COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to expand students worldview through literature, while vastly improving writing, reading, and critical thinking skills. Students will read and respond to a variety of world literature, synthesizing content, connecting relevance, evaluating and reproducing writing styles, and further relating to different genres. Through reading literature from around the world, students will advance in reading skills, writing technique, and making larger connections to the world around them. Students will produce comparative and analytical essays, multi-media presentations, creative projects, and a formal research paper.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
What does it mean to be a fool? What does it mean to be wise? What are the defining elements of the literary quest? How do culture, religion, and geography influence literary works? What is specific or unique to particular eras and cultures? What common archetypes, themes, and messages are found across world literature? What commonalities are shared, despite centuries and continents of separation? How can reading expand our knowledge of the world? of humanity? of ourselves?
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Read & comprehend several pieces of literature Analyze literary elements, devices, and genres Connect common themes of world literature Analyze and understand the cultural influences of literature Contribute fruitfully to class discussion & debates Write well-structured responses, essays, and a research paper Think critically about the cultures of study, and how our world has been influenced by the cultures and literary works alike.
POLICIES
Pre paration /Particip ation
Worth 10% of students grade. Students are expected to be fully prepared with all materials in class, and are not permitted to leave class to get forgotten materials. Students are expected to actively participate in class every day.
GRADING
Ab sence:
For each day absent, the student has a day to make up the missed work. Missed quiz/tests must be made up within a week. Long-term assignments given with advanced notice of a week+ must be handed in on the due date, regardless of absence. It is the students responsibility to seek out missed work, notes, and assignments.
Students & Parents are encouraged to stay up to date on grades through Edline.
L ate W ork:
Homework: 25% deducted for each day late. HW will not be accepted after 3 days. Essays/Projects: 10% deducted for each day late.

Students are expected to be respectful, timely, and appropriate in class. Students must uphold all rules specified in the PJP2HS Handbook.

Students may only use laptops when given permission by Ms. Hanley. Laptops will not be used for notetaking. Laptops must be in class at all times for exercises in writing and research.
