What?

It deals with the use of English in the fields of Science and Engineering for the present and further studies It does not aim to teach the subject matter of science and Engineering but

to provide students with the language basis to access and understand materials on science and technology to express ideas and concepts in English

Some Characteristics of English for Science and Engineering

Specialized Vocabulary: eg. pavement (civil eng) debugging (information tech) The Use of Abbreviation eg. MIS (information tech) The Use of Passive Sentences eg. A new system has been developed to replace the old one

Functional Shifts:

Many words can serve both as a noun and as

a verb Words ending in -ing have grammatically any of the 3 functions: as a Noun as an Adjective as a Verb

Nomination Tendency (i)

Group A: Nomination of Verb e.g.(GE) General English: We can normally regulate the temperature by using a conditioner. (SE) Scientific English: A normal regulation of temperature can be achieved by the use of a conditioner

Nomination Tendency (ii)

Group B: Nomination of Adjective e.g. (GE)This article is too general, so the reader will not have a full understanding of the theme. (SE) Over-generalization of the article hinders the comprehension of the theme.

Nomination Tendency (iii)

Group C: Nomination of Dependent Clause e.g. (GE) If the machine is run by this method, there will be some loss of power. (SE) The running of the machine by this method entails some loss of power.
