Unit aim: To provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed to understand, design, query and implement database systems. Unit abstract: An understanding of database tools and technologies is key to many of todays industries. Database systems are predominant in the world of IT, and continue to demand more complex data structures and interface, as applications get increasingly sophisticated. Databases provide the infrastructure to many organisations, and they offer support to key business applications and information systems. The most common database model used commercially is the relational one. The aim of this unit is to provide a knowledge and understanding of database systems including design principles, practical implementation and development skills for both the system designer and software engineer. The importance of structured query languages should be stressed, in terms of how they can be used to manipulate data and how they are used for a variety of tasks including querying and report writing. On completion of this unit the learner should be able to understand, design, query and implement a database(s). Learners will also have a theoretical insight into the requirement for designing a database that meets a given user or system requirement and that is functional, user friendly and robust.

Learning outcomes and assessment criteria: In order to pass this unit, the assignment that you present for assessment needs to demonstrate that you can meet all the learning outcomes listed below. The assessment criterion is a sequence of steps that you will follow to help you achieve the unit assignment. Learning Outcomes ( LO) LO1 Understand data models and database technologies Assessment Criteria ( AC) 1.1 critically compare different data models and schemas 1.2 critically discuss the benefits and limitations of different database technologies 1.3 analyse different approaches to database design

LO2 Be able to design and implement relational database systems

2.1 design a relational database system to meet a given requirement 2.2 build a relational database system based on a prepared design 2.3 apply a range of database tools and techniques to enhance the user interface

LO3 Be able to use manipulation and querying tools

3.1 explain the benefits of using manipulation and query tools in a relational database system 3.2 implement a query language into the relational database system 3.3 critically evaluate how meaningful data has been extracted through the use of query tools

LO4 Be able to test and document relational database systems

4.1 critically review and test a relational database system 4.2 create documentation to support the implementation and testing of a relational database system 4.3 create user documentation for a developed relational database system 4.4 explain how verification and validation has been addressed 4.5 explain how control mechanisms have been used.

Before you get started please read the following information very carefully.
Assignment Format/Style Produce a report (in word or Pdf) that addresses all the tasks in the assignment brief. You are encouraged to use diagrams or tables, screen snips and videos to illustrate and reinforce your findings. Where Videos are used as evidence, please burn them on a CD/DVD and hand it in with the report. Any references to academic theory should be correctly cited and referenced in a bibliography at the end of the report. Fully completed assignment cover page Title page Table of contents Introduction Main body of the report clearly identifying the separate outcomes and assessment criteria Conclusion and recommendations References and bibliography Appendices only if relevant and necessary Assignment Content The assignment brief includes headings relevant to the unit outcomes, read and follow the tasks listed under each heading and this will make certain that you cover all the outcomes and assessment criteria to achieve the unit. Assessment and Grading Read the assessment grading criteria before attempting the assignment tasks, as it contains important information about how you should approach your assignment and how grading is applied in order for you to achieve a pass, merit or distinction. Assignment Submission All assignments must be submitted by the agreed date, via MOODLE. Assignments submitted late, but with permission, will be marked as a pass only. Assignments submitted late, without permission, will not be marked until the end of the year, or the next time the unit is scheduled. Please ensure that your assignment is attached to the assignment submission receipt and that you read and sign the statement confirming authenticity. Check that all relevant fields are completed fully before submission. Assignment Feedback Once the assessor has marked your assignment, you will receive written feedback, either confirming that you have met the required standard and grade awarded, or that you have not yet met the standard and what you need to do to make the necessary improvements. Please note that achieved and confirmation of grades is provisional until signed off by the Internal Verifier. Student Guide to Writing an Assignment This is an assignment guide to help support you while completing your BTEC Assignments. It includes: Assignment writing guidance Referencing guidance Recommended Reading A reading list will be given to you at the first session unit session. You should also read a good quality newspaper and/or use relevant internet sites regularly and identify key influences and recent and relevant research with regard to your subject area. You should read topical case studies and read about national campaigns and government initiatives in your area of interest.

Scenario Write a Word or PDF report based on the following tasks. Provide evidence of the completed tasks through screen snips and video recording where applicable. Burn video recording on CD or DVD and hand it in with the report.

Please use the headings shown below when writing up your report
