for us. The aim and end of Christian life is to win the race for eternal life. Spiritual indiscipline and sin are the twin obstacles that stand in our way. If idolatery , fornication and murmuring against the Lord and brethren were the reason for the fall of Israel , it is not different even today. The very same things are the obstacles in our spiritual lives. If only we stay close to the Lord we will be able to withstand the tests in our spiritual progress. Our eyes are to be fixed not on humans but on the Lord. Man is imperfect. We see the Israelites complaining against Moses and the Lord. They doubted the schemes of the Lord. When confronted with problems, they in their foolishness even said that the slavery in Egypt was a better option. That was the reason why they could not reach Canaan, the land where milk and honey flowed. “The one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind; for the

doubter, being double-minded and unstable in every way must not expect to receive anything from the Lord”( James 1:7-8). When problems do arise we have to bear in mind that they are allowed in your life by the Lord for testing you. God is

capable of taking you across the Red Sea. The Red Sea need not frighten you. When you murmur grudgingly against the Lord it must be remembered that you are complaining against God who allowed it in your life so that you overcome it and triumph over it in your life. “ Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12). When we pride ourselves that we have spiritual discipline and maturity we have to make soulsearch and see if the fruits of Christian life are existent in your life. It will help in your spiritual life. “Examine yourself to see whether you are living in the faith. Test yourself. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you? - unless, indeed, you fail to meet the test” (2 Cor 13:5). If we dodge

yourself and be prepared – ever vigilant – to confront and withstand such tests. “My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind , consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:2-4). Let us pray that we may be able to stay close to the Lord and lend our ears to hear the schemes of the Lord. Let not our weaknesses have sway over us. “My thoughts are not your thoughts. Nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts”. The woodcutter understood that lack of sharpness was what affected his work and he immediately made amends by sharpening his axe at intervals.

But the downfall in spiritual life is not that easily discerned. The beginning of the fall may not be noticed at all. Only when the rock-bottom is reached does one understand that he has fallen in spiritual life, and regains his senses. “if you think that you are standing, watch out that you do not fall” (1 Cor 10:12). Therefore we shall tread cautiously in our spiritual life . “For you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness .So then let us not fall asleep as others do , but let us keep awake and be sober” (1 Thesa 5: 5-6). Let us pray to the Holy Spirit to help us progress in our spiritual life. Let us have as our role model the Holy Mother in our spiritual pursuits. Let her intercession help us reach our destination. The Turning Point of My Life
Babitha John
An old violin was kept for auction. Since it was old, not even one pound was told for it. Then the violinist came and played the instrument beautifully. Suddenly the price of the violin began to rise and it was sold for a higher price. What made the difference? The violin was the same. But the touch of the violinist made the difference. If we allow God our Creator to touch our lives, to transform us according to His will, that will be the beginning of precious moments of our life. God created us for a particular purpose and it’s Gods intervention in our life that gives real meaning to our life.

An important turning point in my life was when I received the Holy Spirit wholeheartedly through a Charismatic retreat. From that day onwards, I began to have a personal relationship with Jesus which changed my life entirely. I came to experience the truth that God cares for me and He loves me. My complaint that nobody loves me, I am unwanted - all departed from the moment I received the Holy Spirit and His love. My heart was filled with His love (Rom 5:5). I was able to forgive and to love everybody. When I realized that God has prepared great plans for me (Jer 29:11), I was filled with hope and joy. After my graduation, Holy Spirit led me to attend Spirit in Jesus retreat which was another vital turning point in my life, which later became my vocation, of which I am really grateful to God. God revealed His love and power through His Holy Spirit. I experienced the Mighty Presence of God and anointing of the Holy Spirit. As a result an immense love for God and a great thirst for salvation of souls - both living and deadled me to blaze on fire, that I willingly surrendered my whole life for His kingdom and for salvation of souls. My Holy Spirit has helped me all through my life with a great zeal for the Lord (Rom 12:11). My attitude and mode of prayer changed. My prayer became that all would realize how good and merciful and loving our God is and that all receive salvation through Jesus Christ. Holy Spirit is the hand of God. When I gave my life to the control of the Holy Spirit, my life and personality was completely transformed. My old self was gone and I became a new person (Eph

