Aim : To show the relationship between the extension of a spring and the force exerted on it.. Hypothesis : The greater the force, the longer the spring stretches. Variables : (i) Manipulated variable : (ii) Responding variable : (iii) Fixed variable : Apparatus and materials : Retort stand, spring balance, load of 100g, 200g, 300, and 500g, ruler. Diagram :

Procedure: 1. The apparatus is set up as shown in the figure. 2. A 100g load is hooked to a spring balance. 3. Using a ruler, measure the extension of the spring in cm. 4. The experiment is repeated by using a load of 200g, 300, and 500g. 5. All the reading were recorded in a table. 6. Using a graph paper, plot a graph to show the relationship between the extension of spring(cm) against the force(N) exerted on the spring and the extension of spring. Observation/result : Mass of Weight (g) Force (N) Extension of spring (cm) 100g 200g 300g 500g

Discussion/analysis : Identify the measuring tool used in this experiment to measure a force. State the function of this measuring tool. Briefly explain why this tool cannot be used to measure a very heavy object. What is the unit of force? What type of force acts on the spring balance when it is measuring the weight of an object? Based on your graph, find the weight of object P if it causes the spring to extend by 1.8 cm. From the graph obtained, what is the relationship between the extension of spring(cm) and the force(N) exerted on it? Explain your answer. Conclusion
