TAKAHASHI

Get creative with leftover fabric scraps to make this handy pincushion. Made from eight assorted scraps for the log cabin pieced front and a felt back, it sews up in no time.

FABRIC
8 assorted print cotton fabric scraps ranging from 114" x 112" (3.2 x 3.8 cm) to 114" x 412" (3.2 x 11.5 cm) for log cabin piecing Felt scrap, at least 5" x 612" (12.5 x 16.5 cm) for log cabin center and backing (shown: blue)

Mini iron Point turner or similar tool (such as a chopstick) Log Cabin Pincushion template on page 2.

About 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm)

6 Place the felt backing piece on top of the

completed log cabin piece, with right sides together, and pin in place. From the log cabin side, sew together along all edges, leaving a 2" (5 cm) opening on one of the edges. Trim all corners and the excess interfacing. the opening. Push out all corners from the inside with a point turner or similar tool. Fill the pincushion with polyester fiberfill, a small amount at a time. Start with the two corners farthest from the opening and fill it all the way to make it firm. Turn in the seam allowances at the opening and then handstitch the opening closed with a slipstitch.

NOTES When preparing to print templates, make sure that you are printing it at 100% and that there is no scaling. Check the settings for page scaling (should be None) and check the preview to make sure that you will be printing at full size. Make sure that the box labeled Auto-Rotate and Center is unchecked (instructions apply specifically to Adobe Reader; if using another PDF reader, check for similar settings). To ensure that the template has printed at the correct scale, check the size of the TEST SQUARE. The Test Square should be 1" 1" (2.5 2.5 cm).

necessary lines on the nonadhesive side of the lightweight interfacing (use a lightbox or bright window to facilitate tracing the template onto the interfacing).