4:22,23). Through Spirit in Jesus team prayers, I was able to lead a truly holy life step by step. Along with Jesus, it became easier to carry the crosses of my life (Mt 11:28). When we suffer with Jesus we will experience strength and great love from Him. I was strongly convinced by the truth that God will never forsake me (Heb 13:8) and will take care of me and lead me through His way. I was blessed in all my activities where God was there with me. When I am entering into my 20th year of being with Jesus, I thank Lord for His Grace which led me through the right path and for His great mercy and love towards me. Under God’s mighty wings I am blessed and happy.

Holy Spirit transforms life
In modern days, from childhood itself people give more importance on ‘personality development’ classes and camps. If only we could know the real strength within us, the power and presence of the Blessed Trinity within us! “Little

children, you are from God, and have conquered them; for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). How many of us realize that good personality is developed through the working of the Holy Spirit sent to us from our heavenly Father through Jesus Christ! Holy Spirit is our real helper and Advocate and Comforter (John 14:16). The Holy Spirit is the means by which we actually begin to partake of God’s very nature. The fundamental characteristic of God is love (1 John 4:8). “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us” (Rom 5:5). This love is not merely an emotion or a good feeling! The Apostle St.John explained how God’s love would manifest itself in the lives of true Christians. “But whoever obeys His Word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we may be sure that we are in him” (1 John 2:5). If we carefully follow God’s Word in its full intent, then genuine God’s love will manifest itself in our actions and attitudes. The Holy Spirit produces good fruits in us. From a mango tree we get mango. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Gal 5:22-23). A person who is filled with the Holy Spirit will be blessed abundantly with His fruits, which are the essential elements of a good personality. It’s not only about Holy Spirit producing good fruits in us, but He

28

develops a deep fellowship with our spirit. He even intercedes for us in our weakness, according to the will of God (Romans 8:26). “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God”(Rom 8:14). “So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God” (Gal 4:7). To have a deep relation with God our Father and to become His children and hence to be blessed, our spirit need to be in deep fellowship with the Spirit of God dwelling within us (Rom 8:15-17). “But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him… Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?”(1 Cor 6:17-20) The Holy Spirit is working in our lives transforming us, perfecting us. “And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit”( 2 Cor 3:18). We become more like Christ through the working of the Holy Spirit. To imitate Christ we must ask God for help, through His Spirit, so we can bring our thoughts, attitudes, perspectives and actions according to His will. We must allow His Spirit to become our guiding force to lead a true holy life. We must ask ourselves whether we are truly being led by God’s Spirit or are we resisting Him in any other way? God’s Spirit within us, working with our spirit, helps us to recognize and avoid sin and thereby bring true repentance in our hearts (John 16:8). The Holy Spirit gives the person power to change, to stop sinning,

which was powerless to stop before. “For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live” (Romans 8:13). We must choose to enable God’s Spirit to have power over our life, to subdue our old self and to clothe ourselves with the new self. (Eph 4:22-24 ). He renews our hearts and minds through the blood of Jesus. God’s Spirit also helps us to come to a deeper comprehension of His truth. “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come” (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit keeps us in contact with God’s mind. God’s Spirit inspires a deeper understanding of His Word, purpose and will. As 1 Corinthians 2:9-10 tells us: “But as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love Him- these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.” Without God’s Spirit a person cannot understand God’s divinely expressed Word and will, ‘for they are foolishness to him; nor can he understand them, because they are spiritually discerned’ (verse 14). It can easily be shown from examples both in the Old Testament and the New that the Holy Spirit changes those in whom he comes to dwell; he so transforms them that they begin to live a completely new kind of life. Saul was told by the prophet Samuel: The Spirit of the Lord will take possession of you, and you will be turned into a different person (1 Samuel 10:6).

