4, 2013 Dear Parents: I am writing to let you know that a 7-year-old student brought a loaded gun to Helen Cordero today. The male student told his teacher that he had a gun in his backpack this morning at the start of class. It is not believed that he ever took the gun out of the backpack and no students were threatened or harmed in any way. Albuquerque Public Schools Police and the student’s parents were notified immediately. The police confiscated the gun, a 40-caliber Glock pistol. The student has been suspended and faces possible long-term suspension or expulsion from school. He also faces possible legal action. We encourage you to listen to your child if they want to talk about the incident. The teachers and staff will also be vigilant and will address the issue. If you have questions about how to talk to your student, you may call a counselor at Helen Cordero. Here at Helen Cordero, the safety and security of students is always of the utmost importance. If you have questions you may call me at 831-6214. Sincerely, Phyllis Muhovich, Principal
