FLOW & SCRIPT

Everyone enters the room

Facilitator Script: Welcome to Tricky, Awkward Questions at the Deli! A game where contestants answer those tricky/awkward questions we all get at the deli and the audience votes on the responses! FeelGood believes as a movement that people are, deep down, just plain good and generous. And while sometimes their questions can come across otherwiseas tricky, awkward, or even difficult to answer those moments are an opportunity to bring that goodness out and share the love.

Im going to form two teams of 3 people each. So I need 6 volunteers to

CHAPTER MEETING LABS

play the game! Who wants to play? ( 3 go on the right side of the room, 3 go on the left side of the room)
Volunteers are welcomed onto the stage, and split up into 2 teams (2 min)

Facilitator Script: I also need 3 more volunteers to act as deli customers. Please come up to the stage
Have them come up to the stage to get their question cards and then return to their seats until their question number is called. When called, they come up to the deli and ask their question to the contestant. After the contestant responds, they sit back down with their team.

Facilitator Script:
Rules are read: (5 min)

Heres how the game will work: There are 2 teams and 6 questions. For each question, each team will choose 1 representative to approach the deli stand. The question will be read by one of the deli customers and the contestant to ring the bell first gets to answer the question. For each question, different contestants should come up from each team. The contestant who rings the bell first then has 45 seconds to think through and respond to the question and will be cut off by the buzzer at that time. The judges (each audience group with the cards) will then have 15 seconds to vote on the response - either awkward(worth 1 point), good (worth 2 points), or amazing (worth 3 points in round 1 and 6 points in round 2). By the time the buzzer goes off after 15 seconds, all votes must be locked in. Points will be awarded based on the majority rating Then the recommended response will be read aloud. There are many things that can impact how you respond to questions at the deli, but we want to share some key language, phrases and words that are aligned with the FeelGood movement. The team with the most points at the end of the 2 rounds wins! Are we ready to begin? Any questions? Lets begin! I need one participant from each team to approach the deli table. I want to invite audience member with question #1 to come up to the deli stand and read their question. The contestant that rings the bell first after the question is asked gets to answer this question, the other contestant can sit back down with their team.

CHAPTER MEETING LABS

Q1 read aloud by pretend customer, bell rang, contestant has 45 seconds to respond

Q1: I would love a sandwich, but do I have to donate?

Facilitator Script: o Now well have our judges vote o The majority vote is _____ (award points)
Have someone keep track of points earned in every round.
o

And here is the recommended response: Well, if you do donate, 100% of your donation gets invested in CHOICE/THP and they invest directly in our global brothers and sisters to stop the cycle of poverty by empowering them to live lives of selfreliance. Thats how it works - we give you a sandwich, you invest in the end of hunger. And if you cant manage a donation today, dont worry - well be here again next Tuesday! (1 min)

Lets go to question #2. I need one participant from each team to approach the deli table. I want to invite audience member with question #2 to come up to the deli stand and read their question. Whoever rings the bell first after the question is asked gets to answer this question, the other contestant can sit back down with their team. Q2 read aloud by pretend customer, bell rang, contestant has 45 seconds to respond

Q2: Why dont you give money to starving people in America? Why
don't you work to help people in your community?

Facilitator Script: o Now well have our judges vote o The majority vote is _____ (award points) o And here is the recommended response: FeelGood is committed to working with those who are experiencing the most extreme hunger and poverty in the world - meaning people who live on less than $1.25 per day. This is the highest leverage place to be working because of the massive impact it can have globally. We work domestically by engaging college students in the US to become passionate and informed leaders and global citizens; people who are changing the conversation about hunger everywhere. (1 min)
Lets go to question #3. I need one participant from each team to approach the deli table. I want to invite audience member with question #3 to come up to the deli stand and read their question. Whoever rings the bell first after the question is asked gets to answer this question, the other contestant can sit back down with their team.

CHAPTER MEETING LABS

Q3 read aloud by pretend customer, bell rang, contestant has 45 seconds to respond Q3: So, how do the grilled cheeses get to the people in the developing
countries? Is that how it works? How does it save them from dying?

Facilitator Script: o Now well have our judges vote o The majority vote is _____ (award points) o And here is the recommended response: We make grilled cheeses here on campus as a way to mobilize financial investment and raise awareness about why hunger persists and what we can do to end it for good. In fact, we dont actually send food to developing countries at all. We invest in those communities by supporting partnership, not charity, to invest in long-term sustainable change, not giving handouts. (1 min)
Lets go to question #4. I need one participant from each team to approach the deli table. I want to invite audience member with question #4 to come up to the deli stand and read their question. Whoever rings the bell first after the question is asked gets to answer this question, the other contestant can sit back down with their team. Q4 read aloud by pretend customer, bell rang, contestant has 45 seconds to respond

Q4: how are you going to end world hunger? Thats impossible!

Facilitator Script: o Now well have our judges vote o The majority vote is _____ (award points) o And here is the recommended response: We can change the current situation by investing in organizations like THP & CHOICE that focus on grassroots mobilization and developing self-reliant, resilient communities. Hunger is a huge issue, but individual actions add up to huge community, country and global actions that create lasting change (1 min) Lets go to question #5. I need one participant from each team to approach the deli table. I want to invite audience member with question #6 to come up to the deli stand and read their question. Whoever rings the bell first after the question is asked gets to answer this question, the other contestant can sit back down with their team.
Q5 read aloud by pretend customer, bell rang, contestant has 45 seconds to respond Q5: I know of another organization that works to end hunger, can you give
money from your deli to them?

Facilitator Script: o Now well have our judges vote o The majority vote is _____ (award points)

CHAPTER MEETING LABS

o

And here is the recommended response: Currently, FeelGood has only done the due diligence to certify two partners that we can ensure have a proven track record of mobilizing self-reliance around the world. Because we want our impact to be significant to each organization, we are not ready to certify additional organizations yet. In the future we will support more organizations as our fundraising capacity goes up. So, can we keep the name of the organization you are proposing? Wed love to look them up! (1 min)

Game closing: reveal winners and award prizes if any are available.

Facilitator Script: AND THATS THE END OF OUR GAME! THE WINNER IS... THANK YOU TO OUR LOVELY CONTESTANTS, OUR DELI CUSTOMERS, OUR JUDGES and everyone else who helped make this game happen! All student participants can take a seat back in the audience and leave your deli uniforms on your seat.
Takeaway points to end the game/reflection (7-10 minutes)

Facilitator Script: So, theres one more piece left. Lets take some time to reflect on what weve learned from this game... o interactive, ask the audience: What did you take away from this game? What did you learn about what comprises a good answer? When you rated something good, what did you like about it? Why did you rate something as awkward? What was missing? o The most effective response is one where they ask another question. Youre just planting a seed. You dont need to get everything across to them at once. its complicated, so just take off the first layer and invite more questions.

Make sure to pick up a handout on this session on your way out! (should be by the door)

THANK YOU EVERYONE!