boldness that results from God’s Spirit has no bounds! In the book of ‘The Acts of the Apostles’ we can see the Mighty deeds of the Holy Spirit! This is the Spirit’s role: to bring Christ’s work to fulfillment. Enriched with the Spirit’s gifts, one will have the power to move beyond the limits and to be a bold Christian witness! “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and Look at what happened to Peter! On the evening of the Passover he was so overwhelmed by fear that he cursed and swore and denied that he even knew Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 26:73–74). But after he received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, he raised his voice and boldly proclaimed the Gospel. “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). And in Acts 4 we read of the absolute confidence with which Peter faced the Jewish priests and leaders. While human courage has its limits, the spoke the Word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:31). The Spirit is the means by which God accomplishes His Work in us, as well as through us. The grace of the Spirit provides both the motivation and capability to gladly and successfully do what the Lord calls us to do (Philippians 2:13). Holy Spirit is not to be neglected or ignored; He must be stirred up regularly. “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30). “For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a

spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:6,7). One important characteristic of a wood-fire is that it must be stirred from time to time. Otherwise an ash layer forms, the flame dies down and the heat given out diminishes. However, by stirring the coals until the ash layer is knocked off and oxygen reaches those last sparks in the coals, it is often possible to reignite into a blazing fire. God offers us His Spirit for a purpose. It is the means by which we come to share in God’s love, His power, attitude and His thinking. However, we must be ever mindful to “stir up” that gift which is in us through the laying on of hands. That stirring is accomplished through regularly meditating on God’s Word, doing our prayers, holy rosary, sacraments, worship and team gatherings. It is aided by our fasting and turning to God, humbly and deeply aware of our utter lack of self-sufficiency. It is furthered as we seek to put God’s word into our lives and trying to make changes in all areas of our lives. To be truly alive is to be transformed from within, open to the energy of God’s

love and presence. In accepting the power of the Holy Spirit we can transform our families, communities and nations! It is to be noted that the disciples waited and received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost when they were praying with Mother Mary (Acts 1:14, 2:1-4). The importance of the presence and prayers of Holy Virgin Mary is required in leading a life filled with the Holy Spirit. The book’ Treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin’ by St. Louis de Montfort says: “God the Holy Spirit, who does not produce any divine person, became fruitful through Mary whom he espoused. It was with her, in her and of her that he produced his masterpiece, God-made-man, and that he produces every day until the end of the world the members of the body of this adorable Head. For this reason the more he finds Mary his dear and inseparable spouse in a soul the more powerful and effective he becomes in producing Jesus Christ in that soul and that soul in Jesus Christ.” Dear Mother Mary, help us to be filled and to be led by the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Distant radio-wave pulses spotted Listening to blood cells: Simple test could use sound waves for diagnosing bloodrelated diseases
Published: in Health & Medicine : New
research reveals that when red blood cells are hit with laser light, they produce high frequency sound waves that contain a great deal of information. Similar to the way one can hear the voices of different people and identify who they are, investigators reporting in the July 2 issue of Biophysical Journal, could analyze the sound waves produced by red blood cells and recognize their shape and size. The information may aid in the development of simple tests for blood-related diseases. “We plan to make specialized devices that will allow the detection of individual red blood cells and analyze the photoacoustic signals they produce to rapidly diagnose red blood cell pathologies,” says senior author Dr. Michael Kolios, of Ryerson University, Toronto.

Signals could help astronomers understand universe’s mass It may have taken billions of years for them to get here from deep space, but four recently detected radio signals disappeared only milliseconds after arriving at Earth. The fleeting signals, only the second detection ever of radio bursts emanating from beyond the Milky Way, could help scientists understand the vast unexplored areas that separate galaxies. Picked up by an international team of astronomers at the Parkes Radio Telescope in Australia, the powerful radio pulses emanate from sources 5 billion to nearly 11 billion light years away, the researchers report in the July 5 Science. The nature of these sources remains a mystery, says Benjamin Stapper of the University of Manchester in England, but “clearly they’re very energetic events, probably cataclysmic.”

Using a special photoacoustic microscope that detects sound, the investigators were able to differentiate healthy red blood cells from irregularly shaped red blood cells with high confidence, using a sample size of just 21 cells. Because each measurement takes only fractions of a second, the method could eventually be incorporated into an automated device for rapid characterization of red blood cells from a single drop of blood obtained in the clinic.

