A Hoteliers’ First Leap To a Dream
Summer afternoon, the two most beautiful word in the English Langauge. My anticipation for my usual summer afternoon gotta have twist because this summer I’m
gonna spent it in the hotel for my on-the-job training for my practicum 1 in the hotel and restaurant management course. I had my on-the-job training at Cebu Business Hotel just a walk away from the University of the Visayas Main Campus. We are six practicumers from the University of the Visayas- Dalaguete Campus at the said hotel. We are assigned at the housekeeping department and it was a very enabling and challenging experience. As an on the job trainee working in a hotel is my foremost passion. I like the ambiance in a hotel, the smiling faces around, different personalities and nationalities you can mingle with constantly and every day the hospitality and courtesy of the people around. For the first half of the month I was assigned at the 2 nd floor level and most of the rooms there were dormitory type. There were four to five beds to be made up in every rooms and Cebu Business Hotel was full packed. It’s like we had to clean the same room every day. It was a first because my body had to cope up w/the strenuous and fast paced
activity in the housekeeping but as the time went by, I enjoyed my job in the housekeeping the area. Many people like to check-in in the Cebu Business Hotel because it is located in a accessible area the guest were also satisfied to the service. The second half of the month we had our shifting schedule and I was assigned in the3rd floor area. The rooms there were comprised our suites, matrimonial, de luxe and standard. By this time I had a chance to explore the whole area of the hotel. Every day, I am looking forward for my duty and dreaming that someday I will manage a hotel.
I had observed there’s a lot of money at stake in a hotel business at is always innovating at times. I was also assigned at the mini bar station and my duties was to a beginning & ending inventory of the stocks and answering guest phone call request and tending to purchases of guests in mini bar station. I received lots of tips from the guests during my duty at the 3rd floor area tending mostly to guest requests like delivering hot/ cold water, extra pillows, extra beds and their purchases in the mini bar delivered straight to the rooms. Our resident manager was Mr. DIOYSIUS ORIBE is a very calmly and accommodating man. He is very approachable and made our stay in the hotel as an ojt, a wonderful experience. I had a learn lots of techniques and learn some insights in the hotel management an actual one, aside from the theories at school. This is my first leap in realizing my dream to become a hotelier someday. Now I’m ready to work in the hotel as an employee, to import my knowledge and skills I had learn in my on –the-job training. My heart felt gratitude to our supervisor MS. Rosalinda Diola for being very supportive in teaching and monitoring us and imparting his experiences and l earning’s to us ojt’s. Also the room attendant and the some of the staffs who made us felt welcome in the hotel. To our co-on the job trainees who become our friends;it is a farewell time but the camaraderie will be treasured. MORE POWER!!!! Checked by:

My Learning Experiences as a Practicum
Janet O. Gozon
Every journey in our lives, there is always challenges that we can encounter. Challenges that evaluate us how stronger and wiser we are in handling/ facing those tasks. These also give us learning’s in order to have a self- improvement in our own. On–the-job training is considered as a training ground for all hoteliers who were able to work in an actual situation inside the establishment/hotel. It helps them to improve, enhance, and develop the skills that they don’t have discovered yet. April 2, 2013, we started our on-the-job-training in Cebu Business Hotel besides the UV- Main Campus. We were five on-the- job trainees from the UV-Dalaguete. As we entered the basement area, the guard looked so strict but when we approached her, her attitudes seems tolerable enough. She let us saw our posted scheduled in the bulletin. I confirmed that I was assigned in housekeeping department as a room attendant. Then we entered
inside the hotel. I was astonish how nice, elegant and fantastic the hotel was. The front office area, the lobby, the function rooms and the entire area of the hotel, all was great! I said to myself, Yes! This is it! the hotel that I’ve been dreaming to work for almost a one and half months. Then we looked for our housekeeping supervisor Ms. Rosalina Diola. She oriented us the basic rules and regulations/ policy in the housekeeping area. She scheduled our working hours and let as saw the rooms from 2nd to 4th area in order us to familiarize. I was assigned in the 3rd floor and was scheduled from 1-10 pm. The rooms there were suites, matrimonial, de luxe and standard. I met Ate Vivian, a regular room attendant assigned in the 3rd floor. She taught me some basic techniques on how to clean the rooms fastly. Although we do not allowed to clean the comfort room all we have to do is to assist our R.A. in cleaning such as dusting the furniture’s, sweeping & mopping the floor and fixing
the bed. I’ve met some of the on-job-trainees from others schools. I’ve mingle with them and they become my friends. I’ve also known some of the regular room attendants and the other staffs in the hotel. Days past, I’ve already know the work in the housekeeping area. Each day there were many learning’s and experiences that I’ve en countered such as the proper way of answering the phone whenever a guest would have a request, complains and etc. I also had experience giving request to the guest such as hot and cold water, extra pillows, towels and mattress. I always expected that when I work inside the hotel it was very busy, one time all the rooms were check out and it is expected that there were also guest coming so we have to manage our time discreetly in order to finish our work fast. I appreciate how fast ate Vivian worked, what I did was to follow her. I exert my much effort in order to be alert, attentive, active and fast so that I could assist her. Luckily we finish our work immediately. I’ve realize that time management is very significant in this work because you have to consumed your time wisely in order to accomplish a well done job. In the third week of the month I was assigned in the 4 th floor but same scheduled. The rooms there were standard, de luxe, and mostly business man room so it was easy to clean in the area. Our room attendant is ate Lyn. Whenever we finished our work we went to the linen room to arrange all the linens there. One time I’ve decided to duty on Sunday. I’ve experience to clean from 2nd to 4th floor area because we were only few ojt’s on that day. I’ve noticed that I’ve never felt tired on that day because I was already trained and I focus on the job that I was doing.”If we focus on what we do, the more we can be effective.” Working in the hotel has been a great privilege for me because I was able to experience their work at the same time made me more knowledgeable enough in the course that in the course that I am taking up. It made me improve and develop my skills and abilities that I’ve never had before. It has a great opportunity working in Cebu Business Hotel because I’ve been encountered so many great things that I would be bringing up always. This whole lot learning experience will be treasured and will be apply in the coming
future. I’ve learned to be more responsible in doing my task; you should put hard work, patience, perseverance in order to have a well done job or to accomplish your work faster. I want to say thank you for the manager of the hotel Mr. DIOYSIUS ORIBE for having me the chance to be one of their practicum. To our housekeeping supervisor Ms. Rosalina Diola for being a good trainer to us and to all the regular housekeeping staff who are one way or another influence as to be a good and effective practicum... thank you.. My especial thanks for our practicum in charge Mrs. Josephine Ordiz for being a good instructor and for molding us to be a good practicum. Thank you so much maam… GOD BLESS you all and MORE POWER.!!!
