the country was taken over by north African AQIM forces. When the AQIM forces took control of Libya, they also took possession of the country’s huge arsenals. Soon, weapons were flowing from Libya to other places, including to Turkey. One important exit out of Libya for these weapons was the port of Benghazi. The weapons from here were shipped over to Turkish ports like Iskenderun. The CIA, the Pentagon and the US State Dept were aware of this flow of weapons to Turkey or the Benghazi-Turk clandestine arms pipeline that was supplying weapons to al-Qaeda operatives and foreign fighters in Syria. When Stevens arrived in Benghazi, he saw that the whole place was swarming with al-Qaeda gunmen and warlords and they were the ones controlling the city. He tried to have the weapons looted from the Libyan arsenals collected for verification and tagging but CIA intelligence agents fearful that he was disrupting their strategy for the battles in Syria decided to allow the local gunmen do a number on him. During the street demonstration held to commemorate the 9-11 attacks, a group of heavily armed gunmen stormed the compound where Stevens and some others were staying. Mortars, assault rifles, and RPGs were used and Stevens was found and dragged through the streets before being ‘sent’ to hospital where he was found to be beyond help. The ambassador was sacrificed to protect the Syrian war.
