I truly believe that my writing should be universally understood even though some of the cultural context and even some of the language and other nuances might be lost to those who are not from my country of origin. At the same time I am conscious of writing out of a sense of place. In a sense that place determines who my primary readers are: the people of Jamaica and the wider Caribbean the challenge is to particularize the universal: to speak of large events through small mouths.