Pope Francis: To Meet God, We Must Touch the Wounds of Christ
VATICAN CITY: July 03, 2013 (Zenit.org) : Pope Francis celebrated the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle during his daily morning Mass in the Chapel of Domus Sanctae Marthae this morning. The Holy Father reflected on the need to kiss the wounds of Christ “in our hungry, poor, sick and incarcerated brothers and sisters.” Noting Thomas’ absence when Christ first appeared to the apostles after his

Resurrection, the Pope said that Jesus wanted him to wait a week before appearing to him. “The Lord knows why He does such things,” Pope Francis said.”And He allows the time He believes best for each of us. He gave Thomas a week. Jesus reveals himself with His wounds: His whole body was clean, beautiful and full of light but the wounds were and are still there, and when the Lord comes at the end of the world, we will see His wounds. Before he could believe, Thomas wanted to place his fingers in the wounds. He was stubborn. But that was what the Lord wanted - a stubborn person to make us understand something greater. Thomas saw the Lord and was invited to put his finger into the wounds left by the nails; to put his hand in His side. He did not merely say, ‘It’s true: the Lord is risen’. No! He went further. He said: ‘God’. He was the first of the disciples to confess the divinity of Christ after the Resurrection. And he worshipped Him.” The Holy Father went on to say that the Lord’s intention in making Thomas wait was not only to guide him to believe in the Resurrection, but also to affirm Christ’s Divinity. “In the history of the Church,” the Pope said, “several mistakes have been made on the path towards God. Some have believed that the Living God, the God of Christians can be found by the path of meditation, and indeed that we can reach higher levels through meditation. That is dangerous!”

”How many are lost on that path, never to return? Yes, perhaps they arrive at a knowledge of God, but not of Jesus Christ, Son of God, the second Person of the Trinity. They do not arrive at that. It is the path of the gnostics, isn’t it? They are good, they work, but they have not found the right path. It is very complicated and does not lead to a safe harbour.” ”Others”, the Pope continued, “have thought that to arrive at God we must mortify ourselves, through austerity and the path of penance - penance and fasting alone. These do not arrive at the Living God, Jesus Christ, either. They are the Pelagians, who believe that they can arrive by their own efforts. But Jesus tells us that the path to encountering Him is to find His wounds. We find Jesus’ wounds in carrying out works of mercy, giving to the body - the body - the soul too, but - I stress - the body of your wounded brother, because he is hungry, because he is thirsty, because he is naked, because he is humiliated, because he is enslaved, because he is incarcerated, because he is in hospital. These are the wounds of Jesus today. And Jesus asks us to take a leap of faith, towards Him, but through these His wounds.

God Acts In Our Lives On His Timetable, Not Ours, Pope Stresses
VATICAN CITY: God’s action in our life is according to his own plan rather than ours, Pope Francis taught in his daily homily June 28, and this requires patience on both his part and ours.” The Lord takes his time.

But even he, in this relationship with us, has a lot of patience,” preached the Bishop of Rome at the chapel of the Vatican’s Saint Martha House. “Not only do we have to have patience: He has. He waits for us.” And he waits for us until the end of life. Think of the good thief - right at the end, at the very end, he acknowledged God.” Pope Francis gave Abraham as an example of God’s sometimes lengthy timetable: when he was 99, and his wife 90, God promised him a son. On the other hand, God immediately acts in the life of the leper who in the day’s Gospel asked for healing.” When the Lord intervenes, he does not always do so in the same way,” explained the Roman Pontiff. “There is no ‘set protocol’ of action of God in our life; it does not exist. God acted one way with Abraham, and “in a different way” with the leper, but he always

acts in our lives. There is “always this meeting between us and the Lord,” yet he “always chooses his way to enter into our lives.” “He always enters, he is involved with us, but he does so in his own way and when he thinks it’s best.” We are often “in danger of losing our patience a little,” because of this, as we pray, “But Lord, when?” On the other hand, “when we think of what the Lord has promised us, that it is such a huge thing, we don’t believe it; we are a little sceptical” as Abraham was when promised a son by his 90 year old wife. “Patience until the end,” Pope Francis urged, “because he has patience with us.” “He tells us exactly what he told Abraham: Walk in my presence and be blameless.’”
